Risk factors for mortality after bereavement: a logistic regression analysis.

A national sample of elderly widowed people was followed up for six years. Excess mortality was found for men aged 75 years and over in the first six months of bereavement compared with men of the same age in the general population. Logistic regression analysis, controlling for age and sex together, demonstrated that the best independent predictors of mortality among the elderly widowed were: interviewer assessment of low happiness level; interviewer assessed and self-reported problems with nerves and depression; and lack of telephone contacts. The general practitioner is well placed to assess

Cognitive-behavioural therapy and short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy versus brief psychosocial intervention in adolescents with unipolar major depression (IMPACT): a multicentre, pragmatic, observer-blind, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although there are effective psychological treatments for unipolar major depression in adolescents, whether or not one or more of the available therapies maintain reduced depressive symptoms 1 year after the end of treatment is not known. This is a non-trivial issue because maintaining lowered depressive symptoms below a clinical threshold level reduces the risk for diagnostic relapse into the adult years. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether or not either of two specialist psychological treatments, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) or short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy (STPP),

Validity of the MMPI-3 Antagonism Scale in assessing psychopathic personality traits: Findings from a community sample.

The present study examined the construct and incremental validity of the new Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) Antagonism (ANT) scale in the assessment of psychopathic personality traits given the centrality of the antagonism domain to this personality disorder construct. A sample of 231 individuals who had been recruited for subclinical psychopathy and externalizing traits from the general community was used. These participants had been administered a range of clinical interviews and self-report measures of psychopathy from which a four-factor model of psychopathy (affect

Transcranial Photobiomodulation Variables Assessment Battery: Development and Validation.

Transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) response variability is partly driven by biophysical characteristics such as skin tone and hair properties that attenuate photon penetration, and by lifestyle factors including sleep quality, alcohol use, and nicotine consumption that disrupt the mitochondrial and vascular pathways on which tPBM acts. To date, no validated self-report tool exists to capture these moderators systematically. To address this gap, the tPBM Variables Assessment Battery was developed and psychometrically evaluated. It integrates adapted versions of established measures (Brief P

NuViva: Development of postpartum nutrition and exercise program implementing the FIGO pregnancy passport to reduce cardiometabolic risk.

Pregnancy provides a unique opportunity to identify women at increased risk of future chronic disease, as adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs) such as hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, gestational diabetes mellitus, preterm birth, placental complications, and fetal growth restriction are associated with later cardiometabolic morbidity. However, postpartum care remains fragmented and limited, representing a missed opportunity for preventive intervention. Currently in pilot phase, NuViva is a novel, multidisciplinary, community-based postpartum program, providing nutrition, physical exercise, an

Cognitive rehabilitation after acquired brain injury: knowledge, attitudes, and practices of healthcare professionals in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: Acquired brain injuries (ABI) cause cognitive impairments that significantly affect occupational performance and quality of life. Despite their prevalence in the Middle East, ABIs are underexplored in Lebanon, particularly in terms of cognitive assessment and rehabilitation. This study provides the first insights from Lebanon and the Arab region into Lebanese healthcare professionals' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) regarding cognitive impairments following ABI. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Lebanon between January and April 2025 using a self-administ

Stuttering and neurodiversity: A question of ableism or anti-ableism? One central premise: The person who stutters.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this position statement is to lay the foundation for an open-minded discourse by embracing neurodiversity in assessment and treatment of the person who stutters and to bring attention to the central premise: the person who stutters. METHOD: A reflection on recent publications and conference presentations that discuss an unnuanced and narrow-minded ableist versus anti-ableist approach to the assessment and treatment of people who stutter. Many of those are not data-bound and lead to confusion and a perception of professional failure, certainly among junior speech-langua

Multi-method assessment of suicidal thoughts and behaviors among patients in treatment for OCD and related disorders.

Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) are associated with increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs), yet research characterizing suicidality in OCRDs remains limited. A major challenge in assessing STBs is the reliance on explicit self-report. This study utilized multi-method assessment to examine changes in both implicit and explicit STBs in 31 adults receiving partial/residential treatment for OCRDs. Assessments were administered at admission and weekly during treatment. Approximately three-quarters of participants reported lifetime suicidal thoughts, with 16 % re

Deep Diving Into the Cardiovascular Health Paradox: A Journey Towards Personalized Prevention.

OBJECTIVES: The Life's Simple 7 score (LS7) promotes cardiovascular health (CVH). Despite this, some with optimal LS7 develop cardiovascular disease (CVD), while others with poor CVH do not, termed the "CVH paradox." This paper explores pathways explaining this paradox. METHODS: We examined methodological aspects: 1) misclassification bias in self-reported lifestyle factors (smoking, physical activity, diet); 2) cumulative exposure to risk factors over a lifetime, impacting the CVH paradox. Punctual risk factor assessments are suboptimal for predicting outcomes. We proposed personalized preve

Assessment and Treatment of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the literature pertaining to the assessment and treatment of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) ten years following its introduction to DSM-5. RECENT FINDINGS: Several structured clinical interviews for assessing ARFID have been developed, each with its own strengths and limitations. There is no clear leading self-report measure for tracking treatment progress and outcome in ARFID. Medical assessment is comprised of examining anthropometrics, vitamin deficiencies, and other comorbidities. To date, several studies have reported on cognitive behaviora

[Chronic eye pain].

Numerous conditions in the field of ophthalmology are associated with pain in or around the eye. Chronic pain associated with the eye is a common finding in the daily routine of ophthalmologists and can be associated with primary ocular or extraocular diseases as well as with other conditions. Appropriate diagnostic assessment and management of people with chronic pain requires an understanding of the condition based on the biopsychosocial model in which the interactions of biological/somatic, psychological and social factors are determining pain and suffering. Beyond the ophthalmological find

Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance lymphangiography in pediatric patients with central lymphatic system disorders.

Central conducting lymphatics (CCLs) disorders represent a broad spectrum of clinical entities ranging from self-limiting traumatic leaks treated by conservative strategies, to complex lymphatic circulation abnormalities that are progressive and unresponsive to currently available treatments. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance lymphangiography (DCMRL) performed by intranodal injection of gadolinium-based contrast material is a recently developed technique which allows a minimally invasive evaluation of the CCL abnormalities providing a dynamic assessment of lymph flow and its pathway

[Intrapartum Foetal Heart Rate Monitoring and Rate of Caesarean Section: A National Survey].

INTRODUCTION: The rate of Caesarean section has dramatically increased in recent decades. Foetal scalp blood sampling and computer software analysing foetal heart rate detection should help in the decision-making for or against Caesarean section. The main aim of this study was to examine how these 2 factors influence the Caesarean section rate. METHODS: A national survey of all maternity units in Germany was undertaken using a self-reported questionnaire via crowd sourcing. All variables were collected as categorised data sets. Using these data sets, correlation coefficients were calculated.

[Acne inversa/hidradenitis suppurativa: A challenge for the future].

Acne inversa (AI)/hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic recurrent inflammatory dermatosis with signs of a systemic disease. AI is characterized by typical skin alterations in body areas bearing apocrine glands. The care of the AI patients in Germany is still inadequate. This situation might be significantly improved through the following efforts: (i) shortening of the time between the disease onset and the diagnosis/start of therapy; (ii) the in-depth investigation of AI pathogenesis with the aim of identifying innovative therapeutic targets and blood biomarkers; (iii) establishing a method fo
