Does humeral torsion play a role in shoulder and elbow injury profiles of overhead athletes: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Humeral retrotorsion (HRT) is one bony adaptation that occurs in overhead athletes. This bony adaptation often leads to bilateral changes in range of motion at the glenohumeral joint. Because HRT can create different stress environments on the surrounding tissue, it may play a role in upper-limb injury and pain profiles. Therefore, the aim of this review was to examine whether HRT plays a role in shoulder and elbow injury profiles. METHODS: Two separate critical appraisal tools were administered: the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (case control) and the Appraisal Tool for Cross-sectional

The Law of Use and Disuse: Critical Shoulder Angle and Rotator Cuff Tears-Association Does Not Imply Causation.

The critical shoulder angle has been associated with the development of rotator cuff lesions. Over time, this association has been interpreted as a cause-effect relation without scientific evidence. Beyond the controversies that exist on the reliability and relevance of this radiographic parameter, the critical shoulder angle per se may not be responsible for rotator cuff tears because patient activities throughout several decades could induce not only cuff lesions but also bone remodeling at the acromial level.

The position of the upper limb during shoulder arthroscopy does not affect the distance between axillary nerve and glenoid.

PURPOSE: The segment of the axillary nerve (AxN) near the glenoid rim is at risk of iatrogenic lesion during arthroscopic procedures. We hypothesize that the distance between the AxN and the glenoid rim is not modified by the patient's positioning. The primary objective was to compare the position of the AxN with the inferior glenoid rim in lateral decubitus or in beach chair and positions of the upper limb. METHODS: Sixteen shoulders were dissected in beach chair position with the shoulder in neutral rotation. Needle one was placed in the axillary nerve where it was the closest with the infe

Does the posterior glenoid osteotomy reduce the rate of recurrence in patients with posterior shoulder instability - A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Posterior shoulder instability (PSI) is becoming an increasingly recognised condition. A number of different treatment modalities exist to treat PSI including arthroscopic or open surgeries when non-operative treatment has failed. The primary aim of this systematic review was to analyse the rate of recurrent instability after posterior glenoid osteotomy (PGO) for recurrent PSI, while secondary aim was to identify complication rate and the amount of retroversion correction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A review of the online databases MEDLINE and Embase was conducted on 1 November 2019 ac

Phenol Neurolysis for the Management of Shoulder Spasticity in Early Recovery From Traumatic Brain Injury: A Case Report.

This case describes a 16-year-old boy who suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. The patient gradually recovered but developed debilitating spasticity mainly in left triceps muscle, abnormal positioning of shoulder girdle complex, and shoulder pain. Phenol (6%) was injected to axillary and radial nerves under the guidance of electrical stimulation and ultrasound imaging at 10 weeks after the initial injury. After injection, triceps spasticity and shoulder pain were immediately reduced, and abnormal positions of shoulder girdle complex and elbow joint gradually returned to functional limits

Ultrasound versus magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of shoulder joint pathologies in a cohort of rheumatoid arthritis patients.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease that has a great impact on different joints, may result in their destruction and loss of function. Although the shoulder is affected in a large portion of patients with RA, it does not receive much attention during the follow up of RA. The precise diagnosis of shoulder pain in RA is a clinical challenge and benefits from a reliable imaging modality to detect its exact origin. AIM: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound (US) in detecting shoulder joint pathologies in RA, considering magnetic resonance imaging (M

Geometric modification of the humeral position after total reverse shoulder arthroplasty: what is the optimal lowering of the humerus?

BACKGROUND: The main mechanical effect after reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) is the lowering of the glenohumeral rotation center. The optimal value of the humeral lowering after RSA is still debated. The main objective of our study was to determine the lowering and medialization of the humerus and to correlate these parameters with short-term functional results. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 70 patients with complete radiographic and clinical data. A multivariate analysis was used to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes with the humeral lowering. RESULTS: The mean h

Evaluating an open-loop functional electrical stimulation controller for holding the shoulder and elbow configuration of a paralyzed arm.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a promising solution for restoring functional motion to individuals with paralysis, but the potential for achieving full-arm reaching motions with FES for various desired tasks has not been realized. We present an open-loop controller capable of calculating and applying the necessary muscle stimulations to hold the wrist of an individual with high tetraplegia at any desired position. We used the controller to hold the wrist at a series of static positions. The controller was capable of discriminating between different wrist positions. The average dist
