Ingestion of a newly described North American mushroom species from Michigan resulting in chronic renal failure: Cortinarius orellanosus.

BACKGROUND: Some mushrooms in the genus Cortinarius are well known to cause acute and chronic renal failure. Until now, there have been no confirmed cases of renal failure due to the ingestion of a Cortinarius mushroom in North America. We describe a case of a woman who ingested mushrooms found under an oak tree in western Michigan and developed chronic renal failure. METHODS: Phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of nuclear-encoded ribosomal RNA was performed between an unconsumed sample of the Michigan specimens, a control sample of Cortinarius orellanus (JF

Osteoporosis research thrives: IOF WCO-ECCEO10.

The recent World Congress on Osteoporosis (IOF WCO-ECCEO10), held in Florence on 5-8 May 2010, not only drew a record number of researchers and clinicians, it also attracted a far greater number of scientific abstracts than ever before (850). Needless to say, the organizing societies, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO), were delighted to welcome a record number of attendees (5500). The record numbers suggest that research in the field is thriving and that there is strong interest

Ankylosing spondylitis in sub-Saharan Africa.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) represents a chronic inflammatory bone disease of the axial skeleton that manifests as chronic back pain and progressive stiffness of the spine. It characteristically affects young adults with a peak age of onset between 20-30 years. In contrast to Western Europe and North America, the disease is rare in Sub-Saharan Africa where the majority of the population is HLA-B27 negative. Even in some African populations where HLA-B27 is prevalent (for example, in Gambia and Senegal, where 3-6% of the general population has HLA-B27), the disease is also said to be rare. Howe

Incidence and risk factors for agranulocytosis in Latin American countries--the Latin Study: a multicenter study.

PURPOSE: LATIN is a multinational case-control study designed to identify risk factors for agranulocytosis and to estimate the incidence rate of the disease in some Latin American countries. METHODS: Each study site in Brazil, Argentina and Mexico conducted an active search of agranulocytosis patients in hematology clinics and looked for possible associations with drug use. RESULTS: The overall incidence rate was 0.38 cases per 1 million inhabitant-years. Agranulocytosis patients more often took medications already associated with agranulocytosis than controls (p = 0.01), mainly methimazole

Epidemiological data on consumer allergy to p-phenylenediamine.

Many women and men now dye their hair. p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) is a frequent and important component of permanent hair dye products; exposure to it may cause allergic contact sensitization, acute dermatitis, and severe facial oedema. To increase our understanding of PPD allergy, we reviewed published literature containing PPD patch test data from dermatitis patients and individuals in the general population. This was performed to estimate the median prevalence and the weighted average of PPD sensitization and thereby assess the burden of PPD-containing hair care products on health. Literature

Genetic diversity and species delimitation in the opportunistic genus Fonsecaea.

Genetic diversity and species delimitation were investigated among 39 isolates recovered from clinical and environmental sources in Central and South America, Africa, East Asia and Europe. All had been morphologically identified as Fonsecaea spp. Molecular analyses were based on sequences of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacers (ITS), -tubulin (TUB1) and actin (ACT1) regions. A phylogenetic approach using haplotype networks was used to evaluate species delimitation and genetic diversity. The presence and the modes of reproductive isolation were tested by measuring the index of differenti

Transmission dynamics and changing epidemiology of West Nile virus.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a flavivirus that is maintained in a bird-mosquito transmission cycle. Humans, horses and other non-avian vertebrates are usually incidental hosts, but evidence is accumulating that this might not always be the case. Historically, WNV has been associated with asymptomatic infections and sporadic disease outbreaks in humans and horses in Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia. However, since 1994, the virus has caused frequent outbreaks of severe neuroinvasive disease in humans and horses in Europe and the Mediterranean Basin. In 1999, WNV underwent a dramatic expansion of

17D yellow fever vaccines: new insights. A report of a workshop held during the World Congress on medicine and health in the tropics, Marseille, France, Monday 12 September 2005.

Yellow fever (YF) is a major health problem in endemic regions of Africa and South America. It also poses a serious health risk to travellers to areas with endemic disease. Currently, there is no effective drug treatment for YF; however, 17D YF vaccines have demonstrated high rates of effectiveness and good safety profiles. This workshop was organized to review key data and issues about YF disease and currently available 17D YF vaccines. Starting with an overview of the current disease epidemiology in Africa and South America and a review of the safety data of 17D YF vaccines, data were then p

Molecular epizootiology of rabies associated with terrestrial carnivores in Mexico.

Epizootiological patterns of rabies are described, using antigenic and genetic analysis of samples obtained from infected domestic and wild mammals in 20 Mexican states during 1976-2002. Two independent origins are suggested for rabies in Mexican carnivores. One group shares ancestry with canine rabies, while the other group appears to share a common origin with bat rabies in North America. More than 12 sublineages were found in rabid dog populations, suggesting at least six major spatio-temporal foci. Coyote rabies was found as independent enzootic foci that probably emerged via spillover fro

Antigenic diversity of hepatitis B virus strains of genotype F in Amerindians and other population groups from Venezuela.

The adw4 subtype of hepatitis B virus (HBV) belongs to a unique genomic group (genotype F) representing the original HBV strains from the New World. Data regarding the prevalence of this subtype among HBV carriers in South America are, however, scarce, and those concerning HBV genotype F are based on only a few samples from Latin America. In this study, serum samples were obtained from 141 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carriers from Amerindians and urban populations from Venezuela. The HBsAg subtype was identified with monoclonal antibodies in 105 samples, and the HBV genotype was identi

Development of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for identification of venoms from snakes in the Agkistrodon genus.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a purified myotoxin from the venom of Agkistrodon contortrix laticintus (broad-banded copperhead) as immunogen was developed for potential use in the identification of envenomation by snakes belonging to the genus Agkistrodon native to North America. The specificity of the assay was tested using a total of 43 venom samples from snakes of diverse geographic locations. Venom samples used for cross-reactivity determination represent eight snake families including 14 species from the genus Crotalus. The assay detected venom from all Agkistrodon sp

True hermaphroditism: geographical distribution, clinical findings, chromosomes and gonadal histology.

We reviewed 283 cases of human true hermaphroditism published from 1980 to 1992. Of the 96 cases described in Africa 96.9% showed a 46,XX karyotype. In Europe 40.5% of 74 cases and 21.0% of the patients in North America had chromosomal mosaicism. The 46,XY karyotype is extremely rare (7%) and equally distributed through Asia, Europe and North America. Of 283 cases 87 were of black or black mixed origin with a 46,XX chromosomal constellation. The most common gonad in patients with true hermaphroditism, an ovotestis, was found in 44.4% of 568 gonads. Gonads with testicular tissue were more frequ

Hip fractures: a worldwide problem today and tomorrow.

Hip fractures lead to excess deaths and substantial disability. Most are related both to falls and to osteoporosis, which affects one in four post-menopausal white women, but a lesser number of men or women of other races. Consequently, about half of the 1.66 million hip fractures worldwide in 1990 occurred in Europe and North America. Even within these regions, however, there is substantial variation in hip fracture incidence rates, which suggests the existence of important environmental factors that could be manipulated to reduce hip fracture occurrence. This is important because in the Unit

Histoplasmosis in patients with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Five patients with disseminated histoplasmosis are reviewed. Four of five had the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and one was receiving steroid therapy. All were immigrants to the United States from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, or South America, and none had a history of travel to regions of the United States where Histoplasma is endemic. Histoplasma complement fixation titers to mycelial antigen were not demonstrable in three of three patients in whom they were measured. Of the four patients with AIDS, Histoplasma capsulatum was isolated from bone marrow aspirates in two pa

Unmasking healthcare disparities: the underreporting of gender, race, and ethnicity data in high-impact factor minimally invasive surgery journals.

BACKGROUND: Diverse representation in clinical research is essential for equitable healthcare. Despite mandates from organizations like the NIH and ICMJE, race and gender remain underreported in surgical research, raising concerns about the generalizability of findings. This study examines demographic reporting trends in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and advanced endoscopy publications before and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A systematic review of Surgical Endoscopy, Journal of Robotic Surgery, and Surgical Innovation was conducted, analyzing articles published betwee

Historical Serological Evidence of Human Exposure to Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (New Jersey and Indiana Serotypes) in Dairy Regions of Costa Rica (1999).

BACKGROUND: Vesicular stomatitis is endemic in southern Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. The causative agent, vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV; Rhabdoviridae: Vesiculovirus), includes two serotypes-New Jersey (VSNJV) and Indiana (VSIV)-both present in Costa Rica. Transmission occurs via direct contact, fomites, and insect vectors. Occupational exposure, particularly in livestock workers, is a known risk, and high human seroprevalence has been reported elsewhere in Central America. Some cases present with a self-limited febrile illness, occasionally with vesicular lesions. No

Serological evidence of West Nile virus in blood donors from a city on the northern border of mexico: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is primarily transmitted by the bite of Culex mosquitoes, but other mechanisms, such as blood transfusion, have also been described. Since its identification in the Americas in 1999, WNV has circulated consistently in the United States of America (USA); however, although WNV has been detected in humans in South America, no major outbreaks have occurred in more than 20 years. One of the hypotheses to explain this difference is the underdiagnosis of the infection. In Mexico, nine isolated cases have been officially reported since 2003 despite its proximity to th

Re-emergence of Oropouche virus as a novel global threat.

Oropouche fever is a viral infectious disease caused by the Oropouche virus (OROV), primarily transmitted by the biting midge Culicoides paraensis. Historically considered endemic to the Amazon region, particularly in Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador, Oropouche fever has resulted in an estimated 500,000 recorded infections. However, its true burden has remained largely unknown for over seven decades, serving as a classic example of a neglected tropical disease. In 2024, however, OROV rapidly expanded beyond its traditional Amazonian hotspots, spreading across Brazil and into other parts of South and

Three decades of transformation: a bibliometric study of gender and geographic trends in international orthopaedic journal publications.

AIMS: Academic journals are essential for advancing knowledge, yet gender disparities in orthopaedic authorship persist. While most previous studies focus authorship trends on mainly North American journals, this study analyzes gender distribution among primary and senior authors, along with the geographical origins of articles, in three orthopaedic journals based in Europe and North America. METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional analysis was conducted on articles published from 2000 to 2004, 2010 to 2014, and 2020 to 2024 in the following journals: Acta Orthopaedica (AO), The Bone & Join
