Postpartum depression literacy among economically disadvantaged Indian working women: roles of health literacy and social determinants.

PURPOSE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious mental health concern with a high prevalence in India. For working women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, awareness of PPD symptoms and available support is essential for early detection and management. However, due to the social stigma associated with mental disorder, general health literacy may not automatically translate into postpartum depression literacy (PPDL). This study investigates the key determinants of PPDL among economically disadvantaged working women in urban India. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in H

Health Equity Barriers to Accessing Vaccination and Screening Services in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Narrative Review.

Vaccination and screening services are essential components of preventive care, yet access to these services remains unequal in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This narrative review examines health equity barriers affecting access to vaccination and screening services in LMICs, with screening evidence drawn predominantly from cervical cancer/HPV-related programs and selected other preventive screening contexts, and identifies strategies to improve equity in preventive care. Relevant English-language literature was identified through PubMed and Scopus and synthesized thematically

Spatiotemporal dynamics of low-carbon technology collaboration networks and regional public health governance implications: evidence from China's Yangtze River Delta.

Climate change and carbon-intensive development models pose potential long-term risks to public health by exacerbating exposure to air pollution. Promoting low-carbon technological innovation through regional collaboration has become one of the critical pathways to mitigate environmental health risks and to improve public health governance. Based on enterprise low-carbon patent data in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) from 2014 to 2023, this study integrates spatial statistical analysis, social network analysis, and geographic detector methods to systematically investigate the spatiotemporal evol

Highlighting gaps in knowledge and capabilities that limit decision-making to protect the health of outdoor workers exposed to wildfire smoke.

Pollutants in smoke from wildland and wildland urban interface (WUI) fires present an increasing risk to outdoor workers, field technicians, and others as the frequency and severity of these fires increase due to expansion of the WUI, changing land management practices, and climate change. Recent advancements have improved our understanding and ability to track and model wildfires, smoke plume chemistry, and associated health impacts. There are indications that smoke from burning certain fuels, including artificial materials present in many WUI fires and other biomass burned under certain cond

A descriptive study of the association of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales with environmental justice of a Southern urban county, USA.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) present a threat to global public health systems, yet the environmental contribution to antibiotic resistance prevalence has been understudied. The risk of antibiotic-resistant bacterium proliferating may be greater in neighborhoods experiencing environmental injustice (e.g., contaminated water, housing density). We examine spatial correlations between CRE detection rates and the Environmental Justice Index (EJI) across census tracts in an urban county. METHODS: We analyzed data from electronic health records of two major health systems

Environmental and Health Risk Assessments of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Based on Source Apportionment-A Case Study in Harbin, a Megacity in Northeastern China.

The multiple sources and concomitant negative environmental and health impacts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the atmosphere demonstrate their importance in air pollution control. This study employed environment- and health risk-oriented source apportionment methods to quantitatively estimate VOCs' contribution to air pollution and health risks, using offline VOC measurements from the Harbin urban region from 2021 to 2022. Total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) averaged 25.6 ± 8.2 ppb, except for alkanes (34.4%), and aromatics (24.2%) were found to be a major contributor, with the h

The co-occurrence of adverse childhood experiences and mental health among Latina/o adults: A latent class analysis approach.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to poor mental health among Latina/os. Few studies, however, have attempted to understand the extent to which ACEs co-occur and whether different forms of ACE co-occurrence differentially shape poor mental health patterns among Latina/os. The present study begins to address this gap by (1) identifying latent classes of ACEs and (2) determining whether and how different ACE classes shape high depressive symptoms among Latina/o adults. Data were drawn from two waves of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos, a longitudinal, comm

An appraisal of air quality, thermal comfort, acoustic, and health risk of household kitchens in a developing country.

Few studies have documented the air quality, noise, thermal comfort, and health risk assessment of household kitchens related to Sub-Sahara Africa. In this paper, air quality (CO and PM2.5), thermal comfort (relative humidity (RH) and temperature), noise, and health risk in urban household kitchens with kerosene-fueled stoves were presented. This study was carried out during the dry season (summer) in the Southwestern part of Nigeria. At the breathing zone, PM2.5 and CO concentrations in the assessed kitchens were measured. In addition, the noise level, RH, and air temperature in the assessed

Improving Care for Elders Who Prefer Informal Spaces to Age-Separated Institutions and Health Care Settings.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Despite advantages of urban areas (such as walkability, public transportation, nearby shopping, and health care services), challenges remain for elders aging in place to access care. The changing demographics of older adults, with higher rates of divorce, singlehood, and childlessness, often living alone and far from family, necessitate new strategies to support health and well-being. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Drawing on 5 years of ethnographic fieldwork and 25 interviews with elders in New York City, this study presents empirical insights into older adults' use

Do the health benefits of cycling outweigh the risks?

BACKGROUND: Although from a societal point of view a modal shift from car to bicycle may have beneficial health effects due to decreased air pollution emissions, decreased greenhouse gas emissions, and increased levels of physical activity, shifts in individual adverse health effects such as higher exposure to air pollution and risk of a traffic accident may prevail. OBJECTIVE: We describe whether the health benefits from the increased physical activity of a modal shift for urban commutes outweigh the health risks. DATA SOURCES AND EXTRACTION: We have summarized the literature for air pollut

Transgender people attending a Sydney sexual health service over a 16-year period.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have concluded that transgender people are a marginalised and stigmatised group, with high rates of sexually transmissible infections (STI), sex work, injecting drug use and multiple sexual partners. To our knowledge, this is the first study in Australia to focus on the sexual behaviour and sexual health needs of transgender people attending an urban sexual health clinic. METHODS: A retrospective case note review was undertaken of the transgender attendees of the Sydney Sexual Health Centre between 1990 and 2006. Demographics, gender characteristics, risk behaviou

Silent Worries: A Cross-Sectional Study of School-Going Adolescents' Unaddressed Health Concerns and Communication With Trusted Adults in Mongolia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adolescents may experience uncertainty about physical and mental health problems, and such uncertainty can negatively affect well-being. In settings where access to appropriate services may be uneven, trusted adults can be an important source of support. This study investigated the prevalence of concerns regarding possible undiagnosed or untreated health conditions among adolescents in Mongolia and the likelihood that they would communicate these concerns to a trusted adult. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 4789 students from grades 7 to 12 in 13 schools across

Cancer clinical trial participation: a qualitative study of Black/African American communities' and patient/survivors' recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Black/African Americans experience disproportionate cancer burden and mortality rates. Racial and ethnic variation in cancer burden reflects systemic and health-care inequities, cancer risk factors, and heredity and genomic diversity. Multiple systemic, sociocultural, economic, and individual factors also contribute to disproportionately low Black/African American participation in cancer clinical trials. METHODS: The Participatory Action for Access to Clinical Trials project used a community-based participatory research approach inclusive of Black/African American community-based

A Qualitative Assessment of Interprofessional Knowledge Gaps in the Setting of Child Physical Abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Health care professionals can protect children by identifying and reporting injuries concerning for child physical abuse, such as sentinel injuries (bruising and intra-oral injuries in precruising infants). Citing knowledge and collaboration barriers, health care professionals sometimes fail to recognize sentinel injuries as concerning for abuse. Interprofessional education may be an ideal format to improve health care professional's responses to sentinel injuries. However, it is traditionally limited to health care professions, while responding to suspected child physical abuse
