Percutaneous CT-guided Onyx embolization of CSF-venous fistula: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: CSF-venous fistulas (CVFs) are an increasingly recognized cause of spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). Cases of SIH can present with symptoms ranging from orthostatic headache to severe debilitating headaches, vertigo, back pain, vision changes, and cognitive impairment. CVFs are an aberrant direct fistulous connection between a spinal nerve root sleeve and adjacent paraspinal veins. Treatment options may include blood patch, surgical ligation, or transvenous embolization. OBSERVATIONS: A 67-year-old male presented with severe positional headaches following minor head trau

Epidemiological Evidence for Upper Respiratory Infections as a Potential Risk Factor for Meniere's Disease: A Korean National Health Sample Cohort Study.

Meniere's disease (MD) is a chronic inner ear disorder characterized by tinnitus, ear fullness, episodic vertigo, and fluctuating hearing loss, which significantly impacts quality of life and poses management challenges. Recent evidence suggests that upper respiratory infections (URIs) may contribute to MD's onset. This study examines the potential link between URIs and MD using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (2002-2019). We analyzed 19,721 individuals with MD and 78,884 matched controls, adjusting for demographic factors and comorbidities using p

A New Neurological Screening Approach for Diagnosing Brainstem Infarction Using the Calling Method and Familiar Voices.

This report proposes a new approach to assess dysarthria in patients with brainstem infarction by involving familiar individuals. Collaboration provides valuable insights compared to subjective traditional methods. A man in his 70s presented with resolved positional vertigo. Standard neurological tests showed no abnormalities, and inquiries with the patient's friend did not reveal voice changes. While inquiring about voice changes with family, friends, and acquaintances is a common practice in clinical settings, our approach involved the patient calling out to his friend from a distance. Symptoms associated with headache in youth.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the underlying relationships between a broad range of headache-associated symptoms and how they relate to headache burden. BACKGROUND: Symptoms associated with head pain inform classification of headache disorders. However, many headache-associated symptoms are not included in the diagnostic criteria, which is largely based on expert opinion. Large symptom databases can assess headache-associated symptoms irrespective of pre-existing diagnostic categories. METHODS: We conducted a large single-center cross-sectional study on youth (6-17 years old) assessing patient-rep

Clinical differences in symptomology, characteristics, and risk factors in patients with post-acute sequelae of COVID-19: an experience from a tertiary-care academic center.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and has caused significant mortality and morbidity since it was first recognized in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Patients may suffer from a constellation of symptoms termed post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC) . Here we present findings of a retrospective cohort study describing the prevalence and predicting factors of patient-reported post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC). Categorical variables were summarized as frequency (percentage) and compared between vaccine status groups using Fisher's exact test. Co

Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Skull Base Paragangliomas.

The treatment of skull base paragangliomas has moved towards the use of cranial nerve preservation strategies, using radiation therapy and subtotal resection in instances when aiming for gross total resection would be expected to cause increased morbidity compared to the natural history of the tumor itself. The goal of this study was to analyze the role of surgery in patients with skull base paragangliomas treated with CyberKnife stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for definitive tumor control. A retrospective review identified 22 patients (median age 65.5 years, 50% female) treated with SRS from

The human vestibular cortex: functional anatomy of OP2, its connectivity and the effect of vestibular disease.

Area OP2 in the posterior peri-sylvian cortex has been proposed to be the core human vestibular cortex. We investigated the functional anatomy of OP2 and adjacent areas (OP2+) using spatially constrained independent component analysis (ICA) of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from the Human Connectome Project. Ten ICA-derived subregions were identified. OP2+ responses to vestibular and visual motion were analyzed in 17 controls and 17 right-sided vestibular neuritis patients who had previously undergone caloric and optokinetic stimulation during fMRI. In controls, a posterior
