Novel single nucleotide polymorphism biomarkers to predict opioid effects for cancer pain.

There have been few studies on predictive biomarkers that may be useful to select the most suitable opioids to optimize therapeutic efficacy in individual patients with cancer pain. We recently investigated the efficacy of morphine and oxycodone using single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) rs4680 gene as a biomarker (RELIEF study). To explore additional biomarkers that may enable the selection of an appropriate opioid for individual patients with cancer pain, three SNPs were examined: C-C motif chemokine ligand 11 (CCL11; rs17809012), histamine N-meth

Tendon transfer in spastic cerebral palsy upper limb.

Cerebral palsy (CP) in upper limb produces functional, aesthetic and hygienic issues, and is not always amenable to surgical procedures. We are reporting a single-center, long follow-up experience with tendon transfer in wrist and forearm CP. The CP cases who had undergone tendon transfer in hand, wrist and forearm in a 14-year period were evaluated for change in motion, function and cosmetic appearance and also assessed by Manual Ability Classification System (MACS), and Dash (Disability of Arm, Shoulder, Hand) scores. Forty-two spastic CP patients with a mean age of 19.81 (10-34 years, SD: 5

Additional predictions for forensic DNA phenotyping of externally visible characteristics using the ForenSeq and Imagen kits.

Multiplex DNA typing methods using massively parallel sequencing can be used to predict externally visible characteristics (EVCs) in forensic DNA phenotyping through the analysis of single-nucleotide polymorphisms. The focus of EVC determination has focused on hair color, eye color, and skin tone as well as visible biogeographical ancestry features. In this study, we researched off-label applications beyond what is currently marketed by the manufacturer of the Verogen ForenSeq kit primer set B and Imagen primer set E SNP loci. We investigated additional EVC predictions by examining published g

Partial Response to Antidepressant Treatment: The Role of Nutraceutical Compounds.

OBJECTIVE: Depression represents one of the most severe psychiatric disorders, characterized by low mood episodes, as well as loss of interest. Major Depressive Episodes (MDE) treatment relies primarily on monoaminergic prescriptions. However, although the presence of many antidepressant medications, their efficacy is still partial. A promising intervention to improve antidepressant treatment may be the use of adjunctive nutraceuticals. Aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy of a N-Acetyl-cysteine, S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine and Folic acid's combination for the treatment of depressiv

Implementation of free-draft text messaging to enhance care retention and satisfaction for persons living with HIV infection.

Eligible persons with HIV infection can receive client-centered case management to coordinate medical and social services. Novel mobile health interventions could improve effective case management and retention in care, an important goal to help end the HIV epidemic. Using a hybrid type I effectiveness-implementation design, we assessed whether access to bidirectional, free-draft secure text messaging with a case manager and clinic pharmacist could improve client satisfaction and care retention in a Southern academic HIV clinic. Sixty-four clients enrolled between November 2019 and March 2020,

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in Children: Clinical Characteristics of an Outbreak in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a relatively common mild viral infection that usually affects young children, mainly occurring during the late spring, early summer, and fall months. It is most commonly caused by members of the human enterovirus (HEV) genus. Recently, HFMD has received renewed attention because of evidence that this disease could have clinical, epidemiological, and etiological characteristics different from those initially associated with it. HFMD may be associated with neurologic or cardiopulmonary complications and can, rarely, lead to death. Our study was a retrospec

Inflammatory and Prothrombotic Biomarkers, DNA Polymorphisms, MicroRNAs and Personalized Medicine for Patients with Peripheral Arterial Disease.

Classical risk factors play a major role in the initiation and development of atherosclerosis. However, the estimation of risk for cardiovascular events based only on risk factors is often insufficient. Efforts have been made to identify biomarkers that indicate ongoing atherosclerosis. Among important circulating biomarkers associated with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are inflammatory markers which are determined by the expression of different genes and epigenetic processes. Among these proinflammatory molecules, interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, several adhesion molecules, CD40 ligand,

Typologies of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Functions and Clinical Correlates Among Inpatient Youth.

This study identified typologies of specific non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) functions among youth admitted for psychiatric hospitalization and investigated clinically relevant correlates. Inpatient youth (n = 68) aged 10-17 years reported on their reasons to engage in NSSI, frequency and severity of NSSI, and symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). A latent class analysis using youth's specific NSSI functions as indicators found two NSSI function typologies, which were differentially associated with clinical correlates. The Multiple Functions class (n = 28) endorsed to "feel someth

Of masks and methylene blue-The use of methylene blue photochemical treatment to decontaminate surgical masks contaminated with a tenacious small nonenveloped norovirus.

BACKGROUND: In the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, reuse of personal protective equipment, specifically that of medical face coverings, has been recommended. The reuse of these typically single-use only items necessitates procedures to inactivate contaminating human respiratory and gastrointestinal pathogens. We previously demonstrated decontamination of surgical masks and respirators contaminated with infectious SARS-CoV-2 and various animal coronaviruses via low concentration- and short exposure methylene blue photochemical treatment (10 µM methylene blue, 30 minutes of 12,500-lux red li

A Case of Multinucleate Cell Angiohistiocytoma with New Reflectance Confocal Microscopy Findings.

Multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma (MCAH) is a rare, benign, vascular or fibrohistiocytic tumor usually presenting as single or multiple, reddish-brown papules mostly affecting the limbs and dorsum of the hands of middle-aged females. Since 1985, relatively few MCAH cases have been reported. In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) findings of MCAH have never been described. We report a case of MCAH with new non-invasive imaging findings through RCM in correlation with dermoscopy and histopathology.
