Malnutrition and bilateral central retinal vein occlusion in a young woman: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Can vitamin B12 and folate deficiency cause central retinal vein occlusion? We conducted a literature search to find out whether nutritional deficiency of vitamin B12 and folate can lead to impaired vision. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient in the article presented in an eye-casualty department in the North East of England with gradual painless visual loss over six weeks. She was found to have bilateral central retinal vein occlusion with significant anaemia and vitamin B12 and folate deficiency. CONCLUSION: Vitamin B12 and folate deficiency can lead to elevated levels of homocyst

Examination of correlations between vitamin D and melatonin levels with sleep among women aged 18-49 years.

OBJECTIVES: Although clinical research is still going on to determine any relationship between vitamin D and sleep regulation, only few studies have identified the role of vitamin D metabolism in sleep disorders. The current study aims to examine the incidence of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency in the sample group and its effects on sleep quality and melatonin level. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was designed. A total of 79 women aged 18-49 years who applied to the research and training hospital between 1 October and 30 November 2021 participated in the study. Data were collected using

Folate and vitamin B12 status and dietary intake of anaemic adolescent schoolgirls in the delta region of Myanmar.

The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence of deficiency of folate and vitamin B12 and, simultaneously, the nutrient intake adequacy of folate, vitamin B12, iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and calcium in 391 adolescent anaemic (Hb<120 g/l) schoolgirls living in the delta region of Myanmar (Burma). Dietary intakes were assessed using a 3 d estimated food record. The distribution of observed intakes calculated from the food records were adjusted for usual intakes, and the prevalence of inadequacy was estimated using the estimated average requirement cut-point method. Median

The Role of Vitamin D in Rare Diseases-A Clinical Review.

Background/Objectives: Patients suffering from rare diseases are particularly vulnerable to vitamin D deficiency. The role of vitamin D status in rare disease management remains insufficiently investigated and employed in routine clinical practice. Methods: This review analyses current data on vitamin D status in selected rare diseases of organs involved in vitamin D metabolism: skin (epidermolysis bullosa, morphea), liver (autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis), kidney (Alport syndrome, Fabry disease), and cystic fibrosis as a model of a systemic ra

The vitamin D connection to pediatric infections and immune function.

Over the past 20 y, a resurgence in vitamin D deficiency and nutritional rickets has been reported throughout the world, including the United States. Inadequate serum vitamin D concentrations have also been associated with complications from other health problems, including tuberculosis, cancer (prostate, breast, and colon), multiple sclerosis, and diabetes. These findings support the concept of vitamin D possessing important pleiotropic actions outside of calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism. In children, an association of nutritional rickets with respiratory compromise has long been recog

Postoperative metabolic and nutritional complications of bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery has become an increasingly important method for management of medically complicated obesity. In patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, up to 87% with type 2 diabetes mellitus develop improvement or resolution of their disease postoperatively. Bariatric surgery can reduce the number of absorbed calories through performance of either a restrictive or a malabsorptive procedure. Patients who have undergone bariatric surgery require indefinite, regular follow-up care by physicians who need to follow laboratory parameters of macronutrient as well as micronutrient malnutriti

Vital D: A modifiable occupational risk factor of UK healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: The role of Vitamin D in immune function is well reported with a growing evidence base linking low levels to poorer outcomes from infectious disease. Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are prevalent worldwide with healthcare workers identified as a known at-risk group. Here we aim to investigate serum Vitamin D levels in a UK population of front line healthcare workers and to promote the occupational risk. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 639 volunteers was conducted to identify the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency amongst a population of front-line heal

Relationship of vitamin D to pathogenesis and outcomes of hidradenitis suppurativa: a systematic review.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by painful sinus tracts and significant scarring. Recent evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency may play a role in the pathogenesis and outcomes of HS. This systematic review aims to evaluate the relationship between vitamin D levels and HS, exploring potential therapeutic benefits of vitamin D supplementation. This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO (ID:CRD42024566092). A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Medline (OVID), and Web of Science

[Osteomalacy induced by anticonvulsants. One case with a study of vitamin D metabolism].

A case of osteomalacia, with no cause apart from the ingestion of anti-convulsants, is reported. As was shown by a study with tritium labelled vitamin D, the metabolism of the latter was accelerated in this case in comparison with deficiency type osteomalacia. This lends support to the hypothesis that anti-convulsant medications, acting via a hepatic enzyme induction process, cause increased transformation of vitamin D into inactive metabolites, thus explaining a certain deficiency in vitamin D in treated epileptics, a deficiency state which requires treatment.

Vitamin D status in healthy black African adults at a tertiary hospital in Nairobi, Kenya: a cross sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D has been known since the twentieth Century for its benefits in bone health. Recent observational studies have demonstrated its benefits in infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and non-communicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. This has led to a dramatic increase in testing among adults. The cut-offs for vitamin D deficiency have been debated for decades and the current cut off is derived from a Caucasian population. Studies done among black African adults in Africa are few with vitamin D deficiency ranging from 5 to 91%. A few

Polyneuropathy while on duodenal levodopa infusion in Parkinson's disease patients: we must be alert.

Some reports have emerged describing the occurrence of Guillain-Barré syndrome and polyneuropathy related to vitamin B(12) deficiency in some patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) treated with continuous duodenal levodopa infusion. We describe five PD patients who developed axonal polyneuropathy and vitamin B(12) deficiency while on treatment with duodenal levodopa infusion, review other cases reported in the literature, discuss potential etiologic factors, and suggest a possible algorithm for the management and prevention of this complication. One case of Guillain-Barré syndrome and at least

[Assessment methods and evolution on vitamin A status].

Vitamin A is one of nutrients which are indispensable to all people, especially children and pregnant women. In the world, severe vitamin A deficiency (VAD) has been controlled efficiently. But to many countries, especially those developing, subclinical or marginal vitamin A deficiency is still a public health problem. It is very important and necessary to assess the status of vitamin A of the population who are in risk of VAD before drawing and carrying out the intervention strategy. Currently, clinical, histological, functional and biochemical methods can be used to evaluate the level of vit

Vitamin status of healthy subjects in Burgundy (France).

A nutrition survey was conducted in Burgundy (France) with a population sample of 337 middle-aged and healthy subjects (157 males and 180 females) recruited at a health examination center in 1985-1986. The status of beta-carotene, thiamin, riboflavin, folate, vitamin B6, B12, C, A, D, and E was assessed by means of 7-day food records and biochemical studies. Results were compared with two other recent nutritional surveys conducted in France: ESVITAF (control group only) and Val de Marne surveys. The dietary information collected for each subject was compared to the 1992 French Recommended Diet

Study of serum vitamin D levels in men with premature androgenetic alopecia.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency had been associated with various hair loss disorders, such as telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and female pattern hair loss. However, previous studies have not found a correlation between serum vitamin D levels and the severity of androgenetic alopecia. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted for a period of one year in a public tertiary care hospital. Fifty males clinically diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia and 50 age-matched healthy controls were recruited. Serum vitamin D levels in both cases and controls were measured by radioimmunoassay techniqu

Free and Bioavailable Vitamin D Are Correlated with Disease Severity in Acute Pancreatitis: A Single-Center, Prospective Study.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) is primarily caused by inflammation and immunological responses, both of which are regulated by vitamin D. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between the severity of AP and vitamin D levels, including its total, free, and bioavailable forms. Eighty individuals with AP were enrolled in this study. Serum levels of free 25(OH)D3, bioavailable 25(OH)D3, and total 25-hydroxyvitamin D 25(OH)D3 were assessed. The severity of the disease course was assessed by scoring systems (Revised Atlanta classification, Ranson score, CTSI). Vitamin D deficiency was co
