Facial thirds-based evaluation of facial asymmetry using stereophotogrammetric devices: Application to facial palsy subjects.

Many conditions can compromise facial symmetry, resulting in an impairment of the affected person from both esthetic and functional points of view. For these reasons, a detailed, focused, and objective evaluation of facial asymmetry is needed, both for surgical planning and for treatment evaluation. In this study, we present a new quantitative method to assess symmetry in different facial thirds, objectively defined on the territories of distribution of trigeminal branches. A total of 70 subjects (40 healthy controls and 30 patients with unilateral facial palsy) participated. A stereophotogram

Haemodialysis catheters in the intensive care unit.

Ten to 15% of critically ill patients need renal replacement therapy (RRT) for severe acute kidney injury. The dialysis catheter is critical for RRT quality and efficiency. Catheters have several properties that must be optimized to promote RRT success. The distal tip has to be located in a high blood flow location, which means central venous territory. Therefore, catheters are mostly inserted into the right internal jugular vein or in femoral veins. External diameter should vary from 12 to 16 Fr in order to ensure adequate blood flow inside the catheter. Lumen shapes are theoretically designe

Implantation of a Novel Allogeneic Mesenchymal Precursor Cell Type in Patients with Ischemic Cardiomyopathy Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: an Open Label Phase IIa Trial.

Heart failure is a life-limiting condition affecting over 40 million patients worldwide. Ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) is the most common cause. This study investigates in situ cardiac regeneration utilizing precision delivery of a novel mesenchymal precursor cell type (iMP) during coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy (LVEF < 40 %). The phase IIa safety study was designed to enroll 11 patients. Preoperative scintigraphy imaging (SPECT) was used to identify hibernating myocardium not suitable for conventional myocardial revascularization for iMP implant

Epidemiology of fibromuscular dysplasia: A review of the literature.

Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) is a non-atherosclerotic, non-inflammatory disease of medium sized arteries that has been described in multiple anatomic territories with a wide variety of manifestations (e.g. beading, stenosis, occlusion, aneurysm, or dissection). While the first case of FMD is thought to have been described over 75 years ago, the causes, natural history, and epidemiology of FMD in the general population remain incompletely understood. This article reviews important historical and contemporary contributions to the FMD literature that inform our current understanding of the preva

[Scientific substantiation of sizes of sanitary protection zones of anthrax burial sites based on the comprehensive evaluation of risk factors].

In the Russian Federation anthrax epizootics are still being registered among animals as well as epidemic foci of the population. This situation is linked to natural reservoirs of the pathogen - numerous anthrax burial sites which belong to class I of dangerous objects. In this connection, a one-kilometer sanitary protective zone is required according to current Russian Federation legislation. As a result, a significant land of the country is unsuitable for any agricultural use. Meanwhile, epizootologo-epidemiological observations indicate to that different anthrax burial sites differ in their

Comparing maternal genetic variation across two millennia reveals the demographic history of an ancient human population in southwest Turkey.

More than two decades of archaeological research at the site of Sagalassos, in southwest Turkey, resulted in the study of the former urban settlement in all its features. Originally settled in late Classical/early Hellenistic times, possibly from the later fifth century BCE onwards, the city of Sagalassos and its surrounding territory saw empires come and go. The Plague of Justinian in the sixth century CE, which is considered to have caused the death of up to a third of the population in Anatolia, and an earthquake in the seventh century CE, which is attested to have devastated many monuments

Cerebral Angiography Can Demonstrate Changes in Collateral Flow During Induced Hypertension.

A 52-year-old woman with a large left-hemispheric stroke was transferred to our hospital for possible endovascular treatment. The patient underwent a cerebral angiogram at 7 hours after symptom onset with intent to treat and was found to have occlusion of the proximal M1-segment of the left middle cerebral artery (MCA). At that time it was felt that this was a high-risk patient for mechanical clot retrieval and it was decided to treat her with induced hypertension. The diagnostic catheter was left in place in the left internal carotid artery (ICA) and hypertension was induced in the angiograph

A Case of Apoplexy of Rathke's Cleft Cyst Followed by Cerebral Infarction.

Rathke's cleft cyst (RCC) apoplexy is a rare clinical entity. We report a case of apoplexy of an RCC followed by cerebral infarction. A 67-year-old woman was found lying on the street unconscious. She had fallen from her motorbike. On referral to our hospital she gradually regained consciousness and presented with no neurological deficits. CT showed a round and slightly hyperdense area in the suprasellar region. However, the attending physician did not find this abnormal finding on CT and the patient was discharged the same day. Thirteen days after the first emergency visit she developed left

Nurturing the citizens of the future: milk stations and child nutrition in Puerto Rico, 1929-60.

Between the 1930s and 1960s Puerto Rico was transformed from a marginal United States territory into an industrialised 'showcase of development'. This article investigates the organisation of milk station programmes on the island during this crucial period and how these reflected the circulation of child welfare knowledge, nutrition expertise and public health practices. During the Depression, these perspectives fostered a recast of the eugenic regeneration ideologies motivating medical assessments of and sanitary interventions with Puerto Rico's rural poor since the nineteenth century. Evolution of bright colours in animals: worlds of prohibition and oblivion.

Because the ability to hide in plain sight provides a major selective advantage to both prey and predator species, the emergence of the striking colouration of some animal species (such as many coral reef fish) represents an evolutionary conundrum that remains unsolved to date. Here I propose a framework by which conspicuous colours can emerge when the selective pressures for camouflage are relaxed (1) because camouflage is not essential under specific prey/predator conditions or (2) due to the impossibility of reducing the signal-to-background noise in the environment. The first case is found

Cost attributable to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder in the Canadian correctional system.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading identifiable cause of intellectual disability in the Western world and may result in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Individuals with FASD have a higher risk of being involved in the legal system, either as offenders or as victims. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to estimate the direct cost for youths (12-17 years old) and adults (18+ years old) with FASD to the Canadian correctional system in 2011/2012. The prevalence of FASD in the Canadian correctional system, obtained from the current epidemiological literature, was applied to th

MLVA as an Epidemiological Tool To Trace Back Brucella melitensis Biovar 1 Re-Emergence in Italy.

Brucellosis is an important zoonosis caused by Brucella spp., still prevalent in most areas of the world. Brucellosis control in animals is the key to protect humans. The knowledge of Brucella spp. prevailing genotypes in a territory represents an important epidemiological tool to formulate policies and strategies for disease control and to trace back the introduction of new strains previously considered as exotic. In the last years, multiple-locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) has been proposed as complementary to classical biotyping methods. MLVA may add important information

Anatomy, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry of the olfactory subsystems in mice.

The four regions of the murine nasal cavity featuring olfactory neurons were studied anatomically and by labeling with lectins and relevant antibodies with a view to establishing criteria for the identification of olfactory subsystems that are readily applicable to other mammals. In the main olfactory epithelium and the septal organ the olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) are embedded in quasi-stratified columnar epithelium; vomeronasal OSNs are embedded in epithelium lining the medial interior wall of the vomeronasal duct and do not make contact with the mucosa of the main nasal cavity; and in G

Ischemic and postischemic conditioning of the myocardium in clinical practice: challenges, expectations and obstacles.

Conditioning refers to endogenous mechanisms rendering the myocardium more tolerant against reperfusion injury. Application of brief ischemia-reperfusion cycles prior to the index ischemia has a beneficial effect and limits the infarct size. This is called preconditioning and is mainly mediated by activation of adenosine, bradykinin, opioid and other receptors, with subsequent activation of intracellular mediators leading to mitochondrial protection. A clinical equivalent of preconditioning is preinfarction angina. Benefits for the ischemic and reperfused myocardium are also provided by repeti

Endoscopic endonasal approach for the treatment of schwannomas of the pterygopalatine fossa: case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) schwannomas are rare lesions most often arising from branches of the trigeminal nerve. Symptomatic lesions have been traditionally treated by conventional external approaches. However, the development of an expanded endonasal approach (EEA) enables skull base surgeons to reach these deeply seated lesions via a different route with its own advantages and drawbacks. METHODS: Case report and review of the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 41-year-old woman presented with a 6-year history of right facial pain and numbness. Her symptoms had increased progre

Efficacy of a recombinant Rift Valley fever virus MP-12 with NSm deletion as a vaccine candidate in sheep.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), a mosquito-borne virus in the Bunyaviridae family and Phlebovirus genus, causes RVF, a disease of ruminants and man, endemic in Sub-Saharan African countries. However, outbreaks in Yemen and Saudi Arabia demonstrate the ability for RVFV to spread into virgin territory and thus the need exists to develop safe and efficacious vaccines that can be used outside the endemic zones. Commercial RVFV vaccines are available but have limitations that prevent their use in disease-free countries. Consequently, there are ongoing efforts to develop and/or improve RVFV vaccines
