Neoadjuvant Therapy in Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer-What Result Should We Expect?

Background and Objectives: Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy is a key component of the treatment strategy for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC), both through its direct impact on oncological prognosis and by increasing the likelihood of sphincter-preserving surgery. Oncological prognosis improves dramatically following a complete pathological response to neoadjuvant therapy. Identifying predictors of response to neoadjuvant therapy has been a challenge over the past two decades, and these factors have not been fully identified. This study aimed to analyze the clinical, biological, and therapeu

Advances in Drug Delivery Systems for Breast Cancer: From Microenvironment Barriers and Smart Carriers to Clinical Translation Strategies.

Breast cancer heterogeneity and its complex tumor microenvironment (TME) are key drivers of therapeutic failure and multidrug resistance (MDR). Drug delivery systems (DDS) provide an important approach, but their clinical translation remains limited by biological variability, formulation complexity, and manufacturing challenges. This review delineates the evolution of breast cancer DDS from passive carriers to increasingly functional and responsive platforms, focusing on three core dimensions. First, regarding decisive barriers, we dissect the constraints imposed by the three-dimensional colla

Biopsychosocial risk pathways to school violence in youth: a scoping review of stress reactivity, mental health outcomes, and prevention.

School violence represents a major public health and educational concern with significant consequences for adolescents' psychological well-being, academic functioning, and social development. Increasing evidence indicates that violent behaviors in school environments arise from the complex interaction between individual vulnerabilities and broader social determinants. This scoping review aims to describe and discuss the available evidence on the risk factors, mental health outcomes, and prevention strategies associated with school violence. A comprehensive literature search was conducted acros

Variable Infection Outcomes in Repeated Experimental Challenges of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) With an Infectious Salmon Anaemia Virus Isolate.

Infectious salmon anaemia (ISA) affects Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and is caused by the ISA virus (ISAV). The disease is associated with ISAV strains with deletions in the hemagglutinin-esterase protein, named HPRΔ variants. The present study was initially designed as a vaccine efficacy study against ISA. Considerable variability in mortality in virus-injected fish was observed in repeated experimental challenges using the NO/Finnmark/NVI-70-72/2020 isolate. Four independent experimental challenge trials were conducted. In two experiments, high cumulative mortality was seen in intraperitone

Association between dental age variation and EGF, EGFR, TGFB1, and TGFB2 genetic polymorphisms.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Chronological age (CA) refers to the time elapsed since birth, whereas dental age (DA) reflects biological maturation based on dental development. In clinical practice the assessment of dental development supports diagnosis and treatment planning. Understanding the biological factors involved in dental maturation is therefore essential. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether polymorphisms in specific genes encoding growth factors are associated with DA variation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study analyzed panoramic radiographs from orthodontic records of 7‑ to

Quantifying Risk Factors for Osteochondritis Dissecans in Children: A Propensity-Matched Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a developmental orthopaedic condition in pediatric patients characterized by disruption of epiphyseal cartilage vascular supply leading to secondary subchondral bone changes and potential joint degeneration. While repetitive trauma is implicated, emerging evidence suggests a contributing role of biological and hereditary risk factors. PURPOSE: To quantify the relative risk (RR) of OCD with specific biological comorbidities and athletic participation in a large representative pediatric and adolescent population. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional stud

Unraveling the genetic traits and functional diversity of the pan-genome in Pantoea dispersa.

BACKGROUND: Medical devices are crucial in modern healthcare, but commonly used clinical tools such as cotton swabs can be easily contaminated by microorganisms (such as Pantoea), becoming vectors for pathogens and leading to patient infections or more severe outcomes. Despite the dual nature of the Pantoea that has garnered significant attention, research investigating Pantoea dispersa (P. dispersa) remains limited. This study conducted a pan-genome analysis of three isolates and 57 P. dispersa strains from NCBI to investigate their evolutionary relationships, population structure, and functi

The predictive value of the global alignment and proportion (GAP) score for mechanical complications following adult spinal deformity surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical complications (MCs) remain a significant challenge in adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery. The global alignment and proportion (GAP) score, a pelvic incidence-based metric, was introduced to predict the risk of postoperative MCs by assessing the proportionality of spinopelvic alignment. METHODS: We systematically reviewed the evidence on the predictive validity of the GAP score and its modifications with regard to postoperative MCs (eg, proximal junctional kyphosis/failure, rod fracture, or implant failure) and patient-reported outcomes in adult spinal deformity (ASD)

Understanding the social determinants of Aedes-borne diseases in Iran: A qualitative exploration of challenges and policy solutions.

BACKGROUND: Aedes-borne diseases pose escalating public health challenges globally, influenced not only by ecological and biological factors but critically by social determinants of health (SDH). In Iran, emerging local transmission of dengue highlights these diseases as effective proxies to examine the impact of social and environmental factors on health equity. However, evidence on context-specific drivers and effective responses remains scarce. This study aimed to identify key SDH and propose prioritized interventions to inform evidence-based policymaking. METHODS: This mixed-method study

Sex-specific cardiac remodeling in aged rats after adolescent chronic stress: associations with endocrine and metabolic factors.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide. Rates of cardiovascular disease vary both across the lifespan and between sexes. While multiple factors, including adverse life experiences, impact the development and progression of cardiovascular disease, the potential interactions of biological sex and stress history on the aged heart are unknown. To this end, we examined sex- and stress-specific impacts on left ventricular hypertrophy (VH) after aging. We hypothesized that early-life chronic stress exposure impacts behavioral and physiologic responses that predict ca

Associations between sex and lifestyle activities with cognitive reserve in mid-life adults with genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Females have a higher age-adjusted incidence of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) than males, even when accounting for longer lifespan and, therefore, stand to benefit the most from dementia prevention efforts. As exposure to many modifiable risk factors for dementia begins in mid-life, interventions must be implemented from middle-age. Building cognitive reserve, particularly through stimulating avocational activities and occupational attainment presents a crucial, underexplored, dementia prevention approach for mid-life. It is currently unknown, however, whether modifiable lifestyle facto

Leukocyte telomere length in multiple sclerosis: relationship between disability severity and pregnancy history.

BACKGROUND: Aging-related processes contribute to neurodegeneration and disability in multiple sclerosis (MS). Biomarkers of biological aging such as leukocyte telomere length (LTL) could help personalise prognosis. Pregnancy has been shown to be protective against disability accumulation in women with MS, though it is unclear if this effect relates to aging mechanisms or LTL. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to cross-sectionally characterise LTL in a cohort of individuals with MS, and to correlate LTL with disability severity and pregnancy history. METHODS: We extracted DNA from the whole blood

Clinicians' perspectives on race-specific guidelines for hypertensive treatment.

Despite the general consensus that there is no biological basis to race, racial categorization is still used by clinicians to guide diagnosis and treatment plans for certain diseases. In medicine, race is commonly used as a rough proxy for unmeasured social, environmental, and genetic factors. The American College of Cardiology's Eighth Joint National Committee's (JNC 8) guidelines for the treatment of hypertension provide race-specific medication recommendations for Black versus non-Black patients, without strong evidence for race-specific physiological differences in drug response. Clinician

Endogenous oxytocin, cortisol, and testosterone in response to group singing.

Humans have sung together for thousands of years. Today, regular participation in group singing is associated with benefits across psychological and biological dimensions of human health. Here we examine the hypothesis that a portion of these benefits stem from changes in endocrine activity associated with affiliation and social bonding. Working with a young adult choir (n = 71), we measured changes salivary concentrations of oxytocin, cortisol, and testosterone from before and after four experimental conditions crossing two factors: vocal production mode (singing vs. speaking) and social cont

Regional and racial disparity in proximal gastric cancer survival outcomes 1996-2016: Results from SEER and China National Cancer Center database.

BACKGROUND: Given the growing incidence and aggressive biological behavior of proximal gastric cancer (PGC) as reported, it is important to understand which regional or racial populations are at poor prognosis so that interventions can be treated appropriately. We sought to explore regional treatment differences as well as racial genes influence survival outcomes in China and the US patients with PGC. METHODS: PGC patients defined as tumors with the epicenter located in cardia (C16.0) or fundus (C16.1) from 1996 to 2016 were identified from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)

Stringent Starvation Protein Regulates Prodiginine Biosynthesis via Affecting Siderophore Production in Pseudoalteromonas sp. Strain R3.

Prodiginines are a family of red-pigmented secondary metabolites with multiple biological activities. The biosynthesis of prodiginines is affected by various physiological and environmental factors. Thus, prodiginine biosynthesis regulation is highly complex and multifaceted. Although the regulatory mechanism for prodiginine biosynthesis has been extensively studied in Serratia and Streptomyces species, little is known about that in the marine betaproteobacterium Pseudoalteromonas In this study, we report that stringent starvation protein A (SspA), an RNA polymerase-associated regulatory prote
