Psychiatric symptoms and alzheimer's disease: Depression-anxiety comorbidity effects and their neurobiological mediating mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are common in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but their mechanisms of impact on disease progression remain unclear. This study investigates the relationships between psychiatric symptoms and AD, exploring potential neurobiological mediating mechanisms. METHODS: The study analyzed 6209 participants divided into four groups: AD control, AD with depression, AD with anxiety, and AD with comorbid depression and anxiety. Multivariate regression and structural equation modeling assessed the impact of psychiatric symptoms on AD onset, examining 8 potential mediating varia

Perception of induced dyspnea in fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Dyspnea perception is distorted in patients with medically unexplained dyspnea. The goals of this study were 1) to replicate these results in patients with fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), and 2) to investigate predictors of distorted symptom perception within the patient group, with a focus on negative affectivity (NA), psychiatric comorbidity and somatic symptom severity. METHODS: Seventy-three patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia and/or CFS and 38 healthy controls (HC) completed a rebreathing paradigm, consisting of a baseline (60s of room air), a rebreathing

Selected symptoms associated with sexual and physical abuse history among female patients with gastrointestinal disorders: the impact on subsequent health care visits.

BACKGROUND: Despite a growing literature pointing to the deleterious health effects of sexual and physical abuse history, few studies provide evidence about which medical symptoms are most affected. The aim of this paper is to determine the impact of sexual and physical abuse history on a selected set of medical symptoms, and to test how such abuse, medical symptoms and functional disability may affect subsequent health care visits. METHODS: We studied 239 women from a referral-based gastroenterology clinic; follow-up data were available on 196 of these women. All women were interviewed about

Posttraumatic stress symptoms following near-death experiences.

Persons who report "near-death experiences" (NDEs) acknowledge more intrusive symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than those who came close to death without NDEs, but not more avoidance symptoms, suggesting a nonspecific stress response. Although dissociation generally increases vulnerability to PTSD, the positive affect that distinguishes NDEs from other dissociative experiences may mitigate subsequent PTSD symptoms.

Autosomal dominant osteopetrosis (a family study).

Osteopetrosis is a rare metabolic disorder, characterized by an abnormal accumulation of bone mass probably caused by diminished bone resorption. Symptoms are directly and indirectly derived from the increased amount of bone. A family study was made, starting with a proband presenting with symptoms of trigeminal neuralgia. The pedigree indicated an autosomal dominant inheritance through three generations, comprising four affected subjects, of whom two were free of symptoms.

Early predictors of the childhood dysregulation profile from ages 5 to 8: evidence from the UK household study.

Childhood dysregulation profile (DP) involves co-occurring difficulties regulating emotions, behaviour and cognitions, and is associated with adverse outcomes. However, its early predictors are not well understood. We examined child- and family-related predictors of borderline and clinical DP symptoms at ages 5 and 8 years. Participants were 3,467 children from the UK Household Longitudinal Study. Parents reported on early child-related factors (infant regulatory problems, age 3 temperament and screen media use), prenatal exposures (smoking, alcohol) and postnatal family factors (parental psyc

Effects of aerobic exercise on concussion-related symptoms: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: A concussion is a head injury that temporarily affects the brain and results in various symptoms affecting an individual's functioning. Aerobic exercise has the potential to aid in recovery after traumatic brain injury. This systematic review aims to investigate the effects of independent aerobic exercise on concussion-related symptoms, define the appropriate timing and optimal treatment parameters, and provide future recommendations for future research. METHODS: 'PubMed, SCOPUS, CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science' databases were searched from inception to February 15, 20

Common symptoms of Alzheimer's dementia that are easily recognizable by families.

UNLABELLED: The increase in dementia incidence among the elderly is directly related to aging, which is associated with changes in bodily functions and other health-related risk factors. Alzheimer's dementia is the most prevalent form of dementia, and individuals in the late stages are predominantly dependent on other family members. Therefore, it is important for families, as the closest support group, to recognize common symptoms early. OBJECTIVE: To provide a family-friendly guide to the ten common symptoms of Alzheimer's dementia. METHODS: This is a descriptive survey-based research that

Social Support and Symptom Severity Among Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or Panic Disorder With Agoraphobia: A Systematic Review.

Panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PD/A) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are characterized by major behavioral dysruptions that may affect patients' social and marital functioning. The disorders' impact on interpersonal relationships may also affect the quality of support patients receive from their social network. The main goal of this systematic review is to determine the association between social or marital support and symptom severity among adults with PD/A or OCD. A systematic search of databases was executed and provided 35 eligible articles. Results from OCD studies in

The relationship between specific anxiety syndromes and somatic symptoms in adolescents with asthma and other chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND: The impact of a chronic disease on the emotional well-being of children and adolescents is controversial in the literature. This study tested the hypotheses that 1) a specific approach is required to assess emotional deviations in adolescents with chronic diseases and 2) specific anxiety symptoms are predictive of excessive somatic symptoms. METHODS: Emotional and somatic symptoms were measured in four groups, selected from a community sample of 897 adolescents: 32 with asthma, 20 with other severe chronic diseases, 30 with median scores (the true comparison group), and 29 with mi

Recurrent genital candidosis in women and the effect of intermittent prophylactic treatment.

A study of clotrimazole for the treatment of recurrent genital candidosis unexpectedly showed that symptoms and infection can be dissociated. The aim of the study was to see if intermittent antifungal treatment would reduce symptoms in women constantly distressed by recurrent genital candidosis. Forty women seriously affected by the condition were initially given oral and local antifungal treatment. When the patients were symptom-free and the vagina was free of yeasts, they were entered into a double-blind clinical trial and were treated prophylactically for four months with either intermitten

Evidence that a psychopathology interactome has diagnostic value, predicting clinical needs: an experience sampling study.

BACKGROUND: For the purpose of diagnosis, psychopathology can be represented as categories of mental disorder, symptom dimensions or symptom networks. Also, psychopathology can be assessed at different levels of temporal resolution (monthly episodes, daily fluctuating symptoms, momentary fluctuating mental states). We tested the diagnostic value, in terms of prediction of treatment needs, of the combination of symptom networks and momentary assessment level. METHOD: Fifty-seven patients with a psychotic disorder participated in an ESM study, capturing psychotic experiences, emotions and circu

Psychotic Symptoms in Patients With Major Neurological Diseases.

Neurological diseases often manifest with neuropsychiatric symptoms such as depression, emotional incontinence, anger, apathy and fatigue. In addition, affected patients may also experience psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. Various factors contribute to the development of psychotic symptoms, and the mechanisms of psychosis are similar, but still differ among various neurological diseases. Although psychotic symptoms are uncommon, and have been less well investigated, they may annoy patients and their families as well as impair the patients' quality of life and increase t

Measuring Symptom Severity and Quality of Life in Mastocytosis.

Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous disease with a wide spectrum of signs, symptoms, and concomitant disorders, such as skin lesions, anaphylaxis, osteoporosis, gastrointestinal involvement, and organomegaly. Disease specificity for frequently reported symptoms, such as fatigue, headache, anxiety, and brain fog, is poorly defined and need to be addressed in further studies. Patients with CM and non-AdvSM are mostly affected by mast cell mediator-related symptoms, whereas in AdvSM symptoms also result from organ damage, which makes their assessment challenging. In this paper we discuss approaches c
