Impact of psychological treatment in freezing of gait: A pilot study.

UNLABELLED: One common gait issue associated with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) is freezing of gait (FoG). FoG impacts approximately half of people with PD and negatively impacts quality of life. Studies have suggested that anxiety may contribute to FoG. Individuals with FoG exhibit higher rates of anxiety, but it is unclear if anxiety contributes to FoG development. No known studies have assessed the impact of treating anxiety to improve FoG symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study evaluated the efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) training in reducing anxiety and improving gait i

Reported Symptoms in Prodromal and Early Motor Parkinson's Disease: A Scoping Review on the Patient Perspective.

BACKGROUND: The lived experience of Parkinson's disease (PD) includes motor and non-motor symptoms. There is a need to capture the earliest patient experiences in a sensitive and reliable manner for the successful development of interventions that may delay clinical progression in PD. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to synthesize published literature about patient-reported symptoms in prodromal and early motor stages of PD and develop a conceptual framework of the earliest lived experiences in PD. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of the published literature in MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and CINAH

Educational attainment and cognitive behavioral therapy treatment outcome in late-life depression: A secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial.

AIM: The aim of this study is to investigate the association of different levels of educational attainment with the impact of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Late-Life Depression (LLD-CBT) compared to a supportive unspecific intervention (SUI). METHODS: A secondary analysis of the multicenter, randomized controlled trial "CBTlate" was conducted with n = 229 participants aged 60 years and older with moderate to severe depression who received either LLD-CBT (n = 115) or SUI (n = 114). Depressive symptoms as outcome were assessed with the 30-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Educational at

Trends in HIV Testing Among Adults in the Deep South: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2017-2023.

HIV testing is an entry point for both HIV prevention and treatment, and the CDC recommends that all adults of reproductive age undergo HIV testing at least once in their lifetime. However, HIV testing rates remain suboptimal. This study analyzed trends in HIV testing using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data from 2017 to 2023 across nine Deep South states-Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. Descriptive statistics and Joinpoint linear regression were employed to assess lifetime HIV testing and testing within the p

Targeted neuromodulation of the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex alleviates altered affective response evaluation in lonely individuals.

Loneliness has been suggested to be linked to increased bottom-up appraisal processes of social threat coupled with top-down emotion regulation mechanisms. We have recently found a partial confirmation for such mechanisms in our large scale study (Mąka et al., in press), thus, in this preregistered double-blind study, we tested the effects of noninvasive brain stimulation over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) on emotional response and regulation in lonely individuals. 120 individuals received active (2 mA) or sham transcranial direct current stimulation over the left or right dlPFC i

Comparative Analysis of Phenotypic and Genotypic Differences Between Individuals Affected by Regressive and Non-Regressive Autism: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Development among autistic youth varies widely. A subgroup of children experiences regression, defined as the loss of previously acquired developmental skills. Various genetic and environmental factors have been suggested as potential contributors. This study aimed to compare the developmental profiles of children and youth with regression to those without and identify factors associated with regression. Data from the Province of Ontario Neurodevelopmental Disorders (POND) Network was analyzed, including 930 eligible participants. Regression classification was based on the Autism Diagnostic In

The novel synthesized naltrexone-related MOR antagonist AT-99 counteracts dopamine releasing and behavioral depressant morphine-induced effects.

The development of new μ-opioid receptor (MOR) antagonists has been stimulated by the opioid overdose crisis. Our earlier in silico investigations on ligand-MOR receptor interactions indicated that the ligand cis-equatorial conformation of the amine and phenol is the most likely orientation observed within the MOR receptor. Here, we synthesized and characterized AT-99 [3-(1,3-dimethyl-cis-5-(methyl(phenethyl)amino)cyclohexyl)phenol] as a new in vivo and in vitro MOR antagonist. AT-99 effectively blocked MOR-mediated G protein activation by the agonists fentanyl and DAMGO, similarly to the refe

Sleep disturbance is associated with worsening quality of life in patients with multiple system atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by parkinsonism, cerebellar ataxia, autonomic dysfunction, and sleep disturbances, such as rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD). The association between sleep disturbances, including RBD, and decreased quality of life (QOL) in patients with MSA has not been elucidated. We aimed, therefore, to evaluate this association in individuals with MSA. METHODS: We assessed a total of 34 patients with MSA (44.1 % male; 61.8 % MSA with predominant cerebellar ataxia) for sleep disturbances, RBD,

Clinical Significance of Psychiatric Comorbidities Among Outpatients With Gambling Disorder in Japan: A 12-Month Follow-Up Study.

BACKGROUND: Gambling disorder (GD) is often comorbid with other psychiatric disorders. Previous studies have reported that psychiatric comorbidity increases both treatment dropout and relapse among patients with GD. However, little is known about the effects of comorbidity among outpatients with GD either during or after treatment. This study examined this issue in a clinical setting. METHOD: 60 outpatients with GD (men/women, 58/2; average age, 37.9 years) participated in assessments of the course of multidimensional treatment outcomes (i.e., gambling-related variables, social impairment, an

Mapping of critical prosodic and phonetic networks in post-stroke apraxia of speech.

PURPOSE: Many have made proposals to better diagnose and/or classify post-stroke apraxia of speech (AOS), with some arguing for the separation of AOS into behavioral subtypes. Recent studies of primary progressive AOS have promoted a separation of prosodic and phonetic subtypes, aligning with a dual-motor coordination model separating the neural substrates of prosodic and phonetic function. Motivated by the limited corroboration of these subtypes in post-stroke AOS, here we present mapping results in a cohort of stroke survivors aiming to identify distinct neural substrates for prosodic and ph

Long-term prophylactic treatment preferences and willingness to switch therapy in individuals with hereditary angioedema.

BACKGROUND: Long-term prophylaxis (LTP) can help manage hereditary angioedema (HAE). With increasing LTP treatment options, understanding patients' preferences is important for shared decision-making. OBJECTIVE: To understand the way individuals with HAE assess the importance of LTP treatment attributes, their LTP treatment preferences, and the impact of disease and treatment attributes on their willingness to switch LTP. METHODS: We conducted an online survey in 2023 among US adults (aged ≥18 years) self-reporting an HAE diagnosis and receiving treatment (LTP, on-demand, or both) or experie

Is tobacco dependence a moderator of psychiatric symptom severity and caregiver abuse in rural families of patients with severe mental disorders?

BACKGROUND: Severe mental disorders (SMDs) impose profound suffering on patients and heavy burdens on family caregivers, often resulting in abusive behaviors. This study aimed to examine the association between psychiatric symptom severity and caregiver abuse, and to assess whether caregiver tobacco dependence moderates this relationship. METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 763 patient-caregiver dyads in rural Shandong, China. Psychiatric symptom severity was measured using the 18-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. Caregiver tobacco dependence was assessed using the Fagerström Test fo
