Morphological characteristics of Echinococcus granulosus derived from buffalo in Iran.

Cystic echinococcosis is a significant parasitic disease in Iran, where a variety of animals act as intermediate hosts. In this study, 25 isolates of Echinococcus granulosus obtained from water buffalo from various parts of Iran were characterized on the basis of the morphology of the metacestode and the adult worm. The characteristics of protoscoleces from the different studied areas were nearly similar. They showed 2 rows of alternating large and small hooks and their shapes were smooth in outline. In contrast to the protoscoleces, the adult rostellar hooks showed a rough outline. The result

Molecular characterization of livestock and human isolates of Echinococcus granulosus from south-west Iran.

Hydatidosis is an important public health problem in several parts of Iran. The aim of this molecular study is to investigate Echinococcus granulosus genotypes as the causative agents of hydatidosis in the south-west of Iran (Khuzestan province). In this study, isolates of 334 hydatid cysts were collected from the liver and lungs of 141 sheep, 104 cattle, 84 goats and 5 human cases. DNA was extracted and examined by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)-PCR. In addition, fragments

Ovine small intestinal adenocarcinomas are not associated with infection by herpesviruses, Helicobacter species or Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis.

Sheep in New Zealand more frequently develop small intestinal adenocarcinoma (SIA) than sheep in other countries. The reasons for this high rate of intestinal neoplasia are not known. In man, differences between countries in the incidence of neoplasia are often due to differences in the rate of infection by carcinogenic viruses or bacteria. Therefore, it was hypothesized that New Zealand sheep more frequently develop SIA as they are more frequently exposed to an infectious agent. This study compared rates of detection of herpesviruses, Helicobacter species, and Mycobacterium avium subspecies p

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for the detection of antibody to Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in the sera of livestock and wild vertebrates.

IgM antibody response to Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus was monitored in experimentally infected sheep and cattle by an IgM capture enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA). Specific binding of antigen was detected by a rabbit anti-CCHF horseradish peroxidase conjugate or a sandwich technique with hyperimmune mouse anti-CCHF ascitic fluid and commercially available anti-mouse immunoglobulin peroxidase conjugate. The persistence of IgM antibody activity was found to be of shorter duration than in humans, and this may be a function of the relative lack of susceptibility of these animals

An epidemiological analysis of factors influencing the increase in Taenia ovis prevalence during the New Zealand Echinococcus granulosus control program.

There was an 8-fold increase in the national prevalence of Taenia ovis in dogs during the first decade of the New Zealand hydatid disease control program. The temporal patterns in the prevalence of T. ovis were similar in both rural working dogs and urban pet dogs, with the highest prevalence found in the sheep farming areas. The dramatic increase in the prevalence of T. ovis was a reflection of the change in source of food for many working dogs, from the traditional raw viscera to carcase meat of sheep, a change necessitated by hydatid disease control. Other factors influencing the rise in pr

Serological survey to determine the occurrence of malignant catarrhal fever infection in the Japanese small ruminant population from northern districts.

Ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) causes sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF), and is responsible for economic losses in cattle and other susceptible species around the world. A survey of 154 serum samples from 14 flocks in 3 Japanese prefectures (Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate) was undertaken between 2007 and 2008 to test for antibodies to OvHV-2. OvHV-2 was present in 56 sheep and 2 goats, with 37.66% of samples having a positive reaction using a serum neutralization test. The immune reaction reported in goats could result from Caprine herpesvirus-2. These results indicate that sheep a

The development of oral lesions in lambs naturally infected with orf virus.

Stomatitis in sheep caused by orf virus can be confused with lesions of more economically significant diseases, including foot-and-mouth disease, but there is no published account of the sequential development of oral orf lesions in the sheep. This report describes the clinical appearance of such lesions during a natural outbreak of the disease in young lambs. Lesions were seen on the gingiva, the tongue and the dental pad/hard palate, and progressed from small erythematous papules to larger, often coalescing papules that in some cases were ulcerated. Resolution started within seven days and w

A preliminary study on dicrocoeliasis in Egypt, with a general review.

Dicrocoelium dendriticum (D. dendriticum) is a lancet-shape liver fluke that affects sheep and mammals including man. Human and animal infections have been world widely reported particularly in some of the Eastern Mediterranean sheep raising countries. Infection is acquired by eating the second intermediate host (17 species of ants) with raw fruits, vegetables, herbs or even with the drinking water. As for the first intermediate host, there is about 54 different species of land snails. In spite of the fact that both the first and second intermediate hosts of D. dendriticum are available in Egy

Echinococcus granulosus in animals in northern India.

The prevalence of larval Echinococcus granulosus in buffaloes, sheep and goats and in adult stray and shepherd dogs was studied in northern India. A total of 48.1% of 754 buffaloes, 30.5% of 1215 sheep and 21.0% of 447 goats were found to be infected with this parasite. The prevalence of infection in buffaloes was higher in older animals than in younger animals. The lungs and livers appeared to be the sites of predilection. A high percentage of cysts from buffaloes (71.1%) were sterile, whereas a high percentage (90.0%) of cysts from sheep and goats were fertile. Shepherd dogs showed a higher

A genetic comparison of human and wildlife isolates of Echinococcus granulosus in Queensland: public health implications.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that the hydatid parasite infecting macropods and dingoes in Queensland is a sylvatic strain of Echinococcus granulosus, distinct from the domestic strain which produces cysts in sheep and humans. DESIGN: Molecular biological techniques were used to compare DNA isolated from hydatid cysts from humans, local macropods and sheep from New South Wales and the United Kingdom, as well as from adult tapeworms in dingoes. SETTING: The human cysts were surgically resected from two patients seen with hydatidosis in Brisbane teaching hospitals over a one-year period. N

A comprehensive overview of the epidemiology of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in animals from Iraq.

The present study provides the first comprehensive evaluation of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infections in Iraqi animals and birds. Data from 116 Iraqi studies were subjected to various meta-analyses, and all published Iraqi T. gondii-SAG3 and N. caninum-NC5 nucleotide sections were molecularly analyzed. For T. gondii, the pooled prevalence estimates in various animals exceeded the global averages. Cats showed a high seroprevalence (45.2%) and oocyst shedding (16.7%), suggesting a widespread environmental contamination. Sheep and goats exhibited high pooled seroprevalence (46.9% and

Effects of Yeast Culture on Lamb Growth Performance, Rumen Microbiota, and Metabolites.

The effects of incorporating yeast culture (YC) into pelleted feeds on sheep production and the potential impact on rumen microbial populations, microbial metabolism, and fermentation have not been extensively studied. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of YC on growth performance, rumen tissue development, rumen fermentation, and rumen microflora in sheep and to explore the potential microbial mechanisms involved. Fifty healthy 3-month-old male lambs of small-tailed Han sheep, with an average weight of 28.44 ± 0.63 kg, were randomly divided into five groups: control (0% YC), 3% YC, 6% YC

The development, validation and application of an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of antibodies to Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies dysgalactiae in lamb and ewe sera.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal infectious arthritis (NIA) is a bacterial disease of lambs caused by Streptococcus dysgalactiae sub species dysgalactiae (SDSD). NIA negatively impacts animal welfare; whilst its control entails widespread antibiotic use. The aims of this study are to develop, validate and apply an indirect, ELISA assay to inform SDSD vaccine development and epidemiology studies. METHODS: The antigen (inactivated isolate of SDSD) was incubated with sera from SDSD infected sheep, negative control sheep and serum from sheep flocks with outbreaks of SDSD NIA. SDSD antibody was detected with

Epidemiological Investigation of Meningeal Worm-Induced Mortalities in Small Ruminants and Camelids Over a 19 Year Period.

Meningeal worm, or Parelaphostrongylus tenuis (P. tenuis) is a nematode parasite that can invade the nervous system of small ruminant and camelid species such as alpaca, llama, goats and sheep. Limited reports exist on the epidemiology of disease caused by the nematode in susceptible livestock. We examined archived necropsy reports from small ruminant and camelid mortalities that were submitted, post mortem, to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (MNVDL) during 2001-2019 for gross necropsy, histopathology, and pathogen screening. We estimated P. tenuis-induced mortalit
