Prepharyngeal dysphagia in Parkinson's disease.

Dysphagia in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) is most often attributed to pharyngeoesophageal motor abnormalities. In our study of patients with idiopathic PD, attention was focused on prepharyngeal symptoms and motor functions. Using the Hoehn and Yahr disease severity scale, patients were grouped into those with mild/moderate disease [subgroup I (n = 38)] and those with advanced disease [subgroup II (n = 34)]. Dysphagia symptoms were present in 82% of all patients, but subgroup I patients voiced significantly more complaints. Conversely, many prepharyngeal abnormalities of ingestion, i

Neuroendoscopic third ventriculostomy. A practical alternative to extracranial shunts in non-communicating hydrocephalus.

The outcomes in 103 patients who have undergone third ventriculostomy for non-communicating hydrocephalus at our institution form 1978-1994 have been analysed. The group has been sub-divided by age, cause of hydrocephalus and whether the third ventriculostomy was the initial definitive procedure or whether progression of their hydrocephalus had been arrested for a long time (usually years) by an extracranial shunt prior to third ventriculostomy. At the time of shunt malfunction (usually blockage) a third ventriculostomy was performed if the anatomy was, or could be made suitable for the safe p

Balance Rehabilitation in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review.

Background and Objectives: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the leading causes of long-term disability among adults, with consequences for balance, postural stability, and quality of life. Addressing balance disorders in TBI patients requires a tailored and continuous care approach; the existing literature underlines a general framework for physiotherapy treatments, but no clear profile of technique, dosage and timing of intervention emerges. The present scoping review, therefore, aimed at mapping physiotherapy approaches to balance in TBI population, highlighting their potential effects

Design and validation of a simulation-based training module for ileo-transverse intracorporeal anastomosis.

BACKGROUND: The benefits of the totally laparoscopic right hemicolectomy have been established, but its adoption has been limited by the challenges of intracorporeal suturing. While simulation is effective for training advanced surgical skills, no dedicated simulation-based course exists for intracorporeal ileo-transverse anastomosis (ICA). This study aimed to develop and validate a simulation module for training in ICA. METHODS: This study employed a proof-of-concept design for an educational tool. Key aspects of the anastomosis were identified using the team's surgical experience, surgical

Performance of teenaged action video game players on the Developmental Eye Movement and King-Devick tests.

Action video game (AVG) players have been reported to demonstrate improved perceptual, cognitive, and motor skills, as well as enhanced eye movements such as saccade latency and accuracy. This study examined if these improvements are also observed in two common clinical eye movement assessments, the Developmental Eye Movement (DEM) and King-Devick tests. Ninth and tenth graders (15-16 years old) without learning disabilities or oculomotor dysfunctions, and who do not regularly play ball sports were tested in the DEM and King-Devick tests in random order. Those playing AVG ≥ 5 hours per week we

Evaluation of the need for preoperative short hookwire placement for small pulmonary lesions.

PURPOSE: Although preoperative marking is often required to accurately locate the targets for video-assisted thoracic surgery, target lesions can be identified intraoperatively without marking in some cases; however, the frequency and characteristics of these lesions remain unclear. Therefore, we aimed to retrospectively evaluate the need for a short hookwire for preoperative localization of small pulmonary lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computed tomography (CT)-guided short hookwire placement was performed for 176 lesions (mean diameter, 7.9 ± 3.5 mm) in 171 sessions prior to video-assisted

Identifying strokes in Nigerian children with sickle cell disease as part of clinical trials: training curriculum for healthcare professionals in low-income settings.

INTRODUCTION: Nigeria has the highest proportion of children with sickle cell anemia (SCA) globally; without transcranial Doppler screening and ongoing treatment (regular blood transfusions or hydroxyurea therapy), 10% will have a stroke in childhood. In low-resource settings, training to recognize and prevent strokes in children with SCA is vital. A sustainable Sickle Cell Disease Stroke Prevention Teams program was established, as part of clinical trials, to address the need for stroke care in northern Nigeria. We describe our health professional stroke training curriculum and specific appli

Asynchronous Video Directly Observed Therapy to Monitor Short-Course Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Observing medication ingestion through self-recorded videos (video directly observed therapy [VDOT]) has been shown to be a cost-effective alternative to in-person directly observed therapy (DOT) for monitoring adherence to treatment for tuberculosis disease. VDOT could be a useful tool to monitor short-course latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) treatment. METHODS: We conducted a prospective randomized controlled trial comparing VDOT (intervention) and clinic-based DOT (control) among patients newly diagnosed with LTBI who agreed to a once-weekly 3-month treatment regimen of ison

Book-Sharing for Toddlers with Clefts (BOOST): Protocol for a randomized controlled trial of a remote intervention to promote language development in children with cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: Children with cleft palate, with or without cleft lip (CP±L), exhibit language delays on average compared to children without clefts. Interventions to address these disparities are scarce. In this multi-center study, Book Sharing for Toddlers with Clefts (BOOST), we will test a remote, parent-focused intervention to promote language development in children with CP±L. OBJECTIVES: The study will test two primary hypotheses. First, toddlers randomized to BOOST will exhibit better language outcomes than children receiving standard-of-care (SOC). Second, we hypothesize that the BOOST p

DementiaBank: Theoretical Rationale, Protocol, and Illustrative Analyses.

PURPOSE: Dementia from Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized primarily by a significant decline in memory abilities; however, language abilities are also commonly affected and may precede the decline of other cognitive abilities. To study the progression of language, there is a need for open-access databases that can be used to build algorithms to produce translational models sensitive enough to detect early declines in language abilities. DementiaBank is an open-access repository of transcribed video/audio data from communicative interactions from people with dementia, mild cognitive impa
