A postulated role of the contact system in anaphylactic reactions to insect stings was investigated. During prospective, in-hospital sting challenge, we collected serial blood samples from five normal volunteers and 16 patients with a history of insect-sting anaphylaxis. OBJECTIVE: To gauge the effectiveness of a new Doppler test for renal artery stenosis (RAS), based on the pulsatility index of the blood flow velocity spectrum within several interlobar arteries of both kidneys.
METHODS: Twenty normotensive volunteers and 49 hypertensive patients were investigated with ultrasound. Patients with angiographic signs of RAS underwent bilateral renal vein catheterization for renin measurement. Prostaglandin E was measured by radioimmunoassay in endoscopic biopsy specimens obtained from 7 normal healthy volunteers, 28 patients with a benign gastric ulcer, and 10 with a malignant gastric ulcer. Biopsy specimens were taken from the antral and body mucosa and from the ulcer edge in patients. The suitability of maltose for parenteral nutrition was investigated in metabolically healthy volunteers. A solution containing 20% of maltose was infused intravenously for four hours using three different doses (0.125 g/kg; 0.25 g/kg; 0.5 g/kg BW/h).
