Evaluation of the Worldwide Occurrence of Rabies in Dogs and Cats Using a Simple and Homogenous Framework for Quantitative Risk Assessments of Rabies Reintroduction in Disease-Free Areas through Pet Movements.

Dog and cat rabies cases imported from rabies enzootic countries represent a major threat for areas that have acquired rabies-free status and quantitative risk analyses (QRAs) are developed in order to assess this risk of rabies reintroduction through dog and cat movements. Herein we describe a framework to evaluate dog and cat rabies incidence levels in exporting countries along with the associated uncertainty for such QRAs. For enzootic dog rabies areas (EDRAs), we extended and adapted a previously published method to specify the relationship between dog rabies vaccination coverage and canin

Domestic Horse Bite: An Unusual Etiology of Crush Injury of the Fourth Finger-How to Manage?

Almost 2% of all emergency admissions involve an animal bite. While horses bite humans very rarely, their bites are mostly associated with fatalities. Herein, we report the case of a 23-year old bitten by a domestic horse causing a crush injury to his fourth finger with fracture dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint. The patient benefited upon arrival at the emergency department from copious irrigation with saline serum, tetanus toxoid, postexposure rabies vaccination, and prophylactic antibiotic therapy. In the operating room, surgical exploration found the ulnar digital pedicle s

Global neurosurgery: current and potential impact of neurosurgeons at the World Health Organization and the World Health Assembly. Executive summary of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies-World Health Organization Liaison Committee at the 71st World Health Assembly.

Since the creation of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948, the annual World Health Assembly (WHA) has been the major forum for discussion, debate, and approval of the global health agenda. As such, it informs the framework for the policies and budgets of many of its Member States. For most of its history, a significant portion of the attention of health ministers and Member States has been given to issues of clean water, vaccination, and communicable diseases. For neurosurgeons, the adoption of WHA Resolution 68.15 changed the global health landscape because the importance of surgical

Epidemiological situation of transboundary animal diseases in North African countries-proposition of a regional control strategy.

The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) defined transboundary animal diseases (TADs) as those that are of significant economic, trade, and food security importance for a considerable number of countries. TADs can easily spread to other countries, reach epidemic proportions, and where control, management, or exclusion is required cooperation between several countries. The North African countries are vulnerable to several TADs by virtue of its geographical location, its borders with the Sahel region, and peculiar control constraints on the budgets of the national veterinary services of each

Utility of the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube assay for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in Moroccan children.

SETTING: The utility of interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs), such as the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) test, in diagnosing active tuberculosis (TB) in children is unclear and depends on the epidemiological setting. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of QFT-GIT for TB diagnosis in children living in Morocco, an intermediate TB incidence country with high bacille Calmette-Gurin vaccination coverage. DESIGN: We prospectively recruited 109 Moroccan children hospitalised for clinically suspected TB, all of whom were tested using QFT-GIT. RESULTS: For 81 of the 109 children, the f

Dynamic epidemiology of acute viral hepatitis in Japan.

The epidemiology of acute viral hepatitis (AVH) is dynamic and affected by many factors including hygiene, socioeconomic status and vaccination coverage. A total of 4,302 cases of AVH were sequentially enrolled in this nationwide study between 1980 and 2008. Of the cases of AVH, acute hepatitis A (AHA) accounted for 1,583 (36.8%), acute hepatitis B (AHB) for 1,197 (27.8%), acute hepatitis C (AHC) for 359 (8.3%), and non-A, non-B and non-C (non-ABC) for 1,163 (27.0%). Between 1980 and 1995, the proportions of AHA, AHB, AHC and non-ABC were approximately 40, 25, 10 and 25%; between 1996 and 2003

TBE--awareness and protection: the impact of epidemiology, changing lifestyle, and environmental factors.

The International Scientific Working Group on Tick-Borne Encephalitis (ISW-TBE) held its 12th Annual Meeting in January 2010. The international awareness among the issue of TBE is on the rise, as the European Center for Disease Control considers TBE of high relevance and has launched a series of activities aimed at improving awareness of this tick-transmissible infection and also the World Health Organization has taken up the cause of TBE. The epidemiology of TBE in Europe is characterized by two distinct trends, i.e., a consistent expansion of risk areas on the one hand and major fluctuations

Global tuberculosis trends: a reflection of changes in tuberculosis control or in population health?

BACKGROUND: Many international organizations are advocating for new funds for tuberculosis (TB) specific interventions. Although this approach should help reduce TB incidence, improvements in population health may also be important. We have analyzed the association between changes in population health and health service indicators, and concomitant changes in TB incidence between 1990 and 2005. METHODS: Country level data on population health and health services, economic and epidemiologic indicators were obtained for 165 countries. Regression methods were used to estimate the association of c

The African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC).

The African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) was launched in 1995, ultimately to eliminate human onchocerciasis from the African countries in which the disease was endemic. This goal is being achieved, via a public-private partnership, using a strategy, of community-directed treatment (CDT) with ivermectin, that is based on the empowerment of each target community. It is estimated that the Programme saved 3 million disability-adjusted life-years between 1996 and 2005, and, with a free supply of ivermectin, this gives an estimated 17% economic rate of return on the cost of treatment

Unexpected combination of acute croup and myocarditis: case report.

BACKGROUND: Lower vaccination coverage among foreign-born children is of concern because they live in households and communities characterized by more intense exposure to infectious diseases. Because of their higher prevalence rates, there is an increasing occurrence of infectious diseases imported into developed countries. This case report emphasizes the emerging necessity for new clinicians and pathologists of having competence with old infectious disease pathology. CASE PRESENTATION: A three and a half year old girl, who presented with croup history of 5 days and has been in severe respira

A study of excess mortality during influenza epidemics in the Czech Republic, 1982-2000.

Influenza related mortality rates have been established in many countries; nevertheless, studies focusing on the Central European population have been rare to date. We assess mortality attributable to influenza by comparing all cause mortality and mortality due to diseases of the circulatory system during influenza epidemic and non-epidemic periods, as defined by acute respiratory infection surveillance data. Data on total mortality, mortality due to diseases of the circulatory system and surveillance data for influenza and other respiratory infections were used in a general linear model with

Influenza vaccination for healthcare workers who care for people aged 60 or older living in long-term care institutions.

RATIONALE: People who work in long-term care institutions (LTCIs), such as doctors, nurses, other health professionals, cleaners and porters (and also family visitors), may have substantial rates of influenza during influenza seasons. They often continue to work when infected with influenza, increasing the likelihood of transmitting influenza to those in their care. The immune systems of care home residents may be weaker than those of the general population; vaccinating care home workers could reduce transmission of influenza within LTCIs. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of vaccinating heal

Children's Surgery: The Missing Link in the Global Child Survival Agenda.

Global child health is at an inflection point. Under-five mortality has fallen substantially over recent decades, yet progress is slowing and preventable deaths and disability remain concentrated in low- and middle-income countries. As mortality from vaccine-preventable diseases and other infections declines, birth defects and other surgically treatable conditions account for an increasing share of the residual burden. For many children, access to timely, safe and affordable surgical, anesthesia and perioperative care is the difference between survival, disability and death. Yet these services

A binning tool to reconstruct viral haplotypes from assembled contigs.

BACKGROUND: Infections by RNA viruses such as Influenza, HIV still pose a serious threat to human health despite extensive research on viral diseases. One challenge for producing effective prevention and treatment strategies is high intra-species genetic diversity. As different strains may have different biological properties, characterizing the genetic diversity is thus important to vaccine and drug design. Next-generation sequencing technology enables comprehensive characterization of both known and novel strains and has been widely adopted for sequencing viral populations. However, genome-s

Widening East-West inequality in life expectancy in Europe during the COVID-19 pandemic: An international comparative study.

For decades, life expectancy in Eastern Europe has lagged behind that in Western Europe, although the gap has narrowed since the mid-2000s. We examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these long-term trends by estimating and decomposing East-West differences in excess mortality and life expectancy losses. Regression models were used to explore the contribution of multiple factors to the observed differences. While excess mortality was initially low in Eastern Europe, partly due to lower air connectivity, by October 2020 and throughout 2021, the region experienced significantly higher li

Significant but small: the modest impact of population ageing on reported COVID-19 case rates worldwide.

BACKGROUND: Older adults experienced disproportionate morbidity during the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the independent contribution of population ageing to cross-national variation in reported COVID-19 case rates remains insufficiently examined. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This global ecological study analyzed data from 215 "countries" to assess whether ageing independently predicts COVID-19 case rates, which are influenced by national testing capacity and reporting practices. Confounding variables included economic affluence, the Henneberg Index, urbanization, and vaccination coverage. Anal

Impact of immunization strategies, public health and social measures on the incidence of varicella among children aged 0-14 years in Quzhou City.

This study evaluates the impact of different immunization strategies and public health and social measures (PHSMs) on varicella incidence among children in Quzhou. Data on varicella cases among children aged 0-14 y in Quzhou from 2006 to 2022 were collected. An interrupted time-series (ITS) model was used to analyze trends in monthly varicella incidence during the implementation of the single-dose and two-dose vaccination strategies and the PHSMs. ITS analysis indicated that, following the introduction of the two-dose strategy, the varicella monthly incidence rate decreased immediately by 8.19

Rabies Outbreak in an Urban, Unmanaged Cat Colony - Maryland, August 2024.

Exposure to a rabid animal is a life-threatening emergency because infection is almost always fatal if rabies postexposure prophylaxis (PEP) is not initiated promptly. In August 2024, the Maryland Department of Health was notified that an aggressive feral cat had been captured and euthanized and had subsequently received a positive test result for rabies. The cat was part of a group of approximately 20 local feral cats and kittens that was receiving no, or little, human care (i.e., an unmanaged cat colony). Autochthonous outbreak of respiratory diphtheria caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Germany, September 2024.

In September 2024, a school-aged child (P1), unvaccinated against diphtheria, was hospitalised with severe respiratory diphtheria caused by toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae. P1 subsequently died from the disease. The child's mother (P2) had pharyngitis 9 days before the onset of symptoms of P1 and subsequently tested positive for C. diphtheriae. In multilocus sequence typing (MLST), the C. diphtheriae isolates from P1 and P2 were of sequence type (ST) 574. In core genome (cg)MLST, they were clonal, suggesting recent human-to-human transmission. This indicates the first autochthonous respi
