On the roles of the Duodenum and the Vagus nerve in learned nutrient preferences.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: In most species, including humans, food preference is primarily controlled by nutrient value. However, the gut-brain pathways involved in preference learning remain elusive. The aim of the present study, performed in C57BL6/J mice, was to characterize the roles in nutrient preference of two critical elements of gut-brain pathways, i.e. the duodenum and vagal gut innervation. METHODS: Adult wild-type C57BL6/J mice from a normal-weight cohort sustained one of the following three procedures: duodenal-jejunal bypass intestinal rerouting (DJB), total subdiaphragmatic vagotomy (

The effect of expectation on transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to suppress food craving and eating in individuals with overweight and obesity.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a neuromodulation technique with potential to treat eating disorders and obesity. As for any potential treatment, it is important to assess the degree to which expectation effects contribute to its reported efficacy. This study assessed the effect of tDCS on amount of food craving and eating while tightly controlling treatment expectation. N = 74 adults with overweight or obesity were informed of the known effects of tDCS to suppress craving and eating. Once electrodes were on the head, half of the participants were told they were receiving rea

Fat preference and fat intake in individuals with and without anorexia nervosa.

Fat restriction is a characteristic eating behavior among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN), and laboratory meal studies demonstrate restricted fat intake among low-weight patients. The Geiselman Food Preference Questionnaire-I© (FPQ) is a validated self-report measure that yields a fat preference score (FPS). Prior research reported that patients with AN had a significantly lower FPS than did healthy control (HC) participants. The goal of the current study was to compare self-reported fat preference (FPS) to fat intake (multi-item meal (MIM) study) in low-weight ANs and HCs. Specific aim

Basal ganglia volume and shape in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Reward-centred models have proposed that anomalies in the basal ganglia circuitry that underlies reward learning and habit formation perpetuate anorexia nervosa (AN). The present study aimed to investigate the volume and shape of key basal ganglia regions, including the bilateral caudate, putamen, nucleus accumbens (NAcc), and globus pallidus in AN. METHODS: The present study combined data from two existing studies resulting in a sample size of 46 women with AN and 56 age-matched healthy comparison (HC) women. Group differences in volume and shape of the regions of interest were e

Weight-based victimization, eating behaviors, and weight-related health in Sexual and Gender Minority Adolescents.

Weight-based victimization (WBV) is a common form of bullying associated with maladaptive eating, and poor weight-related health. Although sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth experience a number of eating and weight-related health disparities, the link between WBV and these outcomes has not been investigated in this vulnerable population. Data came from the LGBTQ Teen Study, a national survey of SGM adolescents. Participants provided data to assess body mass index (BMI), WBV, sexual identity, gender identity, dieting, binge eating, eating to cope with stress, weight control behaviors, exerc

The association between alexithymia and eating behavior in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Alexithymia, or the difficulty identifying or describing one's own emotions, may be a risk factor for dysregulated eating and excess weight gain. However, the relationships between alexithymia and eating behaviors in community samples of non-clinical youth have not been well-characterized. We hypothesized that alexithymia would be positively associated with disordered and disinhibited eating in a community-based sample of boys and girls without an eating disorder. METHOD: Two hundred children (8-17 years old) across the weight spectrum completed an interview to assess loss of contr

The role of sensory sensitivity in predicting food selectivity and food preferences in children with Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by involuntary, repetitive and non-rhythmic motor and vocal tics. Despite suggestion that diet may affect tics, and the substantial research into children's diet, eating behaviours and sensory processing in comorbid disorders (e.g. ASD), research in TS is lacking. The present study examined differences between children with and without TS in parental reports of child selective eating, food preferences and sensitivity, and aimed to examine sensory sensitivity as a predictor of food selectivity outcomes in children with and wi

Emotion regulation across eating pathology: A meta-analysis.

The goal of this meta-analysis was to examine the associations between specific emotion regulation abilities (emotional awareness, emotional clarity) and strategies (acceptance of emotions, reappraisal, problem-solving, rumination, avoidance of emotions, and suppression), and eating pathology. A total of 96 studies and 239 effect sizes were included in the analysis. Relations between global and specific emotion regulation abilities and strategies and eating disorders and eating-related symptoms were examined. Results indicated medium-to-large effect sizes for the associations between adaptive

Self-reported eating behaviors of military recruits are associated with body mass index at military accession and change during initial military training.

Eating behaviors such as eating fast and ignoring internal satiety cues are associated with overweight/obesity, and may be influenced by environmental factors. This study examined changes in those behaviors, and associations between those behaviors and BMI, cardiometabolic biomarkers, and diet quality in military recruits before and during initial military training (IMT), an environment wherein access to food is restricted. Eating rate and reliance on internal satiety cues were self-reported, and BMI, body fat, cardiometabolic biomarkers, and diet quality were measured in 1389 Army, Air Force

Food trust in low trust environments. Negotiating food trust in belgian prisons.

This article examines how food trust is negotiated in Belgian penitentiaries. The study of food trust in prison, provides a particular context where the process can be understood in a low trust environment, and framed within a wider debate about food trust that has focused predominantly on how confidence is constructed in the context of outside society. A qualitative study, based on 60 in-depth interviews conducted with prisoners (41) and prison staff (19) and participant observations in prison kitchens, was carried out in five Belgian prisons. The findings show first, that trust in prisoners

Is food more than a means of survival? An overview of the Balkan prison systems.

Food is a versatile national, social, and cultural marker. It represents more than just a means of survival (Stajcic, 2013); it is an expression of identity (Jones, 2017). Food has a symbolic power and carries a sense of community, relays customs, habits, and values. According to Godderis (2006), people "do" food. In institutional settings, such as prisons, often stripped of basic human rights and dignity, food can acquire yet another dimensions. It can become a means to pass time, regain normalcy, and cope with daily hardships. Despite its multifaceted importance, there is a paucity of resear

Food refusal as a protest tool. Hunger strikes in Belgian prisons during the interwar period.

In studies on resistance and protest, empirical research tends to concentrate on collective forms of action, those organised within social movements or by resistance groups. As such, research into the protest tactic of hunger strikes suffers from the same ailment. While there is ample historical study into hunger strikes by the suffragettes or the IRA, the actions of individuals without any connection to political movements have mostly been left unnoticed - although they tended to outnumber the former, especially in prisons where hunger strikes are in a way a measure of last resort. This paper

Introduction: Prison foodways. International and multidisciplinary perspectives.

The role of prison food for those in custody has long been either underestimated, or a narrow subject approached from the vantage point of nutritionists. This special issue on prison food, tackles extant knowledge gaps by highlighting the scope of interdisciplinary scholarship, and studies of prison foodways that operate at the intersection of several disciplines. As an introduction to this special issue, we highlight the symbolic role of food as an underestimated feature of the prison environment. For many prisoners, the restrictive detention conditions give food a greater significance than i

Parents' cooking skills confidence reduce children's consumption of ultra-processed foods.

Ultra-processed foods are industrial formulations requiring little if any preparation before consumption. Their consumption is increasing in many countries and one of the possible determinants is the decrease in home cooking. As parents are key for family meals, we analysed the influence of parents' cooking skills confidence on children's consumption of ultra-processed foods at dinner. This is a cross-sectional study with 657 child-parent pairs from nine private schools in São Paulo, Brazil. Food consumption data were collected using two children's dinner dietary recalls while the Cooking Skil

Making time for food when 'doing time'; how enhanced status prisoners counter the indignity of prison foodways.

In contemporary neo-liberal societies, forms of responsible individualism and approaches to everyday foodways that reify healthy home-cooked food prepared from scratch, eaten together around a table are imbued with high cultural capital. What are the implications of this for criminalised individuals incarcerated in a prison system in England and Wales, that works with extremely low budgets, makes heavy use of pre-packaged convenience food and serves food to prisoners in their cells? Indeed, findings from Her Majesty's Inspectorate for Prison Report on food (2016:13), claims that 'the quantity

Investigating the association between stress. Anxiety and geophagy among pregnant women in mwanza, Tanzania.

Geophagy, the craving and intentional consumption of soil, is common especially among pregnant women in some low- and middle-income settings. Soils may contain a variety of non-nutritive components such as heavy metals and microbes or substances that interfere with gastrointestinal absorptive processes, posing health risks to pregnant women. Several hypotheses regarding the practice have been proposed but very few have examined the role of maternal stress. The practice of geophagy may help to alleviate stress or anxiety during gestation from perceived dietary or other pregnancy-related concern

Intragastric preloads of l-tryptophan reduce ingestive behavior via oxytocinergic neural mechanisms in male mice.

Human and laboratory animal studies suggest that dietary supplementation of a free essential amino acid, l-tryptophan (TRP), reduces food intake. It is unclear whether an acute gastric preload of TRP decreases consumption and whether central mechanisms underlie TRP-driven hypophagia. We examined the effect of TRP administered via intragastric gavage on energy- and palatability-induced feeding in mice. We sought to identify central mechanisms through which TRP suppresses appetite. Effects of TRP on consumption of energy-dense and energy-dilute tastants were established in mice stimulated to eat

Sensory sensitivity mediates the relationship between anxiety and picky eating in children/ adolescents ages 8-17, and in college undergraduates: A replication and age-upward extension.

This study explores the relationships among anxiety, sensitivity to sensory stimuli, and picky eating (PE). An earlier study in 95 children ages 5-10 found that sensory sensitivity fully mediated the relationship between anxiety and picky eating. We replicated this finding in a sample of 158 children, ages 8-17, and in 813 young adult college students. As in the previous child sample, the relationship between anxiety and picky eating appears to be mediated by sensory sensitivity. This relationship extends into adolescence and young adulthood and holds even in a sample of children with obsessiv

Cost-based anorexia: A novel framework to model anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder that is thought to emerge through biological predisposition(s) within sociocultural context(s). Practical and ethical concerns limit study of the etiology of this disorder in humans, and in particular the biological aspects. Laboratory animal models have a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the neurobiological, physiological and behavioral aspects of this disorder, and developing new treatment strategies. One shortcoming of animal models, including activity based anorexia (ABA) in rodents, is that they cannot fully capture the contextual
