Ameloblastic Fibro-Odontoma.

The ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, mixed odontogenic tumor exhibiting the histological characters of the ameloblastic fibroma and complex odontoma. It is comprised of proliferating ectodermal and mesenchymal components of odontogenic tissue as well as enamel and dentin. AFO normally presents as an asymptomatic swelling of the posterior maxilla or mandible and is usually associated with developing teeth, occurring predominantly in children and adolescents. Such lesions are generally found upon radiographic examination of patients whose tooth eruption is delayed. This lesion often

Caries, Periodontal Disease, Supernumerary Teeth and Other Dental Disorders in Swedish Wild Boar (Sus scrofa).

Between January and December 2013, the dental and periodontal health of 99 Swedish wild boars (Sus scrofa) was investigated. Sampling occurred in conjunction with routine hunting at six large estates in the southern and middle parts of Sweden. All six of the estates use supplemental feeding. The weight of the animals, their sex and their dates of death were noted. Age was estimated using tooth eruption and tooth replacement patterns. The oral cavity was inspected and abnormalities were recorded on a dental chart modified for wild boars. The findings included supernumerary teeth, absence of tee

The autotransplantation and orthodontic treatment of multiple congenitally missing and impacted teeth.

Congenitally missing teeth are one of the most common dental anomalies. When permanent teeth are absent, various problems can occur It is important to consider the facial profile, position of the incisor teeth, skeletal and dental development, and available dental space before planning treatment. Possible treatment methods include preserving and retaining the deciduous tooth, replacing the missing tooth with prosthesis, placing an implant, or performing a transplant after extracting the deciduous tooth. Among these possibilities, autotransplantation combined with orthodontic treatment corrects

Dentigerous cyst associated with multiple mesiodens: a case report.

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. When observed with erupted and complete dentition the diagnosis is a surprise; as about 95% of dentigerous cysts involve the permanent dentition and only 5% are associated with supernumerary teeth. The usual age of clinical presentation of dentigerous cyst due to supernumerary tooth is during the first four decades. Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth situated between the maxillary central incisors. More frequently

Simultaneous presence of a congenitally missing premolar and supernumerary incisor in the same jaw: report of case.

Supernumerary teeth and hypodontia can be regarded as opposite developmental phenomena. An eight-year-old girl presented a concomitant occurrence of a supernumerary tooth and two congenitally missing teeth. The supernumerary tooth was found in the left maxillary incisor region, while the left second premolar in the maxilla and the left lateral incisor in the mandible were congenitally missing. The supernumerary tooth showed a similar color and morphology to those of the maxilla lateral incisor, and the lateral incisor on the mesial side was diagnosed as a supernumerary tooth from dental age, e

The follicular primordial cyst - odontogenic keratocyst.

Primordial cysts are often associated with unerupted teeth. Superimposition may result in a 'dentigerous cyst' appearance radiographically. There is usually no direct connection between the cyst lining and the follicle of the unerupted tooth. These have been termed envelopmental primordial cysts. In some instances, however, the primordial cyst actually surrounds the crown and the cyst lining is attached to the neck of the tooth in a true dentigerous relationship. We have called these lesions follicular primordial cysts. That portion of the lining immediately adjacent to the neck of the tooth c

Periodontal-orthodontic interdisciplinary management of a "periodontally hopeless" maxillary central incisor with severe mobility: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Treating periodontally hopeless teeth with advanced bone resorption and severe tooth mobility is a great challenge for both orthodontists and periodontists. Biofilm-induced periodontal inflammation and occlusal trauma-related inflammation may synergistically aggravate tooth mobility. This case report illustrates that even periodontally hopeless teeth can be saved and have long-term stability with comprehensive periodontal treatment to control periodontal inflammation and promote periodontal bone regeneration and intricate orthodontic mechanical control to correct cross bite and occ

Dental phenotype in Crouzon syndrome: A controlled radiographic study in 22 patients.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective radiographic controlled study investigates the dental phenotype in patients with Crouzon syndrome to determine if differences are observed as suggested by the FGFR2C342Y/+ Crouzon mouse models, and whether these models could be of interest to study the role of this mutation in tooth development. DESIGN: We assessed dental phenotype using dedicated linear measurements in 22 children with Crouzon syndrome and compared tooth morphology in both primary and permanent dentitions to an age-matched control group. Descriptive statistics were performed with "Sex" and "Age"

Erosion in children: an increasing clinical problem?

Tooth wear is becoming more common in both adults and children. The triad of attrition, abrasion and erosion has been known for many years, but the contribution of erosion (irreversible loss of dental hard tissue due to a chemical process not involving bacteria, or the loss of tooth surface not directly associated with mechanical or traumatic factors or caries) to excessive loss of tooth tissue is now being emphasized. The authors of this paper examine the problem and suggest ways of overcoming it.

Long-term Stability of Autotransplanted Premolars as a Substitute for Molars in Adults.

Autotransplantation is a viable treatment option for tooth replacement when a suitable donor tooth is available. This case report presents 2 cases that describe successful treatment outcome and prognosis after autotransplantation of a mature premolar as a missing molar. The first premolar was extracted for orthodontic purposes and transplanted to the missing first molar site in the mandible. The transplanted tooth was monitored up to 7 years. The transplant was functional and maintained a normal bone level throughout the follow-up period. Clinical examination showed normal physiologic movement

Transposition of mandibular lateral incisor-canine (mn.i2.C) associated with hypodontia: a review and rare clinical case.

Transposition is a unique and extreme form of ectopic eruption in which a permanent tooth develops and erupts in the position which is normally occupied by other permanent teeth. Tooth transpositions are rare and they can be complete or incomplete. The aetiology of transposition is still obscure. Various populations have been studied, to determine the prevalence of tooth transpositions. 20% of the transpositions which occur on the maxillary arch involve the canine and the lateral incisor. Although they are rare, transpositions may involve the maxillary lateral and central incisors. Among all t

Immediate implant placement following minimally invasive extraction: a case report with a 6-year follow-up.

Single tooth replacement with a dental implant has become an increasingly favored treatment option in the anterior maxilla; however, bone resorption following maxillary anterior tooth extraction is very common and often compromises gingival tissue for the implant restoration. Achieving predictable peri-implant esthetics requires a proper understanding and preservation of the osseous and gingival tissue surrounding the failing tooth. Therefore, the key to maintaining the interproximal papillae is to preserve the osseous support with minimally invasive extraction. An immediate implant insertion

Intrusive luxation in primary teeth - Review of literature and report of a case.

Luxation injuries such as intrusion are commonly seen in the primary dentition. Intrusion drives the tooth deeper into the alveolar socket, which results in damage to the pulp and peridontium. Difficulty in gaining compliance from a very young child and the risk of damaging the permanent tooth germ makes the management of these injuries challenging. Careful clinical and radiographic examination along with regular follow-up is essential. A case of intrusive luxation to the maxillary central incisor in a 3-year-old patient is reported. Spontaneous reeruption was noted 4 months after injury, but

Treatment of an avulsed maxillary permanent central incisor replaced by autotransplantation of a mandibular premolar: 14-year follow-up.

AIM: To present the 14 year follow-up of a case in which an avulsed permanent maxillary central incisor was replaced by autotransplantation of a mandibular premolar. SUMMARY: A mandibular premolar (Moorrees' stage 3) was transplanted into the space left by an avulsed permanent maxillary central incisor after a delay of 3 months. Recall examination 14 years after transplantation revealed a normal periodontal architecture with absence of infection, ankylosis or progressive resorption. The transplantation of a premolar is seen as a promising method to replace a lost permanent tooth and to restor

Revisiting the supernumerary: the epidemiological and molecular basis of extra teeth.

Supernumerary teeth are a common clinical and radiographic finding and may produce occlusal and dental problems. The aetiological basis of extra teeth is poorly understood in human populations; however, the mouse provides a useful model system to investigate the complex genetics of tooth development. This article describes recent advances in our understanding of the genetic basis of supernumerary teeth. We have reviewed biological evidence that provides insight into why supernumerary tooth formation may occur. Indeed, many of the molecular signalling pathways known to be involved in normal dev

Orthodontic treatment for an unerupted and severely rotated maxillary central incisor. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Many reports have indicated the treatment for permanent teeth with disturbed eruption due to the presence of supernumerary teeth. However, successful treatment for an unerupted maxillary incisor with severe rotation and another maxillary incisor with disturbed eruption by a supernumerary tooth is quite rare. CASE REPORT: We treated a 7-year-old Japanese male with an unerupted and severely rotated maxillary right incisor, along with a maxillary left incisor due to interference with eruption by an inverted supernumerary tooth. Orthodontic treatment using surgical exposure, traction

Postnatal lower jaw dentition in different phenotypes of tabby mice.

The tabby (Ta) syndrome in mouse is homologous to human anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, including defective development of hair, teeth, and glands. To complete the available data on the functional dentition in the Ta mice, we analyzed the mandibular cheek teeth in 261 postnatal specimens arranged in several phenotype/genotype groups: 51 Ta-hemizygous males, 56 Ta-homo/hemizygous females, 64 Ta-heterozygous females, and 40 and 50 wild-type control males and females, respectively. We evaluated tooth number, size, shape and eruption and compared these parameters in the different groups. In any i
