Amniotic band sequence (ABS) is an uncommon and heterogeneous congenital disorder caused by entrapment of fetal parts by fibrous amniotic bands, causing distinctive structural abnormalities involving limbs, trunk, and craniofacial regions. The incidence ranges between 1/1200 and 1/15,000 live births, but is higher in stillbirths and previable fetuses. The intrinsic theory attributes the constriction band syndrome as an inherent development defect of embryogenesis while the extrinsic theory proposes that an early amnion rupture is responsible for the adherent bands. It is also suggested that am

A 67-year-old man started to show symptoms of dementia and developed convulsions accompanied by presyncope. Since an old cerebral infarction was found, he was given a diagnosis of symptomatic epilepsy, treated with antiepileptics. Dementia progressed rapidly, resulting in admission to a dementia ward. There were no physical abnormalities, and only slight elevations of LDH and CRP were noted. He suddenly developed a fever between 38°C and 39°C. Only the serum concentration of soluble IL-2 receptor was elevated at 6,430 U/L. Although a malignant tumor of the lymphatic system was suspected, there

OBJECTIVES: The epidemiology of specific sensitization to inhalant allergens remains unknown in patients at tertiary rhinology clinics. We used skin prick testing (SPT) to assess sensitization to major aeroallergens in order to evaluate the prevalence of specific rhinologic diseases, the frequency of polysensitization and the relationship between nasal symptoms, nasal endoscopy parameters, diagnosis and sensitization.
METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records was conducted at the ENT Department of the Catholic University Hospital in Leuven, Belgium. The study analyzed the medical dat

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and characteristics of endocrinopathies at diagnosis of POEMS (polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M protein, and skin changes) syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: From January 1, 1960, through June 30, 2006, we identified 170 patients with POEMS syndrome in the Mayo Clinic dysproteinemia database. We abstracted information about endocrine abnormalities from their medical records.
RESULTS: Of the 170 patients with POEMS syndrome during the entire study period, the 64 patients seen after 2000 had more complete endocrine evaluations; of these 64 pat

OBJECTIVE: Chronic involvement of the nervous system is relatively rare in sarcoidosis. We describe 7 cases that fulfil Zajicek's criteria for neurosarcoidosis (NS) and propose some modifications to such criteria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients were admitted for various neurological syndromes: 2 cases presented with chronic lymphocytic meningitis, 4 with spinal cord symptoms, one case was initially confused with multiple sclerosis. Serological tests, immunological screening, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis, bacteriological and viral testing were performed in all patients. Spinal and c

Isolated congenital nail dysplasia is an autosomal dominant disorder recently observed in a large family from southern Germany. The disorder is characterized by longitudinal streaks, thinning, and impaired formation of the nail plates leading to increased vulnerability of the free nail margins. In most cases, all fingernails and toenails are similarly involved with some accentuation of the thumb and great toenails. Histologic changes include hypergranulosis of the nail matrix and epithelial outgrowths from the nail bed. Patients do not show any alterations of hair growth and dentition, no malf

BACKGROUND: The Morquio syndrome is a rare autosomal-recessive mucopolysaccharidosis. The Morquio syndrome is characterized by a reduced activity of N-acetylgalactosamine-6-sulfate-sulfatase (type A), or beta-galactosidase (type B). This deficiency leads to a lysosomal storage disease with accumulation of keratan sulfate und chondroitin-6-sulfate in connective tissue, skeletal system und teeth. Consequently, abnormalities of the skeletal system, aortic valvular disease and dental abnormalities occur. Ophthalmologically, diffuse corneal opacification and alterations of the trabecular meshwork--

We report the features of a group of 41 patients with Paget's disease (PD) who were identified in a cross sectional study in the "Sierra de la Cabrera" (Madrid). As the screening test, we used serum alkaline phosphatase quantification, and the diagnosis was confirmed by radiological study. This biochemical parameter shows an excellent diagnostic performance, with a sensitivity of 98% and a specificity of 85%. The prevalence in the population over 40 years of age is 6.37% (95% CI 4.79-7.95) which, comparing it with that from other areas, suggests that this region is a "focus" of PD. 51% of case

LGL leukemia results from a chronic, clonal proliferation of LGL. Chronic neutropenia with recurrent bacterial infection and splenomegaly are common clinical manifestations. Rheumatoid arthritis coexists in some of these patients, who thus resemble patients with Felty syndrome. Other hematologic abnormalities that may occur include pure red-cell aplasia and adult-onset cyclic neutropenia. Lymphoid infiltration of bone marrow, splenic red pulp cords, and hepatic sinusoids is characteristic; lymph node and skin involvement are rare. Multiple serologic abnormalities are frequently present, includ

The frequent occurrence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in association with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) could be due to the fact that the etiological agent of this tumor is the same retrovirus causing AIDS, to another oncogenic virus frequently found in AIDS patients, or to the unmasking of the tumorigenic potential of KS cells by immunosuppression. We have therefore investigated the presence of DNA sequences homologous to the AIDS retrovirus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and hepatitis B virus in 13 KS necropsies and biopsies from AIDS patients. All KS DNA samples were negative for AIDS

Background: Skin photoaging, primarily induced by chronic ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure, is characterized by dryness, wrinkle formation, pigmentation abnormalities, and reduced skin elasticity, resulting from oxidative stress, inflammation, and degradation of the extracellular matrix. Codonopsis pilosula, a traditional food-medicine homologous plant, is recognized for its anti-aging properties. However, its lipophilic components (designated as CP-L) remain insufficiently explored. Methods: Herein, we developed a thermosensitive nanogel encapsulating CP-L-loaded transferosomes (CP-L nanog

Transient abnormal myelopoiesis (TAM) is a transitory, myeloproliferative condition nearly exclusively present in infants with complete trisomy 21 (T21), or in its rare form, T21 mosaicism. We present here a case study of a neonate diagnosed with T21 mosaicism and TAM who did not exhibit the typical phenotypic features of down syndrome (DS), but displayed hematologic abnormalities, in addition to hepatosplenomegaly. Initial genetic testing suggested acute myeloid leukemia (AML) but subsequent evaluations were indicative of T21 mosaicism confined to the myeloid cell line, with negative results

Motor Neuron Diseases (MNDs), familial and sporadic, are progressive neurodegenerative disorders that, for an extended period in the past, were considered purely motor disorders. During the course of the disease, however, some patients exhibit concomitant non-motor signs; thus, MNDs are currently perceived as multisystem disorders. Assessment of non-motor symptoms is usually performed clinically, although laboratory tests can also be routinely used to objectively evaluate these symptoms. Sympathetic Skin Response (SSR) is an example of a neurophysiological test that has been used in cases of A

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) infection is the most prevalent and resistant bacterial infection, posing a worldwide health risk. Compared with healthy people, diabetes patients with weak immune function and abnormal metabolism are more vulnerable to bacterial infection, which aggravates the intensity of infection and causes a series of common and dangerous complications, such as diabetes foot ulcer (DFU). Due to metabolic abnormalities of diabetic patients, S. aureus on the skin surface of DFU transitions from a commensal to an invasive infection. During this process, S. aureus resists a s

MandibuloAcral Dysplasia associated to MTX2 gene (MADaM) is a recently described progeroid syndrome (accelerated aging disease) whose clinical manifestations include skin abnormalities, growth retardation, and cardiovascular diseases. We previously proposed that mtx-2-deficient C. elegans could be used as a model for MADaM and to support this, we present here our comprehensive phenotypic characterization of these worms using atomic force microscopy (AFM), transcriptomic, and oxygen consumption rate analyses. AFM analysis showed that young mtx-2-less worms had a significantly rougher, less elas

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a pediatric condition characterized by clinical features that resemble accelerated aging. The abnormal accumulation of a toxic form of the lamin A protein known as progerin disrupts cellular functions, leading to various complications, including growth retardation, loss of subcutaneous fat, abnormal skin, alopecia, osteoporosis, and progressive joint contractures. Death primarily occurs as the result of complications from progressive atherosclerosis, especially from cardiac disease, such as myocardial infarction or heart failure, or cerebrovascula

Neu-Laxova syndrome (NLS) is a rare lethal disorder with autosomal recessive inheritance and is characterized by multiple congenital anomalies. Our case of NLS presented with severe intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), abnormal facial features, severe central nervous system malformations, skeletal muscle contractures, and the hallmark signs of NLS: ichthyotic skin and excessive subcutaneous tissue with edema. Additionally, testing amniotic fluid from a prior pregnancy with a fetus showing similar abnormalities revealed several regions of homozygosity; one of these regions involved chromosom

A tracheal bronchus is a congenital abnormality of the tracheobronchial tree in which a displaced or accessory bronchus arises from the trachea superior to its bifurcation. We herein report a case in which a tracheal bronchus was incidentally found after induction of general anesthesia, and we discuss the potential airway management problems that may have ensued. An 80-year-old man was scheduled for buccal mucosa resection and abdominal skin grafting for treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the left buccal mucosa. Because of trismus and anticipated airway difficulty, an awake intubation was

The Goldenhar syndrome also known as oculo-auriculo-vertebral dysplasia is one of the rare congenital defects that usually involves the impaired development of structures derived from first and second branchial arches such as ears, eyes, mandible, palate and various other structures of the face along with spinal abnormalities. The severity of Goldenhar syndrome anomalies can range from minor to severe, and patients with modest facial asymmetry to those with a highly evident facial abnormality. The most typical characteristics of this condition are dental ailments and impaired development of th
