Expression of sialic acids and other nonulosonic acids in Leptospira.

BACKGROUND: Sialic acids are negatively charged nine carbon backbone sugars expressed on mammalian cell surfaces. Sialic acids are part of a larger family of nonulosonic acid (NulO) molecules that includes pseudaminic and legionaminic acids. Microbial expression of sialic acids and other nonulosonic acids has been shown to contribute to host-microbe interactions in a variety of contexts, including participation in colonization, immune subversion, and behaviors such as biofilm formation, autoagglutination and motility. Previous research has suggested that some spirochetes may also express these

Predicting Supramolecular Self-Assembly of Peptide Structures with AlphaFold3.

Self-assembled peptide-based nanostructures have diverse applications in the pharmaceutical and materials fields, but accurately predicting their self-assembly behavior without time-intensive organic synthesis and characterization remains a significant challenge. Here, we assess the effectiveness of AlphaFold3 (AF3), a deep learning model for protein structure prediction, in modeling peptide-based nanostructures and the interactions driving supramolecular self-assembly. We designed amphiphilic peptides composed of alternating hydrophobic residues (valine, leucine, isoleucine, phenylalanine) an

AIlessphobia, AI-supported self-regulated learning, and academic self-efficacy in nursing students: A structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are increasingly integrated into higher education and influence students' learning behaviors. Although AI tools can support learning processes, excessive reliance on them may lead to AIlessphobia, defined as anxiety about completing academic tasks without AI support. Understanding how this emerging psychological factor relates to students' self-regulated learning and academic self-efficacy is particularly important in nursing education. AIM: This study aimed to examine the relationships between AIlessphobia, AI-enhanced self-regulated lear

A controlled trial examining large Language model conformity in psychiatric assessment using the Asch paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Despite significant advances in AI-driven medical diagnostics, the integration of large language models (LLMs) into psychiatric practice presents unique challenges. While LLMs demonstrate high accuracy in controlled settings, their performance in collaborative clinical environments remains unclear. This study examined whether LLMs exhibit conformity behavior under social pressure across different diagnostic certainty levels, with a particular focus on psychiatric assessment. METHODS: Using an adapted Asch paradigm, we conducted a controlled trial examining GPT-4o's performance acr

The proof is in the pudding: patient engagement in studying cannabidiol in mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Patient engagement (PE) in clinical trials has gained importance yet remains uncommon, particularly in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a critical precursor to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cannabidiol (CBD) shows potential in slowing MCI progression due to its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. In CBD research, PE is underutilized too. To design a study on CBD for MCI, we administered an online survey to individuals with MCI to better understand their preferences for trial setup and outcomes. METHODS: We asked 209 individuals with MCI to complete an onlin

Birth choices after caesarean in Taiwan: A mixed methods pilot study of a decision aid for shared decision making.

BACKGROUND: Taiwan has a high national caesarean rate coupled with a low vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC) rate. Studies suggest that women do not receive sufficient information about birth choices after caesarean in Taiwan and shared decision making (SDM) is not an expectation. This pilot study aimed to test the feasibility of using a birth choices decision aid to improve women's opportunity for engagement in SDM about birth after cesarean. METHODS: A two-phase sequential mixed methods pilot study was conducted in a regional hospital in northern Taiwan. Phase I involved a randomized pre-t

A Heartbeat Away From Consciousness: Heart Rate Variability Entropy Can Discriminate Disorders of Consciousness and Is Correlated With Resting-State fMRI Brain Connectivity of the Central Autonomic Network.

Background: Disorders of consciousness are challenging to diagnose, with inconsistent behavioral responses, motor and cognitive disabilities, leading to approximately 40% misdiagnoses. Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the complexity of the heart-brain two-way dynamic interactions. HRV entropy analysis quantifies the unpredictability and complexity of the heart rate beats intervals. We here investigate the complexity index (CI), a score of HRV complexity by aggregating the non-linear multi-scale entropies over a range of time scales, and its discriminative power in chronic patients with un

Selective Deletion of Sodium Salt Taste during Development Leads to Expanded Terminal Fields of Gustatory Nerves in the Adult Mouse Nucleus of the Solitary Tract.

UNLABELLED: Neuronal activity plays a key role in the development of sensory circuits in the mammalian brain. In the gustatory system, experimental manipulations now exist, through genetic manipulations of specific taste transduction processes, to examine how specific taste qualities (i.e., basic tastes) impact the functional and structural development of gustatory circuits. Here, we used a mouse knock-out model in which the transduction component used to discriminate sodium salts from other taste stimuli was deleted in taste bud cells throughout development. We used this model to test the hyp

[Early intervention in bipolar affective disorders: Why, when and how].

OBJECTIVES: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and severe psychiatric disease. There are often significant delays prior to diagnosis, and only 30 to 40 % of patients will experience complete remission. Since BD occurs most often at a young age, the disorder can seriously obstruct future socio-professional development and integration. Vulnerability-stress model of BD is considered to be the result of an interaction between vulnerability genes and environmental risk factors, which leads to the onset of the disorder most often in late adolescence or early adulthood. The clinical "staging" model o

Evaluating the clinical safety of large language models in oral cancer-related patient communication: a repeated-prompt observational study.

BACKGROUND: As patients increasingly consult large language models (LLMs) for health-related information, evaluating the clinical safety of AI-generated responses has become essential, particularly in high-risk domains such as oral oncology. Despite growing interest in AI applications in medicine, evidence regarding response consistency and referral safety in patient communication remains limited. This study aimed to assess the clinical safety of two contemporary LLMs in oral cancer-related patient scenarios using a multidimensional evaluation framework. METHODS: This repeated-prompt observat

Urban traffic dynamics and their impact on CO₂ emissions and temperature: a three-year GNSS-based study during the COVID-19 pandemic in Jakarta.

BACKGROUND AND METHOD: Urban traffic and air pollution remain strongly interconnected challenges for big cities. In Jakarta, transportation activity remains one of the primary contributors to carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and urban heat stress, worsened by high-density land use and limited integration of public transportation. The COVID-19 pandemic temporarily transformed these dynamics through the policy of social mobility restriction; this study therefore aims to assess how changes in traffic volume affect CO₂ intensity and thermal level across different traffic policy and behavioral contex
