Risk factors for obstructive sleep apnoea in obese children: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is prevalent among children with obesity and is associated with long-term morbidity. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of risk factors for OSA among children (0-18) who are overweight/obese. Risk factors reviewed included overall adiposity, regional fat distribution, adenotonsillar hypertrophy, sex, ethnicity, and airway neuromuscular tone. PubMed and Embase were searched in July 2025. Random-effects models were applied. RESULTS: Forty-seven studies were included. Children with OSA had higher BMI z-scores (mean difference (

Hyperechogenicity of the pyloroduodenal junction in small dogs: Population prevalence in 175 dogs and histological correlation in 14 specimens.

At the pyloroduodenal junction (PDJ), an increase in wall echogenicity is frequently observed. A prospective study was performed to assess the PDJ sonographically in 175 adults and small dogs (>1 year old, <11.4 kg (25 lb)) over 12 months to evaluate the prevalence of this finding. Additionally, changes in echogenicity were correlated with histology in 14 postmortem specimens. A scoring system of echogenicity change centered on the mucosa and submucosa of the PDJ was implemented; 0: no change, 1: mild, 2: moderate to marked. Other included parameters were age, sex, breed, gastric distention, g

The role of inter-regional flows in the spread of epidemics in a city of regional influence with a tropical climate.

The aim of this research was to investigate the origin of imported cases of dengue in the city of Araraquara, Brazil and to describe the disease's main epidemiological characteristics. The study encompassed all confirmed cases of dengue recorded in the Information System for Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) [Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação] from 1998 to 2013. Cases whose origin of infection was likely located outside Araraquara were considered imported. The epidemiological study entailed a descriptive analysis of the data, regarding the distribution of cases by sex, age, and classif

Y chromosome haplogroups in autistic subjects.

The male to female ratio in autism is 4:1 in the global autistic population, but increases to 23:1 in autistic subjects without physical or brain abnormalities.(1) Despite this well-recognised gender difference, male predisposition to autistic disorder remains unexplained and the role of sex chromosomes is still debated. Numerical and structural abnormalities of the sex chromosomes are among the most frequently reported chromosomal disorders associated with autism. However, genome scans have failed to detect linkage on the X chromosome(2,3,4) and this approach cannot study the non-recombining

Underuse of invasive procedures among Medicaid patients with acute myocardial infarction.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine whether underuse of cardiac procedures among Medicaid patients with acute myocardial infarction is explained by or is independent of fundamental differences in age, race, or sex distribution; income, coexistent illness; or location of care. METHODS: Administrative data from 226 hospitals in New York were examined for 11,579 individuals hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction. Use of various cardiac procedures was compared among Medicaid patients and patients with other forms of insurance. RESULTS: Medicaid pa

PCR analysis of Y-chromosome sequences in a 45,X male patient and a review of the literature.

The 45,X karyotype is usually associated with Turner syndrome, while male phenotype is exceptional. The authors report a 45,X male patient with normal external genitalia and sex behavior, but who was azoospermic. He had a normally developed musculature and pilose distribution, testicular volume of 15 mL and no gynecomastia but clinical stigmata of Turner syndrome (short stature, short neck and 4th metacarpal bones) and azoospermia. Hormonal plasma levels of testosterone, estradiol, prolactin, and gonadotrophins were within the normal range as was the response of luteinizing hormone (LH) and fo

Involvement of chromosome losses in the progression and metastasis formation of a human malignant melanoma.

To characterize the possible cytogenetic link between a primary tumor and its metastasis, interphase cytogenetic analysis was performed on tumor cells and cutaneous metastasis from a male patient with malignant melanoma by using fluorescence in situ hybridization. The numbers of distinct hybridization domains specific for ten different pericentromeric sequences were used as indicators of copy numbers of these chromosomes. In the primary tumor, the majority of cells had two copies of these chromosomes, but significant numbers of nuclei also were present with one and three copies. In addition, i

Excess mortality in giant cell arteritis.

A 13-year departmental sample of 34 patients with definite (biopsy-verified) giant cell arteritis (GCA) was reviewed. The mortality of this material was compared to sex-, age- and time-specific death rates in the Danish population. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was 1.8 (95% confidence limits, 1.1-2.8). During the same period 146 patients with probable (not biopsied, but clinically diagnosed in the department) GCA and 85 cases of possible (diagnosed and treated before admission) GCA had been admitted to the department. Those two groups did not differ from the biopsy-verified group with

Temporal distribution of recorded intensive care unit deaths across the 24-hour cycle: a 15-year retrospective hospital-based study.

BACKGROUND: Whether recorded deaths in intensive care units (ICUs) follow a uniform temporal distribution throughout the 24-hour cycle remains uncertain. Previous studies have primarily compared broad day-night periods, potentially overlooking finer temporal patterns. We investigated the temporal distribution of recorded ICU deaths using both predefined time intervals and continuous-time modeling. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the temporal distribution of recorded intensive care unit deaths across the 24-hour cycle using continuous-time and interval-based analyses. METHODS: This retrospective o

Prevalences of Known and Presumed Inherited Eye Diseases in Pugs in Germany.

The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the prevalence and distribution of presumed inherited eye diseases in pugs in Germany and to evaluate potential risk factors for selected diseases. Therefore, ophthalmic findings from 294 pugs provided by the German panel of the European Eye Scheme programme were analyzed retrospectively. Associations between diseases and age and sex were assessed using multivariable linear probability models and correlation analyses and prevalences with 95% confidence intervals were reported. Entropion was the most frequent diagnosis (72.4%), followed by pig

New insights into the chromosomes of stoneflies: I. Karyotype, C-banding and localization of ribosomal and telomeric DNA markers in Skwalacompacta (McLachlan, 1872) (Polyneoptera, Plecoptera, Perlodidae) from Siberia.

This study provides data on chromosome number (2n♂♀=26), sex determination mechanism (XY♂/XX♀), C-banding pattern, distribution of clusters of telomeric TTAGG repeats and 18S ribosomal DNA in the karyotype of the stonefly Skwalacompacta (McLachlan, 1872). For the first time in the history of stoneflies cytogenetics, we provide photos of the chromosomes of the Plecoptera insects. The karyotype of males and females of S.compacta consists of 12 pairs of autosomes. Three pairs of large autosomes and four pairs of medium-sized autosomes are subacrocentric. The remaining pairs of autosomes are small

Clinical profile and comorbidity of traumatic brain injury among younger and older men and women: a brief research notes.

OBJECTIVE: Comorbid disorders influence the course and outcomes of rehabilitation following traumatic brain injury (TBI), yet sex- and age-related disparities in the frequency distribution of these disorders remain poorly understood. We aimed to describe comorbid disorders by the International Classification of Diseases in patients with TBI undergoing inpatient rehabilitation in Ontario, Canada over a 3-year period, by sex and age, and discuss their potential impact on rehabilitation outcomes. RESULTS: The percentage of TBI patients with one or more comorbid disorder is higher among older (≥6

Androgen receptor gene and sex-specific Alzheimer's disease.

Women are at a 2-fold risk of developing late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) (onset at 65 years of age or older) compared with men. During perimenopausal years, women undergo hormonal changes that are accompanied by metabolic, cardiovascular, and inflammatory changes. These all together have been suggested as risk factors for late-onset AD. However, not all perimenopausal women develop AD; we hypothesize that certain genetic factors might underlie the increased susceptibility for developing AD in postmenopausal women. We investigated the Androgen Receptor gene (AR) in a clinical cohort of male
