24 hemiplegic patients completed patterned functional electrical stimulation (PFES) upon the afflicted arm and leg. The multichannel PFES program was mathematically derived from the EMG agonist/antagonist pattern recorded from each subject's unaffected limbs during a series of monitored, voluntary movements. The average improvement in volitional range of motion for the group's paralyzed limbs was 90% for the upper extremities and 69% for the lower extremities. For partially paralyzed limbs, there was an average increase in range of movement of 68% for the upper extremities and 26% for the lowe

Only a small number of cases of compartment syndrome in the upper arm has been reported in the literature. The authors have reviewed 14 patients with 14 cases of compartment syndrome treated at their institution from 1980 to 1988. In the majority of cases in this series, compartment syndrome was caused by blunt, high-energy trauma. There were 9 patients with multiple trauma, 7 of whom were motor cyclists, and fracture of the upper arm was present in most of these. In 5 patients scapulothoracic dissociation with disruption of the neurovascular bundle of the upper extremity concerned was present

Spinal epidural abscess caused by Brucella species is an uncommon but potentially devastating complication of osteoarticular brucellosis. Cervical involvement is exceedingly rare, and long-segment cervical brucellar epidural abscess presenting with tetraparesis represents an uncommonly described clinical scenario. A 42-year-old female presented with a two-week history of progressive tetraparesis. Neurological examination revealed MRC grade 3/5 weakness in the upper extremities and 4/5 in the lower extremities, with bilateral sensory disturbance and upper motor neuron signs, classified as ASIA

Background/Objectives: Predicting comprehensive patient characteristics is essential for optimal individualized rehabilitation plans for acute stroke patients. However, current models primarily predict single outcomes. This study aimed to assess the applicability of latent class analysis (LCA) in rehabilitation practice by identifying comprehensive characteristics and associated predictors in acute stroke patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study using the Japan Association of Rehabilitation Database, including 10,270 stroke patients admitted to 37 acute-care hospital

PURPOSE: Cervicothoracic ventral-dorsal rhizotomy (VDR) is a potential treatment of medically refractory hypertonia in patients who are not candidates for intrathecal baclofen, particularly in cases of severe upper limb hypertonia with limited to no function. A longitudinal cohort was identified to highlight our institutional safety and efficacy using cervicothoracic VDR for the treatment of hypertonia.
METHODS: Retrospective data analysis was performed for patients that underwent non-selective cervicothoracic VDR between 2022 and 2023. Non-modifiable risk factors, clinical variables, and ope

BACKGROUND: Autologous skin grafting has been the popular method for reconstructing post-burn defects. However, this technique has limitations such as high contracture rates and inadequate volume coverage. This report aims to propose the principles and advantages of utilizing microsurgically linked perforator flaps for the reconstruction of extensive burn defects and associated post-burn scar contracture in the lower and upper extremities and trunk.
METHOD: Patients who underwent free tissue transfer for primary and secondary burn wound reconstruction at a single institution between 2016 and

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The effects of conventional protocols of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in the chronic phase of stroke are limited. This study aimed to apply the sequential inhibitory and facilitatory rTMS for upper limb motor dysfunction post-stroke to observe the efficacy and explore the possible neurophysiological mechanism. We hypothesize that this protocol would both enhance the excitability of affected M1 and promote connections among motor areas.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We reported a 55-year-old female patient with a 1-year chronic stroke and right-sided hemipleg

Burn injury severity is currently determined by estimating the total body surface area (TBSA) burned, but this method fails to capture the severity of subsequent functional consequences. Alternatively, cutaneous functional units (CFUs)--skin segments that accommodate for movement and commonly become contracted--can be used to more accurately estimate burn severity based on functional consequences. Bilateral hands account for 81.3% of the body's CFUs, though only account for 5% of TBSA. However, hand burn survivors can have worse physical outcomes (ie, contractures, deformities) after burn inju

PURPOSE: Neuromuscular disorders are characterised by muscle weakness that limits upper extremity mobility, but can be alleviated with dynamic arm support devices. Current research highlights the importance and difficulties of evidence-based recommendations for device development. We aim to provide research recommendations primarily concerning upper extremity body functions, and secondarily activity and participation, environmental and personal factors.
METHODS: Evidence was synthesised from literature, ongoing studies, and expert opinions and tabulated within a framework based on a combinati

Essential tremor (ET) is a common tremor disorder affecting postural/action tremor of the upper extremities and midline. Recent research revealed a cerebellar-like deficit during tandem gait in persons with ET, though spatiotemporal variability during normal gait in ET has been relatively ignored. The first purpose of this study was to investigate gait variability magnitude and structure in ET as compared to healthy older adults (HOA). To address this issue, 11 ET and 11 age-matched HOAs walked on a treadmill for 5min at preferred walking speeds. HOAs walked for an additional minute while spee

OBJECTIVE: Lymphocutaneous fistulas with intractable lymphatic leakage represent a serious clinical condition leading to a severe impairment of quality of life for the affected patients. To date, no adequate diagnostic imaging modality is in existence to allow selection of the correct treatment option. The aim of this study was to perform a pre-therapeutic evaluation of the lymphatic system in patients with lymphocutaneous fistulas by magnetic resonance lymphangiography (MRL).
METHODS: Eight lower extremities in four patients with lymphocutaneous fistulas were examined by MRL. Three locations

BACKGROUND: The array of symptoms that characterize thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) often lead to a failure or delay in diagnosing this condition in persons who are physically active.
METHODS: Using the key words and phrases "thoracic outlet syndrome," "sport," "exercise," and "athlete," the MEDLINE files from 1991 to April 1996 were searched. Articles dating before 1991 were accessed by cross-referencing the more recent articles.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: TOS results from compression of the neural or vascular structures of the upper extremity at the thoracic outlet. Clinical manifestations ca
