Programmable plant nutrition through synthetic transportome engineering.

Plant nutrient homeostasis emerges from the coordinated transport, partitioning, and storage of nutrients across cellular compartments, tissues, and developmental stages. These processes form an interconnected transport system in which local changes in nutrient uptake, redistribution, or sequestration can propagate across biological scales and ultimately shape whole-plant nutrient status and growth. This system-level organization suggests that nutrient homeostasis should be viewed not simply as the output of individual transporters, but as an emergent property of a coordinated transport networ

Fiber-Optic Interference Microscopy for Label-Free Monitoring of Cancer Cell Secretion at a Single-Molecule Level.

Understanding cell secretion at the single-molecule level in a label-free manner is crucial for elucidating numerous biological processes relevant to health and disease. However, most current optical label-free approaches rely on strong photon confinement to enhance the signal contrast, and the associated photothermal effect limits their applications in continuous monitoring of molecular dynamics. Here, we propose fiber-optic interference microscopy (FOIM), which achieves label-free, high-contrast visualization of single molecules by monitoring the interference patterns on a microfiber. We dem

Single-photon emission from two-dimensional perovskites channeled through low-energy edge states.

Two-dimensional perovskites, an emerging family of van der Waals materials with an innate quantum-well structure, exhibit remarkable optical characteristics and compositional tunability. However, their potential as a source for quantum emitters remains unexplored. Here, we investigate low-energy edge states unique to two-dimensional perovskites using comprehensive photoluminescence imaging and spectroscopy, to further leverage them towards uncovering quantum emitters. In contrast to above-bandgap excitation, spatially localized single-photon emitters are realized through sub-bandgap energy exc

Impacts of Different Boundary Conditions on Dirac Pulse from a Well into Aquifer.

For a partially penetrating well, a Dirac pulse can be generated by sudden charge of water from the well end into the contiguous rock, and subsequently the pulse diffuses away in terms of slow P-wave. This process is described by the Green's function for the initial-value problem. The Green's functions subject to three boundary conditions (BC) are compared mutually, that is, no BC, zero Neumann BC and zero Dirichlet BC for infinitely far boundary, the confining unit and unconfined aquifer, respectively. The well end is set at 10 m below the boundary, and the mass of water suddenly injected is

Evolution of biphoton states in ghost imaging with multiple objects.

Quantum ghost imaging (GI) has significantly advanced the research and application of spatially entangled photon pairs over the past three decades. Nevertheless, existing works predominantly concentrate on qualitative analyses of GI results. The absence of rigorous theoretical models limits the capability of GI to address quantitative problems, which is essential in complex scenarios. Here, we present a comprehensive theoretical model that describes the evolution of the biphoton state throughout the GI process. Based on this model, we can explicitly analyze how the biphoton state evolves, and

A membrane-mediated algal-bacterial coupling strategy for energy - efficient and low-carbon PHA production.

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are promising substitutes for petroleum-based plastics, but their production is constrained by the high energy demand and CO2 emissions of mechanical aeration. We developed a membrane-mediated, photosynthetically coupled system in which a hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane enables gas exchange between spatially separated microalgal and PHA-storing mixed-culture chambers, establishing an internal O2-CO2 cycle. The effects of microbial-to-algal biomass ratio (Mp/Ma), substrate-to-microbe ratio (F/M), membrane area-to-volume ratio (θ) and initial inor

Beyond elongation: The multifaceted roles of gibberellins in symbiosis and root development.

Plants regulate root development in response to fluctuating environmental conditions, including establishing symbiotic relationships with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and nitrogen-fixing bacteria under nutrient limitation. These processes are orchestrated by plant hormones, particularly gibberellins, and the repressors of gibberellin signalling, DELLA proteins. Gibberellin and DELLAs serve as critical regulators in symbiotic signalling and root organogenesis, integrating hormonal and environmental cues with cellular patterning to direct plant development. This review explores the current under

Microbial and environmental regulation of greenhouse gas fluxes from marine ranching sediments under seasonal hypoxia.

Seasonal hypoxia presents a growing challenge in coastal ecosystems, especially in marine ranching zones characterized by intensive aquaculture and limited water exchange. This study assessed the impact of summer hypoxia on sedimentary greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, focusing on carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), in a northern Yellow Sea marine ranching area. By combining vertical water column profiling, sediment geochemical analysis, and microbial community characterization, the investigation documented spatial and temporal variations in gas concentrations and fluxes at the sediment-wate

Hofmeister-assisted electro-fabrication of Janus gelatin hydrogels with tunable structure and biofunctionality.

Natural vessel structures inspire Janus hydrogels with spatially separated functions. Here, we report a one-step electro-fabrication strategy to construct gelatin-based Janus hydrogels featuring a dense, hydrophobic inner layer and a porous, hydrophilic outer layer. Introducing sodium citrate generates a directional ion gradient under an electric field, triggering interface-directed gelation through the Hofmeister effect and enhancing anticoagulant performance. The layered architecture can be finely tuned by varying voltage, deposition time, and gelatin concentration, producing inner pores bel

Simultaneous CO2 and NO Conversion by Spatially Locating Dual Photocatalytic Sites on a Microporous Polymer.

Direct photocatalytic recycling of CO2 from practical exhaust gas is highly desirable but challenged by the competitive O2 reduction and coexisting NO pollutant. O2 as an inevitable component seriously suppresses CO2 reduction while being essential for photocatalytic NO removal. Herein, we introduce a SiO2-templated porphyrin-based polymer (STP) for integrating Pd(II) sites toward selective CO2 reduction and assembling TiO2 nanoparticles as NO oxidation sites. The TiO2-mediated electron transfer process facilitates the charge separation at the spatially separated Pd(II) and TiO2 sites. The O2

Macro- and Mesoporous Graphene-MXene Architectures Decorated with Rhodium Nanocrystals for Methanol Oxidation Electrocatalysis.

The development of advanced platinum-alternative anode catalysts with high catalytic activity and strong CO poison tolerance is of great significance to break through the technical bottleneck of the direct methanol fuel cell. Herein, we report the spatial construction of a rhodium-decorated three-dimensional macro- and mesoporous architecture built from holey graphene and holey Ti3C2Tx MXene (Rh/HG-HMX) through a combined oxidative-etching and solvothermal coassembly process. Such an exquisite structural design not only fully exposes the internal catalytically active sites as well as improves

Spermatogenesis Beyond DNA: Integrated RNA Control of the Epitranscriptome and Three-Dimensional Genome Architecture.

Spermatogenesis is a tightly coordinated differentiation program that sustains male fertility while transmitting genetic and epigenetic information to the next generation. This review consolidates mechanistic evidence showing how RNA-centered regulation integrates with the epitranscriptome and three-dimensional (3D) genome architecture to orchestrate germ-cell fate transitions from spermatogonial stem cells through meiosis and spermiogenesis. Recent literature is critically surveyed and synthesized, with particular emphasis on human and primate data and on stage-resolved maps generated by sing

Microtubule binding protein Togaram1 is required for proper development of mammalian forebrain and neural primary cilia.

Proper forebrain development relies on precise spatial and temporal control of early neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation and later neurogenesis. Brain malformations can arise when these processes are defective. Joubert Syndrome (JS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is diagnosed by a mid-hindbrain malformation, but often includes forebrain defects such as microcephaly, which are less understood. One gene recently linked to Joubert Syndrome with microcephaly is Togaram1 , which encodes a TOG domain microtubule binding protein shown to affect primary cilia. In the embryonic dorsal forebrain

Energy Transfer Pathways in Plant Photosystem I from First-Principles Modeling.

The photosynthetic supercomplex Photosystem I-light harvesting complex I (PSI-LHCI) of plants is a molecular machine involved in energy conversion. Concentration of energy in the PSI reaction center is strikingly efficient, despite the unusual presence of low-energy, trapping states (red forms) spatially far from the reaction center. The main energy transfer processes occurring in PSI-LHCI are still unclear, as the size and complexity of the system prevent immediate interpretation of spectroscopic signals and challenges traditional modeling approaches. Here we present a multiscale quantum chem

Energy evolution mechanism of hard roof of working face adjacent to goaf after hydraulic fracturing and application.

To solve the unclear energy evolution mechanism and uncertain fracturing effects in hydraulic fracturing of coal seams adjacent to goafs, this study explored hydraulic fracturing's influence on roof energy release via theoretical analysis, proposed the optimal fracturing location to mitigate inter-roof energy transfer, and clarified fractures' regulatory effects on key strata through particle flow numerical simulation. Combined with field tests, it revealed the fractured roof energy evolution law: key stratum movement triggers energy release, and hydraulic fracturing promotes the phased subsid

The light side of mast cell degranulation: delivering macrophage repair through molecular condensates.

Mast cell (MC) degranulation is commonly viewed as the rapid release of preformed inflammatory mediators into the extracellular environment. In a recent study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Salm et al. described a more spatially controlled form of MC communication following sterile peritoneal injury. Sensory neurons activated MCs through substance P signaling, promoting the release of extracellular granules that persisted as membraneless biomolecular condensates. These condensates, enriched in more than 200 proteins, remained associated with the surface of large peritoneal

Fast self-healing in a layered molecular crystal mediated by stress-induced symmetry breaking.

In recent years, symmetry-breaking has emerged as a powerful tool for significantly altering various physical properties in 2D layered materials. However, the breaking of symmetry by means of mechanical stress in organic crystals remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate a simple approach to engineer symmetry-breaking through mechanical stress fields in a layered molecular crystal, resulting in autonomous and fast self-healing under ambient temperature and pressure conditions. Fracture mechanics analysis reveals that the crystal adheres to an elasto-plastic model, with formation of a plastic zone

Spatial protein expression patterns across pathologically-associated fibers revealed molecular specialization in inclusion body myositis.

OBJECTIVES: In Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM), myofibers undergo structural and functional changes, including increased regeneration, atrophy, and fibrosis. The molecular mechanisms driving pathologically -associated fibers (PAF) remain poorly understood. METHODS: We developed a myofiber-level proteomic workflow to identify protein signatures of three PAF subtypes. Laser-capture microdissection mass spectrometry of immunolabeled cryosections was performed, complemented by immunofluorescence and electron microscopy validation. RESULTS: Regenerating fibers expressing embryonic myosin heavy chain

HIF2α-induced lysyl oxidase safeguards successful pregnancy by remodelling collagens at the feto-maternal interface.

During the initial stage of gestation, precise constructions of the microenvironment at the feto-maternal interface are critical for successful embryonic development to term. It consists of the fetal placenta and the maternal decidua, contributing to favorable pregnancy outcomes and long-term health in both mother and child. Remarkably, although our previous work demonstrated that physiological uterine hypoxia promotes blastocyst implantation into the decidua basalis and onset of trophoblastic invasion via the hypoxia-inducible factor (Hif) signaling pathway, it remains unclear which key regul
