Complexity of spatio-temporal plantar pressure patterns during everyday behaviours.

The human foot sole is the primary interface with the external world during balance and walking, and also provides important tactile information on the state of contact. However, prior studies on plantar pressure have focused mostly on summary metrics such as overall force or centre of pressure under limited conditions. Here, we recorded spatio-temporal plantar pressure patterns with high spatial resolution while participants completed a wide range of daily activities, including balancing, locomotion and jumping tasks. Contact area differed across task categories, but was only moderately corre

Automated Implementation of the Edinburgh Visual Gait Score (EVGS) Using OpenPose and Handheld Smartphone Video.

Recent advancements in computing and artificial intelligence (AI) make it possible to quantitatively evaluate human movement using digital video, thereby opening the possibility of more accessible gait analysis. The Edinburgh Visual Gait Score (EVGS) is an effective tool for observational gait analysis, but human scoring of videos can take over 20 min and requires experienced observers. This research developed an algorithmic implementation of the EVGS from handheld smartphone video to enable automatic scoring. Participant walking was video recorded at 60 Hz using a smartphone, and body keypoin

Muscle co-contraction and co-activation in cerebral palsy during gait: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) results from an injury to a developing brain. Muscle activation patterns during walking are disrupted in individuals with CP. Indeed, excessive muscle co-contraction or co-activation (MCo/MCa) is one of the characteristics of pathological gait. Although some researchers have studied MCo/MCa in individuals with CP during gait, inconsistent results limit our understanding of this literature. Increased knowledge of MCo/MCa patterns in individuals with CP may help the development of improved gait management approaches. RESEARCH QUESTION: This review aims to summari

A Real-Time Gait Phase Detection Method Based on BiLSTM-Attention Model.

Real-time gait phase detection is essential to achieve accurate and stable walking assistance in intelligent rehabilitation training for patients with motor disorders. This study proposed an efficient real-time detection method to detect three gait phases (loading response, stance, and swing) based on a bidirectional long short-term memory network with an attention layer (BiLSTM-Attention). We validated our method on a public dataset where eight healthy subjects' data during treadmill walking were employed. A single inertial measurement unit (IMU) was attached to the shank to measure the sagit

Continuous A-Mode Ultrasound-Based Prediction of Transfemoral Amputee Prosthesis Kinematics Across Different Ambulation Tasks.

OBJECTIVE: Volitional control systems for powered prostheses require the detection of user intent to operate in real life scenarios. Ambulation mode classification has been proposed to address this issue. However, these approaches introduce discrete labels to the otherwise continuous task that is ambulation. An alternative approach is to provide users with direct, voluntary control of the powered prosthesis motion. Surface electromyography (EMG) sensors have been proposed for this task, but poor signal-to-noise ratios and crosstalk from neighboring muscles limit performance. B-mode ultrasound

Can minimum toe clearance predict community-based trips by older adults?

BACKGROUND: Tripping is the leading cause of falls by older adults. While tripping theoretically occurs when minimum toe clearance (MTC) is insufficient to avoid an unseen obstacle, the relationship between MTC and community-based trips is unknown. RESEARCH QUESTION: To what extent do MTC and its variability predict the number of community-based trips during gait by older adults? METHOD: 51 older adults with normal or obese body mass index walked across an 8 m walkway. For each step, we identified MTC as the local minimum of the vertical trajectory of a toe marker during the swing phase. We

Feasibility of a Novel Therapist-Assisted Feedback System for Gait Training in Parkinson's Disease.

We tested the feasibility of one session of treadmill training using a novel physical therapist assisted system (Mobility Rehab) using wearable sensors on the upper and lower limbs of 10 people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Participants performed a 2-min walk overground before and after 15 min of treadmill training with Mobility Rehab, which included an electronic tablet (to visualize gait metrics) and five Opal sensors placed on both the wrists and feet and on the sternum area to measure gait and provide feedback on six gait metrics (foot-strike angle, trunk coronal range-of-motion (ROM), ar

An integrated text mining, literature review, and meta-analysis approach to investigate pedestrian violation behaviours.

The goal of this study is to provide an overview of previous research that investigated pedestrian violation behaviour, with a focus on identifying the contributing factors of such behaviour, its impact on pedestrian safety, the mitigation strategies, the limitations of current studies, and the future research directions. To that end, the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) text mining method was applied to extract a comprehensive list of studies that were conducted during the past 21 years related to pedestrian violation behaviours. Using the extracted studies, a multi-sectional literature revi

Transportation Mode Detection Using Temporal Convolutional Networks Based on Sensors Integrated into Smartphones.

In recent years, with the development of science and technology, people have more and more choices for daily travel. However, assisting with various mobile intelligent services by transportation mode detection has become more urgent for the refinement of human activity identification. Although much work has been done on transportation mode detection, accurate and reliable transportation mode detection remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel transportation mode detection algorithm, namely T2Trans, based on a temporal convolutional network (i.e., TCN), which employs multiple light

Short inertial sensor-based gait tests reflect perceived state fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, affecting more than 2.3 million people worldwide. Fatigue is among the most common symptoms in MS, resulting in reduced mobility and quality of life. The six-minute walking test (6MWT) is commonly used as a measure of fatigability for the assessment of state fatigue throughout treatment or rehabilitation programs. This 'gold standard' test is time-consuming and can be difficult and exhausting for some patients with high levels of disability or high rates of fatigue. RESEARCH QUESTIO

Corticospinal Control of a Challenging Ankle Task in Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury.

After incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), the control of lower extremity movements may be affected by impairments in descending corticospinal tract function. Previous iSCI studies demonstrated relatively well-preserved movement control during simple alternating dorsiflections and plantar flexions albeit with severely reduced motor strength and range of motion. This task, however, required comparably limited fine motor control, impeding the sensitivity to assess the modulatory capacity of corticospinal control. Therefore, we introduced a more challenging ankle motor task necessitating complex

Anosognosia in HD: Comparison of self-report and caregiver ratings with objective performance measures.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with Huntington's disease (HD) commonly experience anosognosia, a lack of awareness of deficits. Thus, it is important to examine the accuracy of patient vs caregiver ratings on the basis of objective performance-based measures. METHODS: The Anosognosia Scale (AS) was given to 33 patients with manifest HD and their caregivers. The AS consists of 8 items in which individuals rate their global abilities relative to same-aged peers. Scores range from very impaired to excellent. Caregiver and patient ratings were then correlated with objective measures. RESULTS: Caregiv

In silicomodeling of tibial fatigue life in physically active males and females during different exercise protocols.

Preventing bone stress injuries (BSI) requires a deep understanding of the condition's underlying causes and risk factors. Subject-specific computer modeling studies of gait mechanics, including the effect of changes in running speed, stride length, and landing patterns on tibial stress injury formation can provide essential insights into BSI prevention. This study aimed to computationally examine the effect of different exercise protocols on tibial fatigue life in male and female runners during prolonged walking and running at three different speeds. To achieve these aims, we combined subject

Examining the intrinsic foot muscles' capacity to modulate plantar flexor gearing and ankle joint contributions to propulsion in vertical jumping.

BACKGROUND: During human locomotion, a sufficiently stiff foot allows the ankle plantar flexors to generate large propulsive powers. Increasing foot stiffness (e.g., via a carbon plate) increases the ankle's external moment arm in relation to the internal moment arm (i.e., increasing gear ratio), reduces plantar flexor muscles' shortening velocity, and enhances muscle force production. In contrast, when activation of the foot's intrinsic muscles is impaired, there is a reduction in foot and ankle work and metatarsophalangeal joint stiffness. We speculated that the reduced capacity to actively

An integrated clustering and copula-based model to assess the impact of intersection characteristics on violation-related collisions.

The main goal of this study is to investigate the impact of a variety of factors on the frequency and the severity of pedestrian-vehicle collisions that involve pedestrian violations. To that end, the collision dataset of the City of Hamilton between 2010 and 2017 was reviewed to filter out pedestrian collisions that involved pedestrian violations. A Latent Class Analysis (LCA) method was applied to divide the dataset into a set of homogeneous clusters, based on traffic and intersection characteristics. A copula-based multivariate model was then developed for each cluster in order to study the

Interactions between autonomous vehicles and pedestrians at unsignalized mid-block crosswalks considering occlusions by opposing vehicles.

Visibility can be identified as one of the critical determinants for the safety performance of autonomous vehicles (AVs) on unsignalized mid-block crosswalks (UMC), which may be significantly influenced by build-up environment and surrounding vehicles. This study investigates the safety performance when AVs interact with pedestrians approaching from far-side sidewalks to UMCs considering the visual occlusion of opposing vehicles. A mathematical model is proposed for judging the visibilities of objects from observers' location under the impact of visual obstacles and is embedded into an agent-b
