Presence and quantification of mast cells in the gingiva of cats with tooth resorption, periodontitis and chronic stomatitis.

OBJECTIVE: Mast cells are tissue-dwelling granule-containing immune cells that play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of inflammation and other processes. The three most common orodental disorders in cats are periodontitis, feline resorptive lesions (FRL), and chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS). The presence and density of mast cells in the gingiva has been established in healthy cats but not in cats affected by FRL, FCGS or periodontitis. The aim of the present study was to document and quantify the presence of mast cells in the gingiva adjacent to teeth affected by FRL, FCGS or chronic period

Significant association between tooth extrusion and tooth resorption in domestic cats.

Abnormal extrusion of canine teeth is often noted in middle-aged and geriatric domestic cats. The same age group of cats also is commonly affected by tooth resorption (TR). This study explored the relationship between these two phenomena of unknown etiology. Using digital radiography, the distance between the alveolar margin (AM) and cementoenamel junction (CEJ), referred to as the AM-CEJ distance, was measured in clinically and radiographically healthy maxillary canine teeth of 24 TR-affected and 29 TR-free cats. The mean AM-CEJ distance of maxillary canine teeth of cats with and cats without

[Proceeding with patients having mental impairment and those affected by congenital development anomalies during orthodontic treatment].

The aim of the work was to describe the specificity of proceeding with patients having mental impairment and those affected by congenital development anomalies during orthodontic treatment. At the same time, an attempt has been made at solving some problems concerning the treatment of patients with special needs. Based on available references three model syndromes of congenital development anomalies with coexisting mental impairment have been described: Down, Lejeune and Williams syndromes. It results from the descriptions and discussions included in this work that the possibilities of optimal

Familial keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans associated with woolly hair.

Keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (KFSD) is a rare inherited disorder of keratinization clinically characterized by diffuse follicular hyperkeratosis, progressive scarring alopecia of scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes, corneal dystrophy and photophobia. Woolly hair is a hereditary condition, transmitted as an autosomal dominant or recessive trait, usually seen in Caucasians at birth or shortly after, in which there are curly, thick, often heavily pigmented hairs. We report two cases, a son and his mother, in whom KFSD occurred in association with woolly hair. In addition, various dental a

[An unusual skin disorder after tooth extraction].

A 72-year-old woman was referred to a department of oral and maxillofacial surgery because of a unilateral skin eruption of the face after extraction of the right first upper molar, a few days earlier. She had been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia some years before. It appeared to be herpes zoster or'shingles'from the second branch of the trigeminal nerve. Treatment included hospital admission with intravenous antiviral therapy and analgetics. Herpes zoster of the face is a severe infection and requires early treatment. Post herpetic neuralgia is a serious complication of herpes zo

[Resorption of two upper incisors in a 14-year-old boy].

A 14-year-old boy was referred because of a slight swelling of the alveolar mucosa of the right central and lateral maxillary incisor. Radiographically, a well-circumscribed radiolucency was seen between the vital, but partially resorbed roots of the two incisors. Treatment consisted of careful enucleation, including removal of the two teeth. Histopathological examination showed a central giant-cell granuloma. Healing was uneventful. Additional examination for the presence of hyperparathyroidism was negative. During one year follow-up, no signs of recurrence have been noticed.

Spontaneous eruption of an occult incisor fragment from the lip after eight months: report of a case.

Large majorities of dental traumas are associated with soft-tissue injury and tooth fragments. They are often found embedded in the oral soft tissues, most commonly the lip. Early detection and complete removal of such fragments is critical in order to prevent infection and scarring. Adequate communication between medical and dental professionals involved is of considerable value in the management of such cases. This report presents a case of spontaneous extrusion of an occult incisor fragment from the lower lip, eight months after trauma.

[Initial results using extracorporeal low energy shockwave therapy ESWT in muscle reflex-induced lock jaw].

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic reflex-mediated temporomandibular joint (TMJ) locking is one of the complications frequently observed after sophisticated and long dentoalveolar operations. Its severity can be up to 90%. Usually, therapy consists of mouth-opening exercises using tongue depressors. In difficult cases, the treatment regularly extends for weeks, often with only moderate improvement of this painful limitation. USE OF ESWT: In three cases, it was shown that supportive treatment utilizing low-energy shock waves (ESWT) is significantly effective in the therapy of limited opening of the mo

Evaluation of efficacy of Sofscale. A clinical and SEM study.

Efficacy of Sofscale in the case of removal of calculus from the root surface as claimed by manufacturers was evaluated in the present study. 32 patients suffering from chronic periodontitis, having calculus deposits in the lower incisors were selected for the study. A double blind study was conducted to evaluate the ease with which calculus could be removed. In the second part of study, a SEM study of the root surface subjected to root planing alone and root planing after application of Sofscale was done to see whether any remnants of calculus was left behind. In the double blind study conduc

[Prevalence of dental erosion caused by sulfuric acid fumes in a smelter in Japan].

The effect of occupational sulfuric acid exposure and other factors on teeth was explored in a cross-sectional study with blind dental examinations. Among 350 male workers in a copper-smelter in Japan, 28 had mild dental erosion with silky-glazed opaque appearance of the enamel and/or shallow concavities on the enamel. While opaqueness was observed in 20 and concavities found in 11 workers, only 3 had both signs, suggesting that the concave lesions were often accompanied with enough remineralization to keep the dental surface gloss, possibly due to acid exposure at a low level. The cases had a

Heterotopic polyodontia in a cynomolgus monkey.

A case of heterotopic polyodontia was detected in a 6-year-old male laboratory cynomolgus monkey. A heterotopic tooth had erupted through the right maxillofacial area at the side of the nose, with a crustated surface. Macroscopically, the tooth was not connected with the right parotid. Radiography and histopathology of the transverse section of the lesion showed almost normal propriodentium containing alveolar bone and partial continuity with the maxillary bone. We believe this is the first case description of heterotopic polyodontia in a monkey.

[Midmotoraxonal reexcitation observed in a patient with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) type IA].

We report a unique late motor unit potential observed in a patient with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN) type IA. The characteristics of the potential were as follows; (1) constant appearance with more than 20 mA of the stimuli, without disappearance with supramaximal stimuli, (2) constant wave-form and amplitude, (3) shorter latency with more proximal stimulation (indirect pathway), (4) remarkable fluctuation of the latency, and (5) disappearance with paired stimuli. The characteristics (1)-(3) correspond to Tomasulo's "peripheral late wave". But our late potential had fluctuati

Dental abnormalities and early diagnosis of hyperphosphatasemia.

Dental hard tissue abnormalities have never been described as part of the symptoms associated with hyperphosphatasemia. Fourteen teeth obtained from a young man, who had a mild form of hyperphosphatasemia, were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. SEM revealed a thin enamel, presenting a prismatic structure with many pits, and atypical cementum and dentin showing numerous resorption areas. The X-ray diffractograms revealed poorly crystalline hydroxyapatite associated with alpha-trical

[Sensory nerve conduction velocity determined by somatosensory evoked potentials in patients with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type I].

We evaluated sensory nerve conduction velocity (SCV) determined by somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) components in 2 cases of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy whose sensory nerve action potentials (SNAPs) were not evoked. SEPs elicited by median or ulnar nerve stimulation at the wrist or elbow were recorded from 5 scalp electrodes with ear reference. In both cases, no parietal N20 or frontal P20 component was identified, but a clear parietal P27 component was noted. The onset latency of the P27 component elicited by wrist or elbow stimulation was identified as the point where the s

Mineralized tissue-formation in periodontal wound healing.

The purpose of the present study was to examine and compare the different mineralized tissues that are found on and around the dental root following treatment of different periodontal pathosis. The material has been compiled from previously published experimental studies on periodontal therapies and trauma treatments. 4 distinctly different appearances of the mineralized tissue layers on the marginal dentin surfaces were described; new cementum, non-attached bone-like tissue, partly attached bone-like tissue and ankylosis preceded by root resorption. It was concluded that, healing in the perio
