Early Psychological and Social Factors Explain the Recovery Trajectory After Distal Radial Fracture.

BACKGROUND: This prospective study identified the association of demographic, injury, psychological, and social variables, measured early during recovery, with limitations in function (measured by the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Upper Extremity Physical Function Computer Adaptive Test [PROMIS UE]) at 6 to 9 months after a distal radial fracture. Additionally, we assessed variables associated with the PROMIS UE; the abbreviated version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire (QuickDASH); the Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE); and the 3-Le

Cardio-protective effects of pentraxin 3 produced from bone marrow-derived cells against ischemia/reperfusion injury.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is one of major mechanisms contributing to the pathogenesis of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Pentraxin 3 (PTX3), produced in response to inflammatory signals, acts as a humoral arm of the innate immunity. Here we investigated the role of PTX3 produced from bone marrow-derived cells in myocardial I/R injury using PTX3-deficient (PTX3KO) mice. METHODS AND RESULTS: PTX3KO mice and wild-type littermate (WT) mice were lethally irradiated and injected with bone marrow (BM) cells, generating four types of mice (WT(WT-BM), WT(PTX3KO-BM), PTX3KO(WT-BM) and PTX3

Swing traction versus no-traction for complex intra-articular proximal inter-phalangeal fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Traction orthoses are thought to optimize recovery from intra-articular finger fractures by restoring joint space and allowing early motion. Evidence to date has, however, consisted only of case series. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To compare swing traction versus no-traction management of complex fractures of proximal inter-phalangeal (PIP) finger joints. We hypothesized that there is no long-term (i.e. >12 month) difference between swing traction and no-traction (with or without surgical fixation) in terms of motion, pain, function, patient satisfaction, or treatment cost. METHODS:

The Knee Arthroplasty versus Joint Distraction Study for Osteoarthritis (KARDS): lessons learnt from an internal pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with symptoms of pain and restricted function related to knee osteoarthritis are typically offered a knee replacement. However, a proportion remain dissatisfied with their outcomes, and the failure risk is disproportionately higher in the young. Knee joint distraction may be an intervention to postpone the time to knee replacement in this patient population. OBJECTIVE AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The primary objective of the Knee Arthroplasty versus Joint Distraction Study for Osteoarthritis (KARDS) was to evaluate the effectiveness of knee joint distraction compared to knee

Most Military Runners Report Recent Changes in Running Parameters Before Lower Limb Injury Onset.

INTRODUCTION: While running is a popular activity because of the health and fitness benefits it provides, the yearly incidence of running-related injuries (RRI) is high across all populations of runners, including military members. The etiology of RRI is multifactorial, and despite the numerous studies on risk factors for RRI, there is no clear consensus in the literature on the relative contribution of several intrinsic or extrinsic risk factors to the development of RRI. Furthermore, little is known on RRI profile and running parameters among Canadian military members. The objectives of this

Injury of the lacrimal component of the nervus intermedius function after radiosurgery versus microsurgery.

RATIONALE: Due to the synergetic role of the facial nerve and the nervus intermedius in the mechanical protection of the eye, vestibular schwannomas (VS) and/or their treatment are dangerous for the visual function. Our goal was to evaluate and compare the impact of the tumor itself, and the microsurgery (MS) or radiosurgery (RS). MATERIAL AND METHOD: A functional questionnaire evaluating among other items the patient's complaints related to the eye was addressed to a series of 100 patients, 3 years after GKS of a previously unresected unilateral VS. Answers were compared with those of a grou

The Drp1-CoQ10-Coa6-ETC axis represents a therapeutic potential for working memory impairment caused by neuronal mitochondrial dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a key mitochondrial electron carrier and a widely used dietary supplement with potential neurological benefits. However, the mechanisms underlying its effect in ameliorating memory deficits caused by cerebellar injury are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of long-term CoQ10 supplementation on working memory and the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: Network pharmacology analysis was used to identify genetic targets of CoQ10 in cerebellar injury-related cognitive impairment. Purkinje cell (PC)-specific Drp1-deficient mice (PC-Drp1

Comparative evaluation of hook plate and tension band wiring in the management of acromioclavicular dislocation: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is located between the lateral end of the clavicle and the medial part of the acromion. The joint capsule is reinforced by a strong system of ligaments, and there is a fibrocartilaginous disc between the two bony surfaces. The AC joint dislocation (ACD) is a fairly common shoulder girdle injury, which is seen in about 9-12% of active adults. The aim of this study was to perform a comparative descriptive evaluation of two commonly used surgical techniques - tension band wiring (TBW) and hook plate (HP) fixation - for the treatment of acute AC disloca

Additive effect of tDCS and neuromotor recruitment on functional recovery in chronic paraplegia: A randomized controlled trial.

Functional recovery in chronic spinal cord injury (SCI) is traditionally viewed as limited, particularly after the spontaneous recovery window has closed. This single-blind randomized controlled trial investigated whether adding anodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) to the Neuromotor Recruitment Method (NEUROM)-a protocol combining motor imagery with intensive peripheral sensory stimulation-provides a additive benefit for sensorimotor recovery. Fifty participants with chronic paraplegia (mean time since injury: 15.4 ± 3.2 months; ASIA Impairment Scale A, B, or C) were recruited
