Saccharomyces cerevisiae Nar1p is an essential Fe/S protein that exhibits striking similarity to bacterial iron-only hydrogenases. Current knowledge on the natural history of paracoccidioidomycosis states that the chronic form of the disease results from reactivation of quiescent foci established years or decades before during the primary lung infection. Once reactivated, the fungi can disseminate to virtually any organ or system. We present a case of disseminated histoplasmosis with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). A 38-year-old woman presented with fever, cough, dysphagia, significant weight loss and a loss of appetite. She also suffered from anaemia and cervical lymphadenopathy. A lymph node biopsy and a bone marrow aspirate showed intracellular yeast forms of Histoplasma capsulatum. She improved with parenteral amphotericin B and oral itraconazole. An unusual case of chronic pulmonary paracoccidiodomycosis and disseminated cryptococcosis in a non-HIV infected patient is reported in a 72-year-old previously healthy man. A chest radiograph disclosed a bilateral diffused interstitial infiltrate involving middle and lower lung fields. A cDNA for mRNA induced by antimycin A in Hansenula anomala was cloned. The mRNA for the cDNA was expressed in the yeast under the conditions expressing the cyanide-resistant respiration activity. A highly selective affinity label was introduced into the T7 phage RNA polymerase by means of GMP ortho-formylphenyl ester and [alpha-32P]UTP nearby the enzyme's active site, which was located using limited cleavage technique. Hydroxylamine, bromine, N-chlorosuccinimide, and cyanogen bromide were employed as the reagents. Analysis of gel-electrophoretic patterns of the cleavage products led to a conclusion that Lys631 is the target of labelling. The region nearby this residue has a high degree of sequence homology with regions of RNA polymerases from T3 and SP6 phages and yeast mitochondria.

Associations of clothing factors and vulvovaginal symptoms, signs, and microbiology were sought in 203 women seeking care at a university family medicine clinic. Clothing factors studied were use of panty hose, underwear for sleep, cotton lining panels, and pants vs skirts. Women wearing and not wearing panty hose had similar rates of vaginitis symptoms and signs, but yeast vaginitis was about three times more common among wearers. Relationships of other clothing factors to vaginitis were not found. Nonspecific vaginitis was not found to be related to clothing.
