Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) due to membranous obstruction of the hepatic vein and the inferior vena cava is rare in children. We report a child with BCS that had a membranous obstruction at the level of the hepatic veins. The web was successfully dilated percutaneously by balloon catheters. Symptoms and signs of obstruction improved without any complication. As percutaneous catheterization is an effective, safe and repatable procedure, we recommend this technique for treatment of children and adults with BCS due to membranous obstruction of the hepatic veins.

We encountered a 78-year-old female with jaundice induced by Lutembacher's syndrome, which, to our knowledge, is the first such case to be reported. Laboratory data and ultrasonographic examination revealed liver congestion with dilatation of the inferior vena cava and hepatic veins. A large atrial septal defect was found using two-dimensional echocardiography; the mitral valve area measured 1.6 cm2 by planimeter. Clinicians should be aware of congenital heart disease as an underlying cause of jaundice.

A 27 years old man was treated after surgery and classic chemotherapy for a right testicular teratoma (stage IV). Two months after the end of chemotherapy the patient developed "a Growing Teratoma Syndrome" with left subclavian and mediastinal nodes enlargement and bulky abdominal cystic masses with vena cava compression, collateral circulation and oedema of inferior members. Four debulking surgical approaches: cervical, thoracic and abdominal were performed and permitted complete functional recovery.

Cor triatriatum dexter is a congenital heart defect in which the embryologic right sinus venosus valve persists as a septum within the right atrium. Cor triatriatum dexter was diagnosed in 2 dogs on the basis of clinical signs, two-dimensional echocardiography, and cardiac catheterization. In 1 of the dogs, the condition was successfully treated by surgical resection of the intra-atrial septum. In the second dog, the defect was associated with an incomplete persistent cranial left vena cava and Ebstein's anomaly; surgery was declined.

Six cases of retroaortic left renal vein have been studied, two in corpses and four by means of Computed Tomography. Any previous pathology has been rejected. The total number of dissected specimens was 116, whereas the patients with non-pathological retroperitoneum studied by CT numbered 170. In our six cases, the left renal vein formed a single trunk of considerable size, retroaortic position and directed obliquely towards the inferior vena cava.

A methodology to evaluate routine ultrasonography performed in liver pathology is described. The results of 62 autopsies, undoubtedly the most accurate anatomical reference, were compared to those of sonographic examination of the liver performed two months before death at the most. Discordance was found in 23 cases. False negative results in the detection of metastasis and thrombosis of hepatic veins or inferior vena cava were the major pitfalls. The reasons and the consequences of each error were determined for each case.

Venograms were obtained in 17 patients 5-8 days after percutaneous dilatation of the common femoral vein for insertion of the Kimray-Greenfield inferior vena cava filter. The venograms showed thrombosis of the common femoral vein in seven (41%) of the 17 patients, four of whom were symptomatic. Common femoral vein thrombosis can have serious clinical sequelae. The possibility of this complication should be considered before inserting the filter percutaneously via the femoral vein.

Innominate vein thrombosis as a result of previous hemodialysis catheter placement occurred in a patient with a functioning radial-cephalic fistula, resulting in massive edema with bleb formation. Diagnosis was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging and the complication was successfully managed by subclavian vein-superior vena cava bypass. This experience suggests the need to consider the possibility of proximal vein occlusion in selecting arteriovenous fistula sites and, rather than abandoning the fistula, allowing it to serve to protect patency of a proximal bypass.

The visceral block, composed of both kidneys and their vascular pedicles, inferior vena cava, ureters and bladder, was removed from a 3-day-old male anencephalic donor and transplanted into a 32-year-old adult in chronic renal failure. The urinary tract was reconstructed by vesicovesicostomy for technical ease, and prevention of reflux and ureteral stenosis. Maximum urine output was 150 ml. per day and the kidney grafts were lost owing to rejection 5 months after transplantation.

Adrenal masses are amenable to ultrasonic examination. The ultrasonic characteristics of eight adrenal masses in 6 patients are described. In particular, an ultrasonic study of the natural history and progression of a large adrenal adenoma is reported. Adrenal masses on the right side may mimic right posterior liver masses on transverse scans alone. They may compress and displace the liver with expansion. Posterolateral impressions on the inferior vena cava occur. Differentiation from a superior pole renal mass is not always possible.

Ligation of the inferior vena cava above the renal veins in male Sprague-Dawley rats produces a predominantly transient renal injury with vascular congestion, tubular degeneration and necrosis with calcification. This is accompanied by impaired renal function with temporary azotaemia, hyperkalaemia, phosphate retention but with a normal calcium level. The parathyroid glands on the second postoperative day show cellular hypertrophy and on the third and fourth days signs of rapid cell proliferation with numerous mitoses. Thereafter the glands remain enlarged.

The Greenfield filter can be used with a low complication rate provided one adheres to certain principles. First, preoperative venography to define the inferior vena caval anatomy will help avoid difficulties associated with anatomic variations. At the time the study is carried out, it would be extremely useful if the radiologist places a radiopaque marker at the level of the renal veins. This will ensure that filters will be placed in the infrarenal position when appropriate, thus preventing occasional inadvertent discharge, particularly into the right renal vein. Second, use of a guide wire

Intravenous leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare benign tumor originating from the smooth muscle of the uterus. Tumor cells spread along the veins, which may involve the uterine veins, pelvic veins, inferior vena cava, and even the right atrium. This case report describes a postmenopausal woman with IVL extending into the right heart chambers. The patient successfully underwent surgery and was discharged without complications. This report highlights valuable insights into the preoperative diagnosis and clinical management of IVL.

A 69-year-old female patient with known recurrence of esophageal cancer presented with fever and elevated inflammatory markers. In the recent past, a suspicious mediastinal lymph node had been biopsied via bronchoscopy. Consequently, a lymph node abscess developed, leading to blood stream infection (pathogen: Streptococcus anginosus) via a fistula into the superior vena cava. Through a preexisting atrial septal defect, the infection also spread to the brain, causing multiple brain abscesses.

A 50-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus and a history of aortic arch replacement surgery for Stanford type A aortic dissection experienced a reoccurrence of an ascending aortic aneurysm and coronary artery occlusion. Computed tomography revealed that the aneurysm was compressing the superior vena cava and right atrium. The patient underwent urgent surgery to repair the aneurysm. This case highlights that aortic aneurysms can reoccur even after total arch replacement in systemic lupus erythematosus patients.

Hepatic vein thrombosis (HVT), or Budd-Chiari syndrome, is a rare disorder resulting from the obstruction of blood flow from the liver to the inferior vena cava and eventually back to the heart. HVT can lead to extensive hepatocellular injury and portal hypertension and may require liver transplantation in patients. We present a rare cause of HVT and subsequent liver failure secondary to transhepatic venous catheterization for hemodialysis (HD) in a patient with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Venous excess ultrasound score (VExUS) is a recently described ultrasound-based scoring system that quantifies systemic congestion using Doppler flow indices of the hepatic and portal vein in addition to inferior vena cava assessment. There are many potential and emerging applications of this modality. We discuss the case of a severely congested heart failure patient presenting for urgent non-cardiac surgery where VExUS parameters were used to monitor and guide his decongestive therapy postoperatively.

A 26-year-old Japanese woman experienced threatened cardiac rupture after mitral valve replacement and debridement of a left ventricular (LV) posterior wall abscess caused by infectious endocarditis. We performed cardiac autotransplantation using the bicaval technique to allow bench repair of the recurrent abscess. A balloon catheter was inflated in the inferior vena cava to obtain a bloodless anastomotic field. This is the first report of autotransplantation for threatened LV rupture after posterior wall repair.

Multi-imaging modalities should be considered in patients with atrial septal defects (ASDs) in which the degree of right ventricular enlargement is not fully explained by the small size of ASD found on conventional transthoracic echocardiography. We report a case of crescent-shaped superior sinus venosus ASD discriminated using real-time three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography. MDCT confirmed its relationship with the superior vena cava and the absence of combined anomalies, such as the pulmonary venous return anomaly.

We present a case of left isomerism with total anomalous systemic venous connection where the inferior vena cava was absent and all other systemic veins connected abnormally to the left atrium. The right atrium was hypoplastic with an intact atrial septum. Blood flow to the lungs was through a large ventricular septal defect. The diagnosis was made with echocardiography, angiography, and computed tomography. Complete repair was performed successfully, and the 7-year-old patient had an uneventful recovery.
