Small apes adjust rhythms to facilitate song coordination.

Song coordination is a universal characteristic of human music. Many animals also produce well-coordinated duets or choruses that resemble human music. However, the mechanism and evolution of song coordination have only recently been studied in animals. Here, we studied the mechanism of song coordination in three closely related species of wild Nomascus gibbons that live in polygynous groups. In each species, song bouts were dominated by male solo sequences (referred to hereafter as male sequence), and females contributed stereotyped great calls to coordinate with males. Considering the functi

Environmental stressors and zoonoses in the Arctic: Learning from the past to prepare for the future.

The risk of zoonotic disease transmission from animals to humans is elevated for people in close contact with domestic and wild animals. About three-quarters of all known human infectious diseases are zoonotic, and potential health impacts of these diseases are higher where infectious disease surveillance and access to health care and public health services are limited. This is especially the case for remote circumarctic regions, where drivers for endemic, emerging, and re-emerging zoonotic diseases include anthropogenic influences, such as pollution by long-range transport of industrial chemi

Comparative digestive morphology and physiology of five species of Peromyscus under controlled environment and diet.

Digestive morphology and physiology differ across animal species, with many comparative studies uncovering relationships between animal ecology or diet, and the morphology and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract. However, many of these studies compare wild-caught animals feeding on uncontrolled diets and compare broadly related taxa. Thus, few studies have disentangled the phenotypic consequences of genetics from those potentially caused by the environment, especially across closely related species that occupy similar ecological niches. Here, we examined differences in digestive morpholog

Propagation of SARS-CoV-2 in Calu-3 Cells to Eliminate Mutations in the Furin Cleavage Site of Spike.

SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis, vaccine, and therapeutic studies rely on the use of animals challenged with highly pathogenic virus stocks produced in cell cultures. Ideally, these virus stocks should be genetically and functionally similar to the original clinical isolate, retaining wild-type properties to be reliably used in animal model studies. It is well-established that SARS-CoV-2 isolates serially passaged on Vero cell lines accumulate mutations and deletions in the furin cleavage site; however, these can be eliminated when passaged on Calu-3 lung epithelial cell lines, as presented in this st

Mammalian deltavirus without hepadnavirus coinfection in the neotropical rodent Proechimys semispinosus.

Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is a human hepatitis-causing RNA virus, unrelated to any other taxonomic group of RNA viruses. Its occurrence as a satellite virus of hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a singular case in animal virology for which no consensus evolutionary explanation exists. Here we present a mammalian deltavirus that does not occur in humans, identified in the neotropical rodent species Proechimys semispinosus The rodent deltavirus is highly distinct, showing a common ancestor with a recently described deltavirus in snakes. Reverse genetics based on a tandem minus-strand complementary DNA

Modelling decision-making under uncertainty: A direct comparison study between human and mouse gambling data.

Decision-making is a conserved evolutionary process enabling us to choose one option among several alternatives, and relies on reward and cognitive control systems. The Iowa Gambling Task allows the assessment of human decision-making under uncertainty by presenting four card decks with various cost-benefit probabilities. Participants seek to maximise their monetary gain by developing long-term optimal-choice strategies. Animal versions have been adapted with nutritional rewards, but interspecies data comparisons are scarce. Our study directly compares the non-pathological decision-making perf

Experimental Infection of Calves by Two Genetically-Distinct Strains of Rift Valley Fever Virus.

Recent outbreaks of Rift Valley fever in ruminant livestock, characterized by mass abortion and high mortality rates in neonates, have raised international interest in improving vaccine control strategies. Previously, we developed a reliable challenge model for sheep that improves the evaluation of existing and novel vaccines in sheep. This sheep model demonstrated differences in the pathogenesis of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) infection between two genetically-distinct wild-type strains of the virus, Saudi Arabia 2001 (SA01) and Kenya 2006 (Ken06). Here, we evaluated the pathogenicity of th

Anomalous colour in Neotropical mammals: a review with new records for Didelphis sp. (Didelphidae, Didelphimorphia) and Arctocephalus australis (Otariidae, Carnivora).

Anomalous colourations occur in many tropical vertebrates. However, they are considered rare in wild populations, with very few records for the majority of animal taxa. We report two new cases of anomalous colouration in mammals. Additionally, we compiled all published cases about anomalous pigmentation registered in Neotropical mammals, throughout a comprehensive review of peer reviewed articles between 1950 and 2010. Every record was classified as albinism, leucism, piebaldism or eventually as undetermined pigmentation. As results, we report the new record of a leucistic specimen of opossum

Pharmacologic induction of epidermal melanin and protection against sunburn in a humanized mouse model.

Fairness of skin, UV sensitivity and skin cancer risk all correlate with the physiologic function of the melanocortin 1 receptor, a Gs-coupled signaling protein found on the surface of melanocytes. Mc1r stimulates adenylyl cyclase and cAMP production which, in turn, up-regulates melanocytic production of melanin in the skin. In order to study the mechanisms by which Mc1r signaling protects the skin against UV injury, this study relies on a mouse model with "humanized skin" based on epidermal expression of stem cell factor (Scf). K14-Scf transgenic mice retain melanocytes in the epidermis and t

LY2405319, an Engineered FGF21 Variant, Improves the Metabolic Status of Diabetic Monkeys.

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a novel metabolic regulator that represents a promising target for the treatment of several metabolic diseases. Administration of recombinant wild type FGF21 to diabetic animals leads to a dramatic improvement in glycaemia and ameliorates other systemic measures of metabolic health. Here we report the pharmacologic outcomes observed in non-human primates upon administration of a recently described FGF21 analogue, LY2405319 (LY). Diabetic rhesus monkeys were treated subcutaneously with LY once daily for a period of seven weeks. The doses of LY used were 3,

The motivations and practice-area interests of first-year French veterinary students (2005-2008).

Concerns about new trends in the veterinary profession in several industrialized countries have received significant attention recently. We conducted an online survey among first-year veterinary students enrolled between 2005 and 2008 in France's four National Veterinary Schools (Ecoles Nationales Vétérinaires [ENV]) to inquire into what determined future graduates' practice-area interests and how they built a concept of their future work. A total of 1,080 students-or 70% of first-year students-responded to the survey. These students were predominantly of middle and higher social classes and m

Morphine, but not trauma, sensitizes to systemic Acinetobacter baumannii infection.

Acinetobacter baumannii is an important nosocomial pathogen in civilian intensive care units. Recently the incidence has increased in wounded military personnel. Morphine is documented in numerous animal studies to be immunosuppressive and to sensitize to infection. The hypotheses were tested that morphine, administered for analgesia in the battlefield, predisposes to Acinetobacter infection, and that the opioid may have an additive or synergistic effect with trauma. To test these hypotheses, an intraperitoneal infection model was established in mice using several Acinetobacter strains. Morphi

Comparison of West African and Congo Basin monkeypox viruses in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice.

Although monkeypox virus (MPXV) studies in wild rodents and non-human primates have generated important knowledge regarding MPXV pathogenesis and inferences about disease transmission, it might be easier to dissect the importance of virulence factors and correlates of protection to MPXV in an inbred mouse model. Herein, we compared the two clades of MPXV via two routes of infection in the BALB/c and C57BL/6 inbred mice strains. Our studies show that similar to previous animal studies, the Congo Basin strain of MPXV was more virulent than West African MPXV in both mouse strains as evidenced by

Mice lacking TNFalpha receptors 1 and 2 are resistant to death and fulminant liver injury induced by agonistic anti-Fas antibody.

The liver is particularly susceptible to Fas-mediated cytotoxicity. Mice given an adequate parenteral dose of agonistic anti-Fas antibody (aFas) or of FasL are known to develop a devastating liver injury and to die in a few hours. The present work shows that mice lacking TNFR1 and TNFR2 (R(-)) both survive a single dose of aFas, otherwise rapidly lethal, and develop a mild form of hepatic damage, compared to the much more severe liver injury that in a few hours strikes wild-type mice (R(+)), eventually involving increased activity of proteases of different families (caspase 3-, 8-, and 9-like,

Advances in BHV1 (IBR) research.

Bovine Herpesvirus Type 1 (BHV1) is the aetiological agent of a number of diseases and not only of IBR, namely infectious pustular vulvovaginitis (IPV), infectious balanoposthitis (IBP), conjunctivitis, encephalomyelitis, mastitis, abortion, enteritis, and lesions in the interdigital space. The serological identical strains differ, however, in some aspects. Typical genital strains usually cause a mild illness, sometimes not even detected clinically, but serologically. They hamper eradication programmes and do not cause IBR when inoculated intranasally. The other--modern--strains are, however,

The Ninth Datta Lecture. Molecular biology of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.

The prion, the transmissible agent that causes spongiform encephalopathies such as scrapie, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, is believed to be devoid of nucleic acid and identical with PrPSc, a modified form of the normal host protein PrPC which is encoded by the single copy gene Prnp. The 'protein only' hypothesis proposes that PrPSc, when introduced into a normal host, causes the conversion of PrPC into PrPSc; it therefore predicts that an animal devoid of PrPC should be resistant to prion diseases. We generated homozygous Prnp(olo) ('PrP knockout') mice

Evaluation of the Flashtest multiplex qPCR system for rapid pre-laboratory screening for African swine fever infection.

INTRODUCTION: African swine fever (ASF) is a devastating viral disease of domestic pigs and wild boar. As no safe vaccine is currently available, prevention relies primarily on strict biosecurity measures. Early diagnosis is essential to reduce the risk of ASF spread. Among the available methods, qPCR is considered the gold standard and is recommended by the World Organisation for Animal Health. The Flashtest system is designed to perform the complete workflow, from genetic material extraction to qPCR analysis, enabling rapid (under 1 hour) and accurate detection of various animal diseases in

Lagochilascariosis in Brazil: A systematic search and descriptive review, and the first report of Lagochilascaris minor Leiper, 1909 infection in a domestic cat from Santa Catarina, southern Brazil.

Lagochilascariosis is a rare and neglected zoonotic helminthiasis caused by Lagochilascaris spp., in which domestic and wild carnivores and humans act as definitive hosts. Among the six described species, Lagochilascaris minor is the only one known to infect humans. Clinically, the disease is characterized by nodular lesions, mainly in the cervical region, often associated with purulent exudate, and it occurs throughout the Neotropical region. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review of lagochilascariosis in animals and humans and to report the first case of L. minor infection in a dome

Xenopus laevis as an infection model for human pathogenic bacteria.

Animal infection models are essential for understanding bacterial pathogenicity and corresponding host immune responses. In this study, we investigated whether juvenile Xenopus laevis could be used as an infection model for human pathogenic bacteria. Xenopus frogs succumbed to intraperitoneal injection containing the human pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Listeria monocytogenes. In contrast, non-pathogenic bacteria Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli did not induce mortality in Xenopus frogs. The administration of appropriate antibiotics suppressed mort
