Epidemiologic survey of 196 patients with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

This study examined the cross-sectional medical and social characteristics of children diagnosed with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS). A detailed questionnaire was mailed to all families with a child with CCHS who are affiliated with a family network or support group. The questionnaire response rate was >75% (n=196). Mean age was 10.22 years +/- 6.6 years (SD) (range, 0.4-38 years), with a 1:1 sex ratio. Multisystem involvement was almost universal among the cohort, with Hirschsprung's disease (HD) present in 16.3%; 61.7% of the children had a tracheotomy, but 14.3% were nev

Rites of passage: understanding participation of children with developmental coordination disorder.

Children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) experience difficulty participating in the typical activities of childhood and are known to have a more sedentary pattern of activities than their peers. Little research has been done to investigate the impact of these deficits on the lives of children with DCD and the importance of their participation in the typical activities of childhood. This qualitative study explored the impact of the disorder and the importance of participation for children with DCD from the perspective of the parent. Twelve in-depth interviews were conducted with

Task-independent functional brain activity correlation with skin conductance changes: an fMRI study.

Lesions of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex cause a loss of skin conductance response (SCR) to stimuli with affective content and an inability to integrate information with social consequences into decisions. Previous behavioral studies using a gambling task were able to differentiate patients with lesions in this region from normal subjects. In the present imaging study, this region, among others, was shown to be "spontaneously" activated during three different cognitive states: a gambling task, a working memory task, and resting state. SCR data were simultaneously collected during the scan

Communication Support and Training for Families Affected by Aphasia: A National Survey Exploring Perspectives of Professionals.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia affects both the individuals and their families, impacting communication, social connectedness, roles and mental health. The focus in neurorehabilitation often remains on the individual, yet research suggests that addressing the family as a system would be beneficial. It remains unknown to what extent this is translated into clinical practice. AIMS: To explore professionals' perspectives on communication support and training addressing the needs of families living with aphasia across disciplines, positions and stages of neurorehabilitation in Denmark. METHODS & PROCEDURES

Efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions for children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood. Although mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have been proposed as promising non-pharmacological treatments, evidence regarding their efficacy in children and adolescents with ADHD remains inconsistent. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted up to December 31, 2025, supplemented by manual screening of reference lists. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in which mindfulne

Further assessment of structural and social determinant of health effects on breast cancer care timelines: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Time to treatment initiation (TTI) delays result in worse cancer outcomes. Patients in under-resourced communities may experience TTI delays due to structural challenges and social determinants of health (SDOH), impacting access to timely care. We conducted a qualitative study in breast cancer patients with and without delayed TTI from an under-served community to explore barriers and facilitators to TTI from the patient perspective. METHODS: We interviewed 30 patients who received curative intent breast cancer treatment at Montefiore Medical Center from 2019 to 2024. Half of the

Factors that influence acute malnutrition detection and treatment by community health promoters in Samburu and Turkana counties, Kenya: A mixed methods study.

Global acute malnutrition (GAM) among children <5 years contributes to mortality and is a persistent problem in the drylands of Africa, including Samburu and Turkana Counties in Kenya, due to recurring droughts and other factors. In 2023, GAM prevalence was 20.3% in Samburu and 34.8% in Turkana, far exceeding the emergency threshold of 15%. Community health promoters (CHPs) are frontline members of the community health system who work with families to detect, treat, and refer acute malnutrition cases, but little is known about factors associated with these tasks. We conducted a mixed-method st

Stability or versatility: transitions in fentanyl routes of administration.

BACKGROUND: Transitions in how people use drugs have long influenced drug use research and the policy landscape. In unregulated drug markets, route of administration (ROA) transitions from injecting opioids to non-injecting modes of use, sometimes called reverse transitions, are rare but have been documented historically, driven by local characteristics including social networks and drug market factors. National and local data find ROA transitions are on the rise in the US. We investigated patterns of ROA transitions, including personal and market-based motivations and perceived effects and he

Experiences of older adult Filipino-Americans surrounding eye surgery and factors in health decision-making: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The greater San Francisco metropolitan bay area is home to 270,000 Filipino immigrants and the second largest Filipino-American population in the United States. Despite this, Filipino-Americans are aggregated with the general "Asian-American" category, making it a challenge to obtain accurate population health data on social determinants of health. One area that is concerning is the lack of research on Filipino-American eye health experiences. The Filipino-American population is an older community with a median age of 48 years old that experiences a high prevalence of diabetes and

Sickle cell disease awareness and perception among Christian religious leaders in Accra Metropolis: a qualitative study.

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a severe hemoglobin gene mutation disorder inherited from both parents. 2% of Ghanaian newborns are affected by SCD; one in three Ghanaians has the hemoglobin S gene. Christian religious leaders may play a role in the prevention of SCD through the promotion of genetic counseling, genotype screening for premarital couples, and offering counseling to couples on prenatal screening and diagnosis for SCD. However, little is known about the awareness and perception of SCD among Christian religious leaders in Ghana, and this study aims to explore these. This study adopted

An ecological study protocol for the multimodal investigation of the neurophysiological underpinnings of dyadic joint action.

A novel multimodal experimental setup and dyadic study protocol were designed to investigate the neurophysiological underpinnings of joint action through the synchronous acquisition of EEG, ECG, EMG, respiration and kinematic data from two individuals engaged in ecologic and naturalistic cooperative and competitive joint actions involving face-to-face real-time and real-space coordinated full body movements. Such studies are still missing because of difficulties encountered in recording reliable neurophysiological signals during gross body movements, in synchronizing multiple devices, and in d

Are pregnancy outcomes affected by the lack of legal status? A demographic study based on 850,288 live births in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: In the context of increased global mobility, it is fundamental to understand migrants' needs and how governments can ensure equal health opportunities for both regular and irregular migrants simply by applying low-cost primary health care measures. To identify health issues in which to intervene, this study analysed the impact of a mother's lack of legal status, together with available biological and socioeconomic characteristics, on four indicators of adverse perinatal outcomes in Switzerland. METHODS: Based on the exhaustive records of the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO)

Clinical phenotypes and prognostic factors in persons with hip osteoarthritis undergoing total hip arthroplasty: protocol for a longitudinal prospective cohort study (HIPPROCLIPS).

BACKGROUND: Large heterogeneity exists in the clinical manifestation of hip osteoarthritis (OA). It is therefore not surprising that pain and disability in individuals with hip OA and after total hip arthroplasty (THA) cannot be explained by biomedical variables alone. Indeed, also maladaptive pain-related cognitions and emotions can contribute to pain and disability, and can lead to poor treatment outcomes. Traumatic experiences, mental disorders, self-efficacy and social support can influence stress appraisal and strategies to cope with pain, but their influence on pain and disability has no
