Congenital atrichia associated with situs inversus and mesocardia.

Congenital alopecia includes a broad differential diagnosis and presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for the physician. Congenital atrichia is a rare form of irreversible alopecia that is usually inherited as an autosomal recessive pattern. We report a 2-year-old male child presenting with total alopecia of scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair since birth. The child had cardiac malposition with situs inversus of the viscera. Computed tomography of the chest and abdomen revealed median position of the heart with transposition of abdominal viscera. To our knowledge, this is the f

Multifocal scalp hair loss.

Cutaneous metastases from internal cancer are relatively uncommon in clinical practice, but they are very important to recognize. Metastases of skin may be a herald sign in the diagnosis of internal malignancy. Scalp metastasis from breast carcinoma is reported but it is rare. We describe a 42-year-old woman who presented with three foci of alopecia on her scalp resembling alopecia areata. She was a known case of breast carcinoma 10 years prior. Radical mastectomy and total chemotherapy was done 8 years prior. An incision biopsy of an alopecic patch was done revealing metastases of breast carc

Cyclosporine-induced alopecia:a case report, FDA adverse event reporting system analysis and literature assessment.

Cyclosporine is a potent immunosuppressive drug for various immune-mediated diseases in children. Cyclosporine's expected therapeutic effect also carries a wide range of side effects. One of the most common and intriguing dermatological side effects is hypertrichosis. However, recent reports have recognized alopecia as a potential adverse effect of cyclosporine. Here, we report a case of a 29-month-old boy diagnosed with aplastic anemia. During cyclosporine therapy, the patient presented with hair loss on the scalp, which and subsequently spread to the eyebrows and eyelashes. The alopecic symp

'A detective look' at hair biopsies from African-American patients.

BACKGROUND: A patient's ethnicity can be an important clue in the diagnosis of scarring alopecia as some disorders such as traction alopecia (TA) and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) are more prevalent in or exclusive to African-Americans. OBJECTIVES: To perform a retrospective review of 60 scalp biopsies from African-American patients including 25 cases of CCCA, 22 cases of TA, five cases of frontal fibrosing alopecia, three cases of discoid lupus erythematosus, three cases of hair breakage and two cases of alopecia areata. METHODS: Serial horizontal and vertical sections wer

Nonsurgical therapy for hair loss.

This article is an update of the currently available options for medical therapies to treat androgenetic alopecia in men and women. Emerging novel therapeutic modalities with potential for treating these patients are discussed. Because androgenetic alopecia is progressive in nature, stabilization of the process using medical therapy is an important adjunct to any surgical hair-restoration plan.

Atrichia with papular lesions resulting from a nonsense mutation within the human hairless gene.

Atrichia with papular lesions is a rare autosomal recessive form of alopecia characterized by hair loss soon after birth and the development during childhood of a diffuse papular rash. We have previously shown that this disorder results from a deleterious mutation in the human hairless gene, a gene also involved in the pathogenesis of a related but clinically distinct form of congenital alopecia, termed alopecia universalis congenita. In this report, we describe a novel nonsense mutation in exon 4 of the human hairless gene in a consanguineous kindred affected with atrichia with papular lesion

Recent Advances in Understanding of the Etiopathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Management of Hair Loss Diseases.

Hair-loss diseases comprise heterogenous conditions with respective pathophysiology and clinicopathological characteristics. Major breakthroughs in hair follicle biology and immunology have led to the elucidation of etiopathogenesis of non-scarring alopecia (e.g., alopecia areata, AA) and cicatricial alopecia (e.g., lichen planopilaris, LPP). High-throughput genetic analyses revealed molecular mechanism underlying the disease susceptibility of hair loss conditions, such as androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Hair loss attracted public interest during the COVID-19 p

Study of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) in 13 cases of familial frontal fibrosing alopecia: CYP21A2 gene p.V281L mutation from congenital adrenal hyperplasia linked to HLA class I haplotype HLA-A*33:01; B*14:02; C*08:02 as a genetic marker.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aetiology of frontal fibrosing alopecia is unknown, and its genetic aspect remains uncharacterised. The aim of this report is to elucidate if major histocompatibility complex is associated with familial frontal fibrosing alopecia. METHODS: A case-control study was performed of 13 patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia belonging to six families. Their human leukocyte antigen profiles were compared to the data of 636 healthy controls without frontal fibrosing alopecia. Patients underwent high-resolution genomic typing for human leukocyte antigen class I and II loci

Mechanism-Based Strategies for Prevention of Taxane-Induced Hair Follicle Damage in Cancer Chemotherapy.

The taxane family of compounds, including paclitaxel, docetaxel (Taxotere), and cabazitaxel (Jevtana), are common drugs used in chemotherapy for the frontline treatment of most major types of cancer. Alopecia, the dramatic loss of hair, is a common side effect that became a symbol of the suffering of many cancer patients. Concerted efforts have been made to understand the mechanism of taxane toxicity to hair follicles and, thus, prevention methods. Taxanes act by stabilizing cellular microtubules, which consequently cause mitotic arrest and then failure, as microtubules play critical functions

Deoxyshikonin from Arnebiae Radix promotes hair growth by targeting the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia is a common skin condition with limited effective treatments. Arnebiae Radix (AR) is a traditional Asian herb used for various skin disorders. However, its specific components and the mechanisms underlying its hair growth-promoting effects remain elusive. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the primary active components in AR that are responsible for hair growth as well as determine the molecular mechanisms responsible for treating alopecia. METHODS: Alopecia areata mice were employed to assess the influence of AR extracts on hair growth. The active AR components w

Graham-Little-Piccardi Syndrome: A Lens Through beyond What is Known.

Graham-Little-Piccardi syndrome (GLPS) is a rare form of follicular lichen planus and comprises cicatricial alopecia of the scalp, noncicatricial alopecia of the axillae, and/or pubis and spinous follicular papules involving the trunk and extremities. We herein report a classic case of GLPS in a 49-year-old female. Uniqueness of our case is due to its additional features of frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA). Although overlap between GLPS and FFA has been mentioned in literature, such numbers are scanty. Therapeutic response with oral steroid and retinoid is also far better in contrast to what i

Status of research on the development and regeneration of hair follicles.

Hair loss, or alopecia, is a prevalent condition in modern society that imposes substantial mental and psychological burden on individuals. The types of hair loss, include androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and telogen effluvium; of them, androgenetic alopecia is the most common condition. Traditional treatment modalities mainly involve medical options, such as minoxidil, finasteride and surgical interventions, such as hair transplantation. However, these treatments still have many limitations. Therefore, exploring the pathogenesis of hair loss, specifically focusing on the development an

Tofacitinib for the treatment of lichen planopilaris: A case series.

Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is an inflammatory cicatricial alopecia for which many different therapies are attempted with varying success. The Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, tofacitinib, has been shown to be effective in treating the noncicatricial alopecia, alopecia areata. As in alopecia areata, upregulation of interferon and JAK signaling may play a role in LPP. We retrospectively reviewed the cases of 10 patients with recalcitrant LPP who were treated with oral tofacitinib. Patients received oral tofacitinib 5 mg twice or three times daily for 2-19 months as either monotherapy or adjunctive t
