BACKGROUND: This study is to determine the risk factors and outcome for post-pancreaticoduodenectomy bleeding, and to assess the roles of surgery and intravascular intervention in its management.
METHODS: Post-pancreaticoduodenectomy data of 628 patients were analyzed with regards to post-pancreaticoduodenectomy bleeding.
RESULTS: Post-pancreaticoduodenectomy bleeding occurred in 58 patients (9.2%) and led to death in 23 patients. Pancreatic leakage and intra-abdominal abscess were independent risk factors for both extraluminal and intraluminal post-pancreaticoduodenectomy bleeding. The most

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease may be complicated by symptoms that raise the suspicion of small-intestinal malignancy. The objective is to evaluate wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) in complicated celiac disease.
METHODS: This is a prospective study at a university referral center. There were 47 patients. The indications for WCE were abdominal pain (57%), cancer surveillance (23%), blood in the stool, or persistent iron deficiency (19%).

A 69-year-old man was admitted with low back pain and signs of nerve root compression. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed abscess formation in the left psoas region, spondylodiscitis L3-L4 and a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. The aortic aneurysm was replaced with a bifurcated vascular graft. One week later, laminectomy at the L4-level was done. In a small abscess, Mycobacterium bovis was found. The condition was considered to be a mycobacterial spondylitis secondary to BCG instillations of the urinary bladder for carcinoma. The patient received antituberculous medication for 9 months.

METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 102 women with singleton pregnancies who were found ultrasonographically to have uterine leiomyomas during the first half of their pregnancy and who gave birth at our hospital at > or = 22 weeks of gestation between January 1990 and December 1997.

The transverse muscle-splitting Maylard incision was used in 175 gynecologic patients who required pelvic-abdominal surgery. We present a graphical three-dimensional method that facilitates image registration and fusion, and provides quantitative geometric and volume information. In particular it enhances the use of functional (radiopharmaceutical) imaging (SPECT, PET) which, though a powerful clinical tool, has the disadvantage of low spatial resolution and ill-defined boundaries. Registration between functional images and structural images (MRI, CT) can augment the anatomical context of these functional images.
