Prevalence of Opioid Use and Intimate Partner Violence among Pregnant Women in South-Central Appalachia, USA.

Background: Recent research indicates that pregnant women in rural communities are at increased risk of experiencing IPV and comorbid illicit opioid use compared to urban-residing pregnant women. Few studies of the interactions among rurality, substance use, and victimization in pregnant women exist. The current study sought to examine the relationship between IPV and opioid use and the interaction effects of rurality in Appalachian pregnant women. Methods: A convenience sample of pregnant women who were enrolled in a smoking cessation research study was used for this analysis. Participants in

Changes in Alcohol Consumption after 1 Year of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study in a Region of France.

BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence on how the COVID-19 pandemic changed patterns of alcohol consumption. While some studies have suggested that alcohol consumption decreased at the beginning of the pandemic, there are limited data for a longer period. The objective of this study was to investigate changes in alcohol consumption 1 year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in France, and to identify vulnerable subgroups in a French adult population. METHODS: This was a single-center, cross-sectional, descriptive study. Self-reported changes in alcohol consumption were collected from

General Considerations About Foot and Ankle Arthrodesis. Any Way to Improve Our Results?

Nonunion and adjacent joint osteoarthritis (OA) are known complications after a fusion procedure, and foot and ankle surgeons are commonly exposed to such disabling complications. Determining who is at risk of developing nonunion is essential to reducing nonunion rates and improving patient outcomes. Several evidenced-based modifiable risk factors related to adverse outcomes after foot and ankle arthrodesis have been identified. Patient-related risk factors that can be improved before surgery include smoking cessation, good diabetic control (HbAc1 <7%) and vitamin D supplementation. Intraopera

Mobile health in preventive cardiology: current status and future perspective.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite cutting edge acute interventions and growing preventive strategies supported by robust clinical trials, cardiovascular disease (CVD) has stubbornly persisted as a leading cause of death in the United States and globally. The American Heart Association recognizes mobile health technologies (mHealth) as an emerging strategy in the mitigation of CVD risk factors, with significant potential for improving population health. The purpose of this review is to highlight and summarize the latest available literature on mHealth applications and provide perspective on future dir

Severe multivessel coronary artery spasm detected by computed tomography: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac arrest caused by multivessel coronary artery spasm (CAS) is rare. Although coronary angiography (CAG) with provocation testing is the diagnostic gold standard in current vasospastic angina guidelines, it can cause severe procedure-related complications. Here, we report a novel technique involving dual-acquisition coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) to detect multivessel CAS in a patient who survived out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). CASE SUMMARY: A 58-year-old healthy Korean male survived OHCA caused by ventricular fibrill

Case series of MET exon 14 skipping mutation-positive non-small-cell lung cancers with response to crizotinib and cabozantinib.

The mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition (MET) gene is altered and becomes a driver mutation in up to 5% of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We report our institutional experience treating patients with MET exon 14 skipping (METex14) mutations, including responses to the MET inhibitors crizotinib and cabozantinib. We identified cases of NSCLC with METex14 mutations using an institutionally developed or commercial next-generation sequencing assay. We assessed patient and disease characteristics by retrospective chart review. Some patients were treated off-label by the physician with crizotin

Bupropion increases activation in nucleus accumbens during anticipation of monetary reward.

RATIONALE: Bupropion is used for major depressive disorder, smoking cessation aid, and obesity. It blocks reuptake of dopamine and noradrenaline and antagonizes nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. Animal studies showed that bupropion enhanced rewarding effects. In addition, bupropion has the potential to treat patients with reward processing dysfunction. However, neural substrates underlying the bupropion effects on reward function in human subjects are not fully understood. OBJECTIVES: We investigated single-dose administration of bupropion on neural response of reward anticipation in healthy

Effect of electronic cigarettes on human middle ear.

OBJECTIVE: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are the most commonly used electronic nicotine delivery systems and are a relatively new product designed for smoking cessation. The market scale of electronic cigarettes is growing rapidly, but the potential impact of e-cigarettes on public health has not yet been verified. In this study, we examined the effect of e-liquids on a human middle ear epithelial cell (HMEEC) line. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The main components of e-liquids are propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and flavoring agents with or without nicotine. We analyzed 73 bottles of e-l

[Nursing Care of Patients With Carotid Artery Stenosis Who Receive Carotid Artery Stent].

Atherosclerosis, a major cause of carotid artery stenosis, has a high correlation to stroke, which may induce transient ischemic attack (TIA) and/or permanent brain damage. The main treatment of carotid artery stenosis includes medication, carotid endarterectomy (CEA), and carotid artery stenting (CAS). However, when artery stenosis becomes severe, CEA or CAS is the most-often recommended intervention. CAS, a type of revascularization, is considered less invasive than CEA and is associated with a higher successful rate. CAS not only treats carotid stenosis effectively and reduces the incidence

Colorectal Cancer Screening and Prevention.

Colorectal cancer is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Most colorectal cancers arise from preexisting adenomatous or serrated polyps. The incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer can be reduced with screening of average-risk adults 50 to 75 years of age. Randomized controlled trials show evidence of reduced colorectal cancer-specific mortality with guaiac-based fecal occult blood tests and flexible sigmoidoscopy. There are no randomized controlled trials on the effectiveness of colonoscopy to reduce colorectal cancer-specific mortality; however, several random

Transepithelial exit of leucocytes: inflicting, reflecting or resolving airway inflammation?

The passage of infiltrated tissue granulocytes across airway epithelium into airway lumen is generally considered to be a pathogenic process in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). An alternative hypothesis is proposed here-namely that the transepithelial egression of infiltrated leucocytes acts to rid diseased airway tissues of proinflammatory cells efficiently and non-injuriously. Several clinical observations previously discussed as 'unexpected' and 'puzzling' support this hypothesis. In acutely resolving allergen challenge-induced inflammation, in patients with mild ast

Renovascular hypertension and ischemic nephropathy.

Renovascular disease remains among the most prevalent and important causes of secondary hypertension and renal dysfunction. Many lesions reduce perfusion pressure including fibromuscular diseases and renal infarction, but most are caused by atherosclerotic disease. Epidemiologic studies establish a strong association between atherosclerotic renal-artery stenosis (ARAS) and cardiovascular risk. Hypertension develops in patients with renovascular disease from a complex set of pressor signals, including activation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), recruitment of oxidative stress pathways, an

Fetal and neonatal nicotine exposure in Wistar rats causes progressive pancreatic mitochondrial damage and beta cell dysfunction.

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is currently recommended as a safe smoking cessation aid for pregnant women. However, fetal and neonatal nicotine exposure in rats causes mitochondrial-mediated beta cell apoptosis at weaning, and adult-onset dysglycemia, which we hypothesize is related to progressive mitochondrial dysfunction in the pancreas. Therefore in this study we examined the effect of fetal and neonatal exposure to nicotine on pancreatic mitochondrial structure and function during postnatal development. Female Wistar rats were given saline (vehicle control) or nicotine bitartrate (1 m
