Tobacco withdrawal-induced changes in sensorimotor filtering as a predictor of smoking lapse in trauma-exposed individuals.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is a measure of sensorimotor filtering thought to shield the processing of initial weaker auditory stimuli from interruption by a later startle response. Previous studies have shown smoking withdrawal to have a negative impact on sensorimotor filtering, particularly in individuals with psychopathology. Because tobacco use may alleviate sensory and sensorimotor filtering deficits, we examined whether smoking withdrawal-induced changes in PPI were associated with maintenance of smoking abstinence in trauma-exposed individuals with and without PTSD who were attempting to

Methylation scores for smoking, alcohol consumption and body mass index and risk of seven types of cancer.

Methylation marks of exposure to health risk factors may be useful markers of cancer risk as they might better capture current and past exposures than questionnaires, and reflect different individual responses to exposure. We used data from seven case-control studies nested within the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study of blood DNA methylation and risk of colorectal, gastric, kidney, lung, prostate and urothelial cancer, and B-cell lymphoma (N cases = 3123). Methylation scores (MS) for smoking, body mass index (BMI), and alcohol consumption were calculated based on published data as weighted

Smoking, alcohol consumption, diabetes, body mass index, and peptic ulcer risk: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

Background: Observational evidence has shown that smoking, alcohol consumption, type 2 diabetes, and body mass index (BMI) are risk factors for peptic ulcer disease (PUD), including gastric ulcer (GU) and duodenal ulcer (DU). However, the observed associations may be confounding factors. Herein, we use Mendelian randomization (MR) to examine causal associations such as smoking, alcohol, type 2 diabetes, BMI, and risks of PUD. Methods: We used 8,17,41,325,82, 231, and 616 identified genetic variants as proxies for age of smoking initiation (AgeSmk), smoking cessation (SmkCes, current/former), n

Association of Change in Smoking Status and Subsequent Weight Change with Risk of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Smoking is considered a risk factor for the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the association of a weight change after a change in smoking status and the risk of NAFLD remains undetermined. METHODS: This study used the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort. Based on the first (2009 to 2010) and second (2011 to 2012) health examination periods, 139,180 adults aged at least 40 years were divided into nonsmoking, smoking cessation, smoking relapse, and sustained smoking groups. NAFLD was operationally defined using the fa

Electronic cigarette use and risk of COVID-19 among young adults without a history of cigarette smoking.

It is unknown whether use of e-cigarettes increases susceptibility to COVID-19. In a large clinical sample of young adults, we evaluated whether current or ever e-cigarette use was associated with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed COVID-19. To address the confounding of combustible smoking, the sample was restricted to never smokers. This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from the electronic health records of 74,853 young adults (aged 18-35 years), without a history of cigarette smoking, who were screened for e-cigarette use (current, former, never) in the Kaiser Permanente Nort

The Obesogenic Environment: Epigenetic Modifications in Placental Melanocortin 4 Receptor Gene Connected to Gestational Diabetes and Smoking.

BACKGROUND: Maternal metabolic insults as well as Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) influence the fetal health and may affect 'offspring's susceptibility to chronic diseases via epigenetic modifications. GDM, the most common metabolic disorder in pregnancy, can be considered the result of complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. A critical point in this view is the identification of genes which are epigenetically modified under the influence of GDM. The melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) gene plays a crucial role in nutritional health by suppressing appetite and participat

The impact of APOE and smoking history on cognitive function in older, long-term breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: This study aims to determine whether older breast cancer survivors score lower on neuropsychological tests compared to matched non-cancer controls and to test the hypotheses that survivors who were APOE ε4 carriers would have the lowest cognitive performance but that smoking history would decrease the negative effect of ε4 on cognition. METHODS: Female breast cancer survivors who had been diagnosed and treated at age 60 or older and were 5-15-year survivors (N = 328) and age and education matched non-cancer controls (N = 162) were assessed at enrollment and at 8-, 16-, and 24-month f

Effect of relative income price on smoking initiation among adolescents in Ghana: evidence from pseudo-longitudinal data.

OBJECTIVE: Many smokers initiate smoking during adolescence. Making tobacco products less affordable is one of the best ways to control tobacco use. Studies on the effect of relative income price (RIP (ie, affordability)) of cigarettes on smoking initiation are scarce in low-income and middle-income countries, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa where data are limited. The goal of this study is to examine the effect of cigarette RIP on adolescent smoking initiation in Ghana. SETTING: The study uses a pseudo-longitudinal data set constructed from the Global Youth Tobacco Surveys (GYTS (2000-2009

Light chain deposition disease masquerading as smoking-associated nodular glomerulosclerosis with deposits identified by electron microscopy only.

Light chain deposition disease (LCDD) is a form of monoclonal gammopathy of renal significance. The diagnosis is based on the immunofluorescence (IF) findings of linear monoclonal light chain staining of basement membranes throughout the kidney, which appear as non-organized, granular punctate to powdery electron dense deposits by electron microscopy (EM). Although "LCDD by IF only" without EM deposits has been well-described, LCDD identified by EM with negative IF is very rare and hardly mentioned in the literature. Herein we describe a case of lambda-type LCDD that appeared negative by IF an

Electronic Health Record-Embedded, Behavioral Science-Informed System for Smoking Cessation for the Parents of Pediatric Patients.

BACKGROUND: Helping parents quit smoking is a public health priority. However, parents are rarely, if ever, offered tobacco use treatment through pediatric settings. Clinical decision support (CDS) systems developed for the workflows of pediatric primary care may support consistent screening, treatment, and referral. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a CDS system by using human-centered design (HCD) that identifies parents who smoke, provides motivational messages to quit smoking (informed by behavioral science), and supports delivery of evidence-based tobacco treatment. METHODS: Our m

Genetic insights into smoking behaviours in 10,558 men of African ancestry from continental Africa and the UK.

Smoking is a leading risk factor for many of the top ten causes of death worldwide. Of the 1.3 billion smokers globally, 80% live in low- and middle-income countries, where the number of deaths due to tobacco use is expected to double in the next decade according to the World Health Organization. Genetic studies have helped to identify biological pathways for smoking behaviours, but have mostly focussed on individuals of European ancestry or living in either North America or Europe. We performed a genome-wide association study of two smoking behaviour traits in 10,558 men of African ancestry l

Smoking behavior among junior high school students based on the theory of planned behavior in Madura, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to assess attitudes, subjective norms, and intentions about early smoking behavior among junior and senior high school students in Sampang, Madura, Indonesia. CONTENT: Teenagers' smoking behavior is a phenomenon that needs careful examination and is easily recognized today. In Indonesia, the frequency of teenage smokers aged 10-18 years is growing every year. This age group is essential since most regular smokers start to smoke at this age. Although the Indonesian government has made preventive efforts, the prevalence of tobacco use remains high and continues to
