A lifelong journey with stuttering: Experiences of adults who stutter in Türkiye.

This qualitative phenomenological study explored how adults who stutter in Türkiye experience stuttering across the life course and interpret their therapy experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten adults who stutter and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Three overarching themes were identified: growing up with feelings of conditional acceptance, living under anticipated negative evaluation, and reconstructing agency in therapy. Participants described stuttering as a relational and context-dependent experience shaped by social expectations across childhood and a

[Animal Societies Or Animal Colonies?].

In 1877, Alfred Espinas defended his PhD dissertation Animal Societies. In 1881, his former fellow student at the École normale supérieure, Edmond Perrier, meanwhile a full professor at the National Museum of Natural History, published Animal Colonies. Because of their similar views on the equivalence of social and organic structures, the two books were often equated posthumously despite the tense relationship between their authors, which received little to no scrutiny. Taking a socio-historical perspective on institutions and academic careers, this paper examines Espinas’s bitter criticism of

Spanish Clinical Management Guideline for Hidradenitis Suppurativa. Part I: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Disease Staging.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory disease that typically presents with nodules, abscesses, tunnels, and scars in areas rich in pilosebaceous units, such as the axillae and the inguinal and anogenital regions. It is a condition with a high potential for progression, characterized by inflammation and pain, and has a significant psychological and social impact, markedly affecting quality of life. In addition, it is an underdiagnosed disease with a considerable diagnostic delay, which may lead to disabling situations. Therapeutic management is complex because it must be adapted to

Is the KKondae as a common psychological construct? Testing the KKondae scale with the U.S. sample, and the preliminary study of predictors and consequences of Kkondae.

BACKGROUND: The research aims to explore the common nature of 'kkondae'-a Korean term denoting stubbornness-and its relevance across cultures, particularly examining the relationship between anxiety, kkondae tendencies, and resulting loneliness through difficulties in listening and acceptance in social interactions. METHODS: A sample of 454 individuals from the U.S. was surveyed online to assess the Korean-developed Kkondae scale's reliability and validity. Structural Equation Modeling revealed that higher levels of anxiety might lead to increased loneliness, with kkondae traits acting as an

Move&Connect-Caregivers: A virtual group intervention for caregivers of youth experiencing persisting symptoms after concussion.

Caregivers play a critical role in supporting youth experiencing persisting symptoms after concussion (PSAC). However, there are limited empirically validated interventions tailored to the specific needs of caregivers, such as improving concussion knowledge and supporting psychosocial wellbeing. This study aims to describe the development of a virtual group intervention for caregivers of youth experiencing PSAC, Move&Connect-Caregivers (M&C-C), and examine its feasibility. Nine mothers participated across two M&C-C groups. Feasibility metrics and semi-structured interviews were collected and a

Bridging the gap - Establishing a dental-oncology service in a cancer centre.

Dental disease remains the most common non-communicable disease worldwide. It predisposes patients to significant morbidities following bone modifying agents or radiation therapy to the head and neck. Preventative dental regimes effectively reduce the risk of both medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and osteoradionecrosis (ORN) in these patients. Co-ordination of routine dental care as a component of mainstream oncology treatment optimises long term outcomes for oncology patients. This case series offers insights into patient, institutional and social difficulties that challeng

Social Determinants of Adherence to Treatment for Tuberculosis Infection and Disease Among Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults: A Narrative Review.

Global efforts to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) must address the unique barriers that children (ages 0 through 9 years) and adolescents/young adults (AYA; ages 10 through 24 years) face in adhering to treatment for TB infection and disease. We conducted a narrative review to summarize current knowledge on the social determinants of treatment adherence among these age groups to guide efforts and policy to address their unique needs. Our findings revealed that research on TB treatment adherence among children and AYA is still in its nascent stage. The current literature revealed structural/communi

Exploring the experiences of black, indigenous and racialized graduate students: The classroom as a space of alterity, hostility and pedagogical labour.

Based on 22 semi-structured interviews, this article explores the experiences of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) graduate students in the social sciences and humanities at a medium-sized comprehensive university in Canada. This article explores how racialization and colonialism shape the experiences of BIPOC graduate students in the graduate-level classroom. BIPOC students may experience the classroom as a space of alterity, where they are made to feel alien and are pushed to represent their entire group; as a space of hostility where they encounter stereotypes and microaggressi

Determinants of Sexual Violence Against Married Women: Qualitative Evidence From Ghana.

Some evidence suggests that in sub-Saharan Africa, sexual violence is commonplace among married women, yet this problem is underresearched. Using qualitative methods and applying Heise's social-ecological model, this study examined the experiences of 15 Ghanaian women suffering sexual violence in their marriages. Results from the thematic analysis indicate several determinants of sexual violence. Whereas some participants identified macro-level and exosystem factors, including poverty, others pointed to micro-level and ontogenic factors, such as husbands' substance abuse. The results corrobora

The NIH's slow response to the AIDS epidemic and the dismissal of Pasteur's contributions: Learning from history.

The National Institutes of Health's (NIH) slow response to the AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s led to deaths and missed opportunities to stop the spread of the disease. In addition, the NIH systematically diminished the contributions of the scientists at the Pasteur Institute who discovered HIV and produced a superior AIDS test. I analyze these events by applying three social theories to the global response to the epidemic. Structuration, interorganizational learning, and negotiated order theories shed light on (1) the delay by the NIH in providing grants for AIDS research, (2) the inability

[Rehabilitation standards for follow-up treatment and rehabilitation of patients with ventricular assist device (VAD)].

The increasing use of ventricular assist devices (VADs) in terminal heart failure patients provides new challenges to cardiac rehabilitation physicians. Structured cardiac rehabilitation strategies are still poorly implemented for this special patient group. Clear guidance and more evidence for optimal modalities are needed. Thereby, attention has to be paid to specific aspects, such as psychological and social support and education (e.g., device management, INR self-management, drive-line care, and medication). In Germany, the post-implant treatment and rehabilitation of VAD Patients working g

Battling on the Home Front: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Conflict Behavior Among Military Couples.

This study evaluated interpersonal behavior differences among male military service members with and without PTSD and their female partners. Couples (N = 64) completed a 17-minute videotaped conflict discussion, and their interaction behavior was coded using the circumplex-based Structural Analysis of Social Behavior model (SASB; Benjamin, 1979, 1987, 2000). Within couples, the behavior of partners was very similar. Compared to military couples without PTSD, couples with PTSD displayed more interpersonal hostility and control. Couples with PTSD also exhibited more sulking, blaming, and control

Mini-implants: alternative for oral rehabilitation of a child with ectodermal dysplasia.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare congenital disease that affects several structures of ectodermal origin. The most commonly related oral characteristics are hypodontia, malformed teeth and underdeveloped alveolar ridges. New alternative treatments are needed due to the failure of the conventional prosthesis retention. This case report outlines the oral rehabilitation treatment of a 9-year-old girl with ectodermal dysplasia. The treatment was performed with conventional prosthesis upon mini-implants. The mini-implants provided prosthetic retention. The patient reported a good adaptation of the de

[Physicians as Experts of the Integration of war invalids of WWI and WWII].

After the First World War the large number of war invalids posed a medical as well as a socio-political problem. This needed to be addressed, at least to some extent, through healthcare providers (Versorgungsbehörden) and reintegration into the labour market. Due to the demilitarization of Germany, this task was taken on by the civil administration, which was dissolved during the time of National Socialism. In 1950, the Federal Republic of Germany enacted the Federal War Victims Relief Act (Bundesversorgungsgesetz), which created a privileged group of civil and military war invalids, whereas o
