Ebstein's anomaly is a congenital disorder characterized by apical displacement of the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve. Ebstein's anomaly may be seen in association with other cardiac conditions, including patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defect, and left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC). LVNC is characterized by increased trabeculation within the left ventricular apex. Echocardiography is often used to diagnose LVNC; however, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging offers superior characterization of the myocardium. We report a case of sudden cardiac death in a patient with Ebstein's anomaly

Echocardiography of a 60 year-old woman with a three-year history of heart murmur revealed a coronary artery fistula. Coronary angiography indicated right coronary artery ectasia and fistula. The pulmonary-to-systemic blood flow ratio was 1.4, and left-to-right shunt, 29%. On follow-up, infective endocarditis of the tricuspid valve had developed and was treated using antibiotics. The right coronary artery was dilated along its length and was saccular at the distal aspect. At this point, a fistula also connected by the left anterior descending and left circumflex arteries drained into the right

Effective screening for major aneuploidies can be provided in the first trimester of pregnancy. Screening by a combination of fetal nuchal translucency and maternal serum free-β-human chorionic gonadotrophin and pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A can identify about 90% of fetuses with trisomy 21 and other major aneuploidies for a false-positive rate of 5%. Improvement in the performance of first-trimester screening can be achieved by firstly, inclusion in the ultrasound examination assessment of the nasal bone and flow in the ductus venosus, hepatic artery and across the tricuspid valve, an

12 hearts with Ebstein's anomaly were studied. This disease is a combined anomaly of heart formation with dysplasia of the folds of the tricuspid valve (TV), its tendinous chordas and papillary muscles, dysplasia of the trabecular part of the right ventricle and dysplastic interrelationships between TV and the right ventricle: attachment by short chordas of posterior and septal folds of TV with the right ventricle walls, anomalous distal attachment of the anterior fold of TV. "Atrialisation" of the right ventricle is the reflection of the folds dysplasia the extreme form of which is the loss o

In order to prevent disadvantage of pulmonary regurgitation (PR) on cardiac function, pulmonary annuloplasty (PAP) was performed in a 58-year-old female. She suffered from severe mitral stenosis with right heart failure, and was in a state of cardiac cachexia. She was associated with PR due to pulmonary annular dilatation secondary to severe pulmonary hypertension. She underwent mitral valve replacement, tricuspid annuloplasty and PAP around the pulmonary annulus using a Teflon tape. No PR was observed by postoperative angiograms, and the operative method was proved to be effective on the trea

In nine critically ill neonates with persistent fetal circulation, femoral venous catheters were inserted at the bedside to initiate treatment and provide venous access. After femoral vein puncture or cutdown, a 5-F sheath was placed in the inferior vena cava through the femoral vein. With use of two-dimensional echocardiographic guidance, a 5-F balloon angiographic catheter was advanced through the inferior vena cava into the right atrium and subsequently manipulated through the tricuspid valve and into the main pulmonary artery. No major complications were attributable to the procedure. When

Of 10 patients with typical Sotos sequence, 5 had various congenital heart defects. They included 2 patients with secundum atrial septal defect, and one patient each with patent ductus arteriosus with mitral valve regurgitation, tricuspid atresia plus pulmonary atresia, and ventricular septal defect. Increases of head circumference and weight gain were less accelerated in the patients with congenital heart defects than in those without heart defects, while growth in length was comparable between the 2 groups. In view of these findings, it is suggested that the rate of congenital heart defects

A cardiac fibrosarcoma involving the right ventricular free wall, the interatrial septum, and proximal portion of the interventricular septum, with a 2-cm diameter protrusion into the right atrial lumen, was found at necropsy of a 2-year-old Miniature Schnauzer. Severe distortion of the tricuspid valve and narrowing of the aortic and pulmonic outflow tracts had caused the dog to develop right-sided cardiac failure and to have syncopal episodes. A tentative antemortem diagnosis of congenital pulmonic stenosis had been made on the basis of results of physical examination and diagnostic work-up.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the endocardial surface of the heart, with Staphylococcus aureus as the leading cause in the United States. Identified risk factors include advanced age, male sex, intravenous drug use (IVDU), prior IE, structural or valvular heart disease, HIV infection, and chronic hemodialysis. In IVDU, IE most commonly affects the right-sided valves, while bivalvular involvement is uncommon but associated with more severe disease and increased risk of rapid deterioration. Multiple complications arise from IE, including variable vascular phenomena and systemic

INTRODUCTION: Double valve replacement (DVR) with a mechanical prosthesis is associated with a higher risk of mortality. We planned to study the survival rate, early and late mortality and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) in patients undergoing DVR for rheumatic heart disease, with various generations of prosthetic valves ranging from ball in cage to bileaflet prosthesis and tilting disc valves.
MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY: We followed up 277 patients with rheumatic heart disease who underwent DVR between August 1999 and November 2009, retrospectively, at Sree Chitra Tir

BACKGROUND: Severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is associated with poor prognosis, and guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) alone has limited efficacy. Transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER) has emerged as a promising therapeutic option, but its impact on clinical outcomes remains debated.
AIMS: Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of T-TEER compared to GDMT.
METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE and Cochrane Central were searched for clinical trials and observational studies through February 2025, for studies comparing the clinical outcomes of T-TEER to GDMT. The outcomes assessed were all-caus

BACKGROUND: The causes of valvular disease in China are complex, with a broad age distribution. For patients with early mechanical valve replacement, the quality of life is affected by postoperative anticoagulation-related complications. Since 2005, we have used bioprosthetic valves to provide more options for patients. In this study, we retrospectively analyzed the 14-year follow-up data of patients undergoing BalMedic bovine pericardial bioprosthetic valve replacement (manufacturer: Beijing Balance Medical Tech Co., Ltd.) to evaluate its intermediate- to long-term clinical effectiveness.

Staging based on extra-valvular cardiac damage is an intuitive approach to categorizing patients with aortic stenosis (AS) that is easily applied using widely available echocardiographic tools. As discussed in this review, it has been shown to be a powerful tool for risk stratification that complements conventional approaches. The original and most widely used framework identifies stage 0 when there is AS without additional cardiac damage; stage 1 when there is left ventricular damage (hypertrophy, systolic or diastolic dysfunction with evidence of elevated filling pressures); stage 2 when the

It is estimated that 15% of traffic accidents cause trauma to large vessels. In about 70%-95% of cases, aortic rupture took place in the distal ligament of the left subclavian artery, whereas in the remaining cases rupture occurred in the ascending aorta above the aortic valve. Trauma to the aortic sinus and coronary arteries is rarely found in traffic accident victims. Therefore, coronary artery trauma is often misdiagnosed as coronary atherosclerotic heart disease. The present case is a 42 years old male who survived from a traffic accident. He presented with aortic sinus and left coronary a

Nonatherosclerotic embolism is a rare cause (4%-7%) of coronary occlusion in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients, approximately half of which occur in inadequately anticoagulated patients with prosthetic valves. We report a rare case of a patient with severe rheumatic heart disease and 3 mechanical valves presenting with STEMI that was successfully managed by Fogarty maneuver thrombus extraction after failed thrombus aspiration and balloon angioplasty. A 56-year-old woman presented with an acute anterior STEMI and Killip class III heart failure. She had severe rheumatic

OBJECTIVE: To describe the macroscopic characteristics of chronic Chagas heart disease in autopsied elderly.
METHODS: The elderly studied were 60 or older. Twenty of them had chronic Chagas heart disease (CHD) and positive serology for the disease, and 14 had no heart disease (WHD) nor morphological changes suggestive of it and were serologically negative for Chagas disease.
RESULTS: The CHD elderly had cardiac weight greater than the WHD (385 +/- 141.1 vs 306.8 +/- 62.1g, respectively; p > 0.05), in addition to significantly higher heart weight-to-body weight ratio (0.71% [0.5-1.42%] vs 0.5

A technique for extensive resection of the infundibular septum through the superior transarterial approach is proposed. Infundibular septal resection facilitates intraventricular rerouting for anatomic correction of transposition of the great arteries with ventricular septal defect and double-outlet right ventricle. This technique also may be used to enlarge progressively obstructive but physiologically advantageous ventricular septal defects, for example, with tricuspid atresia. Through the superior transaortic or transpulmonary approach, the landmarks of the infundibular septum are the inter

BACKGROUND: The increasing number of patients with Ebstein anomaly (EA) surviving into adulthood implies improvements in the treatments for the complex lesion. We revisited the clinical outcomes of patients with EA to demonstrate their "real world" survival.
OBJECTIVES: To identify the survival and predictors of mortality in patients with EA who underwent medical or surgical management in the present era.
METHODS: All patients who had EA with atrioventricular concordance between 1994 and 2016 were retrospectively reviewed. Baseline characteristics, initial echocardiographic findings, treatme

The two major valve-sparing root replacement procedures, aortic valve reimplantation (reimplantation) and aortic root remodeling (remodeling), have advantages and disadvantages, which are reviewed herein. The main advantage of reimplantation is the resulting annular support, and the disadvantages are the unfavorable hemodynamics and relatively long procedure time. The main advantages of remodeling are the physiological hemodynamics and decreased procedure time, and the disadvantage is the lack of annular support. With technical advances and modifications, however, the differences between these
