Associations between sexually transmitted disease diagnosis and subsequent sexual risk and sexually transmitted disease incidence among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Empiric evidence is lacking in regard to the subsequent sexually transmitted disease (STD)-associated risk behaviors of adolescents diagnosed and treated for an STD. GOAL: The goal of this study was to prospectively identify associations between STD diagnosis and subsequent sexual risk and STD incidence among a sample of U.S. adolescents. STUDY DESIGN: A cohort of 455 adolescents (age 15-21 years) was followed for 3 months. Adolescents were recruited from primary care clinics and through outreach activities. RESULTS: A total of 10.8% were initially diagnosed with at least one ST

Risk factors for early hospital readmission in patients with AIDS and pneumonia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine risk factors for early readmission to the hospital in patients with AIDS and pneumonia. DESIGN: Case-control analysis. SETTING: A municipal teaching hospital serving an indigent population. PATIENTS: Case patients were all AIDS patients hospitalized with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia or bacterial pneumonia between January 1992 and March 1995 who were readmitted for any nonelective reason within 2 weeks of discharge (n = 90). Control patients were randomly selected AIDS patients admitted during the study period who were not early readmissions (n = 87), matched by pro

Study on thermal adaptation behaviors of bus passengers.

Thermal comfort (TC) inside buses has always been a key consideration for passengers when traveling. Although numerous studies and policies have explored and guided air conditioning standards for buses, research on passengers' thermal adaptation behaviors remains scarce-particularly in the context of widespread dissatisfaction with the thermal environment on buses. In this study, we adopted a mixed-methods approach and developed a new integrated research model to investigate passengers' thermal adaptation behaviors and their influencing factors. By constructing a theoretical framework for bus

Understanding Dysregulated Behaviors and Compulsions: An Extension of the Emotional Cascade Model and the Mediating Role of Intrusive Thoughts.

OBJECTIVE: The Emotional Cascade Model (ECM) by Selby et al. (2008) proposes that people often engage in dysregulated behaviors to end extreme, aversive emotional states triggered by a self-perpetuating vicious cycle of (excessive) rumination, negative affect, and attempts to suppress negative thoughts. METHOD: Besides replicating the ECM, we introduced intrusions as a mediator between rumination and behavioral dysregulation and tested this extended ECM for compulsions as part of obsessive-compulsive disorders. A structural equation modeling approach was used to test this in a sample of N = 4

Health Risk Behaviors by Length of Time in the United States Among High School Students in Five Sites.

One in five public school students is from an immigrant-headed household. We used Youth Risk Behavior Survey data from one state and four large urban school districts to examine whether length of time living in the US was associated with health risk behaviors. Logistic regression models, using weighted data, controlled for sex, race/ethnicity, and grade. Compared to US natives, not having always lived in the US was correlated with lower risk for some behaviors (e.g., current marijuana use and alcohol use) among high school students, but higher risk for other behaviors (e.g., attempted suicide,

Frontostriatal circuits and the development of bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is characterized by both recurrent episodes of binge eating that are, in part, defined by a sense of loss of control and compensatory behaviors to avoid weight gain. Impulsive behaviors are also common in individuals with BN, indicating more pervasive difficulties in behavioral self-regulation. Findings from functional and anatomical neuroimaging studies of individuals with BN suggest dysfunction in the dorsal frontostriatal circuits that support self-regulatory capacities and habit learning and in overlapping ventral circuits that support reward processing and reward-base

Diversification of takeout, a male-biased gene family in Drosophila.

The display of courtship behavior has evolved in response to sexual selection driven by competition to obtain mates. Sexually dimorphic mate selection rituals are likely controlled at least in part by genes with sex-biased patterns of expression. In Drosophila melanogaster, male courtship behavior has been well described and consists of a series of stereotyped behaviors. The takeout gene is predominantly expressed in males and affects male courtship behavior. In this study, we examine the patterns of expression and evolution in takeout and the family of related proteins. We show that a number

The role of formative research in the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System.

The National Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) newest system for measuring HIV risk behaviors among three adult populations at highest risk for HIV infection in the U.S.: men who have sex with men, injecting drug users, and heterosexuals at risk of HIV infection. The system is implemented by state and local health departments in designated metropolitan statistical areas with the highest HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) prevalence in the U.S. Prior to implementing the behavioral surve

Pathways to risk among inner-city African-American adolescent females: the influence of gang membership.

Differential rates of participation in three categories of risk behaviors (i.e., sexual activity, substance use, violence) were explored, comparing gang members to nonmembers, within a sample of 1,143 inner-city African American adolescent females. The relationship between gang membership and risk behavior also was examined, by exploring the association between a variety of microsystemic influences (e.g., gang, family, school) and participation in risk behaviors. MANOVA analyses indicated that gang members, relative to nonmembers, reported higher rates of participation in each of the three cat

Eating disorder behaviors of ethnically diverse urban female adolescent athletes and non-athletes.

This study compared Caucasian, Hispanic, and African-American urban adolescent athlete and non-athlete females for relative frequency of behavioral and psychological indices of eating disorders, while controlling for physical size. High school female athletes (n=571) and non-athletes (n=463) completed the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) composed of eight subscales that measure behavioral and psychological indices common in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The MANCOVA for the main effect of ethnicity showed Caucasians and Hispanics scored significantly higher than African-Americans on six

Effects of a skin refrigerant/anesthetic and age on the pain responses of infants receiving immunizations.

Although pain management is an important nursing responsibility, few interventions for minimizing distress of infants during painful procedures have been studied. Sixty infants, 2 through 6 months of age, were studied during a routine DPT immunization in order to examine (a) the effectiveness of cooling the skin in reducing distress behaviors and (b) the relationship between age and distress behavior. Infants were randomly assigned to experimental or control groups. Prior to the injection, the sites were sprayed for 2 to 3 s with either a skin refrigerant/anesthetic or compressed air. Behavior

Timeliness in canine rabies outbreak report and response.

INTRODUCTION: Timely response to zoonotic disease outbreaks is crucial to minimizing their impact on the health and wellbeing of people and animals. Monitoring and improving the speed of response, using established outbreak milestones and timeliness metrics, is key to preventing further spread. Despite training and a decade of expertise in case response, persistent delays in these processes continue to hinder effective outbreak responses. Dog-mediated rabies, a classic One Health challenge, remains a significant public health concern in many parts of the world. In Arequipa, Peru, rabies has re

Solanum macrocarpon L. Ethanolic Leaf Extract Exhibits Neuroprotective and Anxiolytic Effects in Scopolamine-Induced Amnesic Zebrafish Model.

Background/Objectives: Solanum macrocarpon L. has been studied for its neuroprotective potential and memory-enhancing properties. Research suggests that bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, alkaloids, and phenolics, contribute to its cognitive benefits. These compounds may help protect against oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cholinergic dysfunction factors in memory impairment. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of S. macrocarpon ethanolic leaf extract (SMEE) on the memory, anxiety-like behavior, and brain antioxidant status of scopolamine (SCOP, 100 μM)-induce

Exploring the Psychological Effects and Physical Exertion of Using Different Movement Interactions in Casual Exergames That Promote Active Microbreaks: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged sedentary behavior, such as sitting or reclining, has consistently been identified as a stand-alone risk factor for heightened cardiometabolic risk and overall mortality. Conversely, interrupting sedentary periods by incorporating short, active microbreaks has been shown to mitigate the negative effects of sedentary behavior. Casual exergames, which mix elements of casual gaming with physical activity, are one prospective intervention to reduce sedentary behavior because they require physical exertion. Casual exergames have shown promise in fostering emotional and physica

High-Density Electromyography Provides Improved Understanding of Muscle Function for Those With Amputation.

Transtibial amputation can significantly impact an individual's quality of life including the completion of activities of daily living. Those with lower limb amputations can harness the electrical activity from their amputated limb muscles for myoelectric control of a powered prosthesis. While these devices use residual muscles from transtibial-amputated limb as an input to the controller, there is little research characterizing the changes in surface electromyography (sEMG) signal generated by the upper leg muscles. Traditional surface EMG is limited in the number of electrode sites while hig

Reduction of depression-like behavior in rat model induced by ShRNA targeting norepinephrine transporter in locus coeruleus.

Depression may be associated with reduced monoamine neurotransmission, particularly serotonin and norepinephrine (NE). Reuptake of NE by the norepinephrine transporter (NET) is the primary mechanism by which many of the antidepressants are high-affinity substrates for NET. This study aimed to examine the effect of lentivirus-mediated shRNA targeting NET in locus coeruleus (LC) on depression-like behaviors of rats. We randomly assigned 60 male Wistar rats to 6 experimental groups: (1) Control group: without chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) and without NET-shRNA treatment; (2) shRNA grou
