Correlates of e-cigarette use for smoking cessation among clients in residential substance use disorder treatment.

Little is known about e-cigarette use among persons in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, or their use of e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. Prevalence of e-cigarette use and correlates of e-cigarette use for smoking cessation were examined among clients in SUD treatment. Participants (n = 332) were current cigarette smokers recruited from 20 residential SUD programs in California. We used multivariable logistic regression to identify correlates of using e-cigarettes for quitting smoking. Almost half (45.2%) of the sample had ever used e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, and 34% had used

Association between tobacco use and symptomatology in individuals at ultra-high risk to develop a psychosis: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence rates and impact of tobacco smoking in individuals with a psychotic disorder have become an increasing interest. Little is known about tobacco smoking in individuals at ultra-high risk of psychosis (UHR). METHODS: We studied 345 UHR individuals of the high-risk study of the European network of national schizophrenia networks studying Gene-Environment Interactions (EU-GEI). Smoking status and the number of cigarettes per day were assessed at multiple moments using the CIDI. Symptom severity at each time point was assessed using CAARMS. Linear mixed-effects analy

A polygenic approach to the association between smoking and schizophrenia.

Smoking prevalence in schizophrenia is considerably larger than in general population, playing an important role in early mortality. We compared the polygenic contribution to smoking in schizophrenic patients and controls to assess if genetic factors may explain the different prevalence. Polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for smoking initiation and four genetically correlated traits were calculated in 1108 schizophrenic patients (64.4% smokers) and 1584 controls (31.1% smokers). PRSs for smoking initiation, educational attainment, body mass index and age at first birth were associated with smoking i

Patients with atherosclerotic peripheral arterial disease have a high risk of lung cancer: Systematic review and meta-analysis of literature.

PURPOSE: Lung cancer and atherosclerosis share common risk factors. Literature data suggest that the prevalence of lung malignancy in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is higher than in the general population. Our goal was to determine, through a systematic literature review, the prevalence of lung cancer in patients with PAD. METHODS: We consulted available publications in the Cochrane library, MEDLINE, PUBMED, EMBASE, and ClinicalTrials.gov. We included all articles, written in English or French, published between 1990 and 2020 reporting the prevalence of lung cancer in patien

Indoor Air Pollution and Susceptibility to Tuberculosis Infection in Urban Vietnamese Children.

Rationale: The Southeast Asian tuberculosis burden is high, and it remains unclear if urban indoor air pollution in this setting is exacerbating the epidemic. Objectives: To determine the associations of latent tuberculosis with common urban indoor air pollution sources (secondhand smoke, indoor motorcycle emissions, and cooking) in Southeast Asia. Methods: We enrolled child household contacts of patients with microbiologically confirmed active tuberculosis in Vietnam, from July 2017 to December 2019. We tested children for latent tuberculosis and evaluated air pollution exposures with questio

Social Smoking Environment and Associations With Cardiac Rehabilitation Attendance.

PURPOSE: Continued cigarette smoking after a major cardiac event predicts worse health outcomes and leads to reduced participation in cardiac rehabilitation (CR). Understanding which characteristics of current smokers are associated with CR attendance and smoking cessation will help improve care for these high-risk patients. We examined whether smoking among social connections was associated with CR participation and continued smoking in cardiac patients. METHODS: Participants included 149 patients hospitalized with an acute cardiac event who self-reported smoking prior to the hospitalization

Impact of demographic and perioperative risk factors on complication rates in skin-sparing/nipple-sparing mastectomy with implant-based reconstruction using titanized polypropylene mesh (TiLOOP® Bra).

BACKGROUND: Skin/nipple-sparing mastectomies (SSM/NSSM) have been reported to have acceptable complication rates and good aesthetic outcomes with high patient satisfaction. However, in this relatively young and rapidly expanding field of reconstructive plastic surgery, differences in perioperative management are noted between breast centers. Prospective studies of complication rates using a titanized polypropylene mesh (TiLOOP® Bra) are currently lacking. METHODS: A prospective subgroup analysis was performed based on the data set of the prospective, single-arm, multicenter observational stud
