Toxoplasma gondii is an extremely sucessfull protozoal parasite which infects almost all mamalian species including humans. Approximately 30% of the human population worldwide is chronically infected with T. gondii. In general, human infection is asymptomatic but the parasite may induce severe disease in fetuses and immunocompromised patients. In addition, T. gondii may cause sight-threatening posterior uveitis in immunocompetent patients. Apart from few exceptions, humans acquire T. gondii from animals. Both, the oral uptake of T. gondii oocysts released by specific hosts, i.e. felidae, and o

Cryptosporidium in farm rabbits is not often recognised due to a low prevalence and asymptomatic course of infection. Nonetheless, incidences of fatal diarrhoeic diseases are frequently noticed in the rabbitries. In this article, we report an outbreak where there was massive mortality among farm rabbits associated with Cryptosporidium infection. The disease was characterised by profuse diarrhoea resulting in the death of rabbits. A pooled faecal sample was screened for a presence of parasites using microscopy methods. In the tested sample no other parasites other than Cryptosporidium oocysts w

Dengue disease is a mosquito-borne viral disease of expanding geographical range and incidence. Infection by one of the four serotypes of dengue virus induces a spectrum of disease manifestations, ranging from asymptomatic to life-threatening Dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome. Many efforts have been made to elucidate several aspects of dengue virus-induced disease, but the pathogenesis of disease is complex and remains unclear. Understanding the mechanisms involved in the early stages of infection is crucial to determine and develop safe therapeutics to prevent the severe outcomes

Here, we describe a Japanese woman showing a monoclonal expansion of EBV-infected natural killer (NK) cells after receiving allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT). The patient initially had T-cell-type chronic active EBV disease (CAEBV) and subsequently developed liver T-cell lymphoma. L-Asparaginase-containing chemotherapy led to a favorable lymphoma response. To eradicate CAEBV and the lymphoma, she further received allogeneic PBSCT from a human leukocyte antigen-matched sibling donor. After the PBSCT, the patient presented with transient lymphocytosis of NK cells, whi

Viral infections can lead to myocardial inflammation, resulting in acute myocarditis. Acute myocarditis is mostly self-limiting, but it can lead to severe dilated cardiomyopathy and rarely to acute cardiac tamponade. We report a rare case of myocarditis in a young immunocompentent male patient due to a recent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The clinical presentation was an influenza-like syndrome, classical for a CMV infection, in combination with mild chest pain. Further exploration showed inflammation-compatible perimyocardial images on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Following the sympto

In this study, we investigated in dogs the immunogenicity and protective immunity against Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi infection induced by vaccination with a formulation containing the recombinant A2 protein, an amastigote specific antigen, and saponin. Vaccinated animals produced significantly increased levels of total IgG and IgG2, but not IgG1 anti-A2 antibodies, and remained negative in conventional leishmaniasis serodiagnostic methods. Significantly increased IFN-gamma and low IL-10 levels were detected in vaccinated animals before and after challenge, as compared to control animals.

Gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (HAT, sleeping sickness) is widely assumed to be 100% pathogenic and fatal. However, reports to the contrary exist, and human trypano-tolerance has been postulated. Furthermore, there is uncertainty about the actual duration of both stage 1 and stage 2 infection, particularly with respect to how long a patient remains infectious. Understanding such basic parameters of HAT infection is essential for optimising control strategies based on case detection. We considered the potential existence and relevance of human trypano-tolerance, and explored the durati

Dengue infection, one of the most devastating mosquito-borne viral diseases in humans, is now a significant problem in several tropical countries. The disease, caused by the four dengue virus serotypes, ranges from asymptomatic infection to undifferentiated fever, dengue fever (DF), and severe dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) with or without shock. DHF is characterized by fever, bleeding diathesis and a tendency to develop a potentially fatal shock syndrome. Consistent hematological findings include vasculopathy, coagulopathy, and thrombocytopenia. There are increasing reports of dengue infectio

A unique feature of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is its ability to exist in the granuloma of an asymptomatic host in a latent state that can subsequently reactivate to cause active disease. The latent state of infection poses a major obstacle to eradicating tuberculosis. In latent tuberculosis, the host immune response is capable of controlling the infection and yet falls short of eradicating the pathogen. That the host immune response contributes to the maintenance of latent tuberculous infection is supported by the observation that certain immunodeficient states, including those associated wit

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) struck Hong Kong bitterly in the spring of 2003, infecting 1755 persons and claiming nearly 300 lives. The epidemic was introduced by travellers from southern China, where the disease had originated. It started in late February and lasted until early June. Two notable 'super-spreading' events were reported, one inside a teaching hospital and the other in a private housing estate. Other than in the super-spreading events, the infectivity in the community appeared to be low, and there were few, if any, asymptomatic or subclinical infections. Health-care w

The fear of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and disease transmission from patients to health care professionals or health care professional to patients is real. Perioperative nurses and other surgical personnel should be aware of the dangers and risks of exposure to these viruses. Patients may be infected with one of the currently recognized bloodborne viruses including Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV) and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It is imperative that accidental exposure during surgical procedures be avoided. The most common means of exposure are percutaneous and mucous me

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify clinical signs and symptoms associated with detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in the female genital tract.
STUDY DESIGN: A total of 516 university students (18 to 24 years old) enrolled in a cohort study that included the collection of genital specimens for HPV DNA testing every 4 months for up to 4 years. Reported symptoms and objective clinical findings of women with and without HPV DNA were compared by multivariate analysis.
RESULTS: Acute and persisting HPV infections were not associated with discharge, itching, burning, sore

Bartonella bacilliformis has caused debilitating illness since pre-Incan times, but relatively little is known about its epidemiology. A population-based, prospective cohort investigation was conducted in a Peruvian community with endemic bartonellosis. By use of house-to-house and hospital surveillance methods, cohort participants were monitored for evidence of bartonellosis. Of 690 participants, 0.5% had asymptomatic bacteremia at study initiation. After 2 years of follow-up, the incidence of infection was 12.7/100 person-years. The highest rates were in children <5 years old, and there was

In order to improve the prevention of cases of congenital rubella syndrome in The Netherlands, in 1987 the selective vaccination strategy against rubella infection in girls was replaced by mass vaccination. This decision was supported by mathematical model analyses carried out by Van Druten and De Boo. In order to compare the predicted impact of the rubella vaccination programme with the current available data in more detail, a similar model was built. Although the model predicts elimination of the rubella virus, data show that virus circulation is still present at a higher level than expected

INTRODUCTION: Male genital infection by human papillomavirus is of particular importance since it is often asymptomatic. The patient generally presents no clinical lesion. Therefore, men represent an important reservoir of virus, playing a special role in the transmission and perpetuation of the disease.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In the present prospective clinical trial study, 190 sex partners of women with genital infection by human papillomavirus, associated or not with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, were investigated. All patients were unaware of or denied the presence of a genital lesio

In Thailand, the prevalence of paediatric HIV-1 infection has increased rapidly through vertical transmission. According to the ACTG 076 trial regimen, zidovudine treatment in HIV-infected pregnancy can reduce vertical transmission. However, this treatment is complex and costly. It is not applicable for developing countries. We conducted a study to evaluate the effect of zidovudine treatment in late pregnancy on HIV-1 in utero transmission. Fifty cases of asymptomatic HIV-1 infected-women were voluntarily enrolled to the study. Zidovudine 250 mg orally twice a day was given to these patients f

During an ongoing study investigating the impact of maternal HIV infection on pregnancy outcome at a large maternity hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, asymptomatic HIV positive women who had recently delivered were informed of their HIV sero-status and counselled by a trained nurse regarding contraception and reproductive behaviour in a single session. Both HIV infected women and a comparison group of uninfected women matched for pregnancy outcome were followed up after an interval of one year. Contraceptive use, condom use and pregnancy rates were similar in both groups. Only 37% of HIV infected wo

The value of beta 2-microglobulin and neopterin concentrations in serum for early diagnosis of infants born to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-infected mothers was assessed. Concentrations of both markers were measured in serum samples from pediatric patients (Centers for Disease Control classifications P0, P1, and P2), as well as in age-matched normal subjects. Both beta 2-microglobulin and neopterin were significantly increased in HIV-1-infected symptomatic subjects (P2) compared to controls. Seventy-five percent of asymptomatic patients (P1) also had increased values. On the oth

Chlamydial infection is an important cause of genital tract disease in women and is often silent. Collection, storage and transportation of specimens required for culture pose problems which have made studies difficult and diagnosis impractical outside hospitals or sexually transmitted disease clinics. The direct monoclonal antibody test (MicroTrak, Syva) for detecting chlamydiae is comparable with the traditional culture method in sensitivity and specificity. The test requires only the preparation of a smear on a slide, making it convenient for use in general practice. The feasibility of using

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes serious illness in immunocompromised patients and congenitally infected neonates. Knowledge of the epidemiologic characteristics of CMV remains limited, but specific and practical measures can help prevent the transmission of infection to persons in high-risk groups. Good personal hygiene, especially hand washing, is the most effective means of preventing the acquisition of CMV by pregnant women and by individuals who care for children and immunocompromised patients. Screening programs for the identification of seronegative pregnant women and female hospital employ
