Ultrasound elastography system for quantifying Age-Related biomechanical changes in ocular tissues.

This study reports the development and validation of an Ultrasound Elastography (USE) system designed to quantify age-related biomechanical changes in ocular tissues. Employing a commercial L22-14Vx linear array transducer coupled with a mechanical shaker system delivering 600 Hz excitation, elastic wave speed (WS) was measured in the cornea, iris, and anterior sclera. Results demonstrated that WS provides clinically relevant information for assessing tissue stiffness of specific parts of the eye, providing more detailed information about each eye structure. These findings demonstrate the feas

The effect of two types of pyramidal and reverse pyramidal loading on spine and pelvis coordination variability during deadlift.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of pyramidal and reverse pyramidal loading on spine and pelvis coordination patterns and their variability during deadlift. METHODS: Twelve trained male powerlifters performed deadlifts under two loading protocols: pyramidal (50%, 70%, 90% of 10RM) and reverse pyramidal (same loads in descending order). Segmental coordination (PL-LB, LB-LT, LT-UT) was analyzed using 3D motion capture and a modified vector coding method across concentric and eccentric phases. Coordination pattern frequencies and variability were statistically assessed using repeated-measures

Comparison of forelimb and hindlimb movements during treadmill and overground locomotion at different speeds in intact adult cats.

To evaluate locomotion, motorized treadmills have been widely used in research due to several advantages over conventional overground locomotion. Although comparisons have been made, whether locomotion is equivalent on the treadmill and overground at different speeds remains poorly understood. In the present study, we collected kinematic and electromyography (EMG) data in 10 intact adult cats at four matched speeds ranging from 0.5 m/s to 0.8 m/s during motorized treadmill and overground locomotion. During treadmill locomotion, fore- and hindlimb cycle and stance durations were longer, whereas

Cerebellar Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation: Frequency-Specific Modulation of Human Gait.

Coordinated locomotion depends on rhythmic neural interactions, with the cerebellum contributing to movement timing and scaling. However, how cerebellar oscillatory dynamics influence human gait remains unclear, despite its relevance for motor learning and rehabilitation. We hypothesized two frequency-dependent effects: (i) gait-matched cerebellar transcranial alternating current stimulation (c-tACS) would produce stronger phase alignment than sham and selectively affect temporal rather than spatial gait parameters; and (ii) higher-frequency stimulation would preferentially modulate spatial ga

The functional impact of myofiber macroscopic organization and disarray in computational models of the murine heart.

A major challenge in computational models of cardiac electromechanics is the reconstruction of myocardial fiber architecture, as direct in vivo measurements of fiber orientation are not feasible. Consequently, rule-based methods are commonly adopted as surrogates, relying on empirical descriptions of fiber organization combined with patient-specific geometries. This study investigates the respective roles of macroscopic fiber architecture and microscopic fiber disarray in cardiac electromechanical simulations. A high-fidelity biventricular electromechanical model of a murine heart was develope

Who is pulling the strings? The self-avatar follower effect in the context of involuntary movements in immersive and embodied virtual reality.

In conditions of virtual immersion, the relationship between the user and their avatar can be bidirectional: while the user usually controls the avatar, the avatar can also, under certain circumstances, influence the user's movements, a phenomenon known as the Self-Avatar Follower Effect (SAFE). Previous research has demonstrated this effect in voluntary actions, particularly where there is a mismatch between the avatar and the user. However, it remains unclear whether the SAFE extends to involuntary movements, such as those elicited by the Kohnstamm phenomenon (an involuntary arm elevation fo

Aerodynamic Demand Responses to the Fluid Interval Test for Voice: A Laryngeal Diadochokinetic Vocal Loading Task.

INTRODUCTION: Vocal loading tasks are useful for studying vocal demand responses-the unique sets of biomechanical, aerodynamic, and acoustic adaptations that speakers employ to meet the vocal demands of communication. We discuss aerodynamic demand responses to the Fluid Interval Test for Voice (FIT-V), a vocal loading task founded on resisted laryngeal diadochokinesis (LDDK), to determine how aerodynamic factors may influence LDDK performance. METHOD: Participants (N = 30) produced loud abductory LDDK (/hʌ hʌ hʌ/) for 30 min, alternating 30-s intervals of exercise and rest. Depending on the t

Coordinate-Independent Ultrasound Assessment for Complex Tissue Kinematics: A Preliminary Study on Median Nerve Mobility.

OBJECTIVE: This paper presents an ultrasound strain-divergence imaging technique, which quantifies complex tissue kinematics without being constrained by imaging coordinates. An in vivo application of the technique was demonstrated on median nerve (MN) mobility. Transverse mobility of MN, a potential biomarker for evaluating MN entrapment in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), is featured with large variations across different active gestures, individuals, and operators, so it remains inconclusive in literature. METHODS: Ultrasound data of the MN in the transverse view during active thumb and finge

Morphological-biomechanical dual-cornerstone framework: quantitative ultrasound for electrodiagnostically negative carpal tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is frequently challenging when typical clinical presentations conflict with negative electrodiagnostic (EDX) findings. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) can detect early neuropathophysiological changes that precede electrophysiological abnormalities; however, its clinical application is limited by the lack of a systematic diagnostic framework. OBJECTIVE: To construct and validate an integrative QUS diagnostic framework for patients with clinically suspected CTS but negative or inconclusive EDX results. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensiv

Whole-Epiphysis Trabecular Bone in Tamarin Limbs Suggests Effects of Leaping Distance Alongside Non-Biomechanical Factors.

OBJECTIVES: Beyond non-biomechanical factors, the trabecular architecture of long bone epiphyses variably underlies functional adaptations to locomotor behavior. A recent study, characterizing tamarin trabecular bone using traditional metrics derived from Volumes of Interest (VOIs), identified a preliminary relationship with leaping distance. We hypothesized that quantifying trabecular topological indices from whole epiphyses in the same system would enhance detection of locomotor signals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed μCT scans of humeral and tibial whole-epiphyseal trabecular bone in f

Mechanical control in dental and jaw morphogenesis and remodeling.

Tooth and maxillomandibular bone development is a synergistic process precisely and coordinately regulated by genetic programs, molecular signaling networks, and external environmental factors. Recent rapid progress in in situ biomechanical measurement techniques, cellular mechanical imaging, and molecular tracing technologies has greatly promoted research in developmental biomechanics. Accumulating evidence indicates that mechanical stimuli can be converted into biochemical signals via cellular mechanotransduction pathways, thereby modulating key cellular processes, including proliferation, d

Countermovement jump analysis: Effects of acoustic and visual stimuli on jump performance in volleyball players evaluated by inertial measurement unit.

The ability to perform maximal vertical jumps (VJs) significantly affects athletic performance in several sports, such as volleyball, with a paucity of studies investigating the effects of different sensory stimuli on VJ performance. To the best of our knowledge, no study quantitatively assessed the variations of spatial-temporal and kinetic parameters during Countermovement Jump-Free Arms (CMJ-FA) execution in different acoustic and visual conditions. The aim of the present study is to explore the effects of visual and acoustic stimuli, in conditions considered incentive and disincentive, on

Comparing the impact of hip thrust versus squat training on lower limb performance in sub-elite athletes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the effects of squat (SQ) and hip thrust (HT) training on performance in lower body athletic tasks, across different groups. A comprehensive search was conducted up to 31 May 2024, using PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Embase. SQ training was found to significantly improve vertical jump height (VJH) but greater than the HT. Neither SQ nor HT training had a significant impact on horizontal jump distance (HJD), short sprint time (SST), short sprint performance (SSP) or change of direction (COD) performance. In

Immediate effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on drop jump performance measured through kinematic analysis.

This study aimed to investigate the immediate effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on high-platform drop jump performance through kinematic analysis. Thirty healthy male physical education students were randomly recruited (15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group). The experimental group received a 20-min NMES intervention before performing the drop jump test. The Kwon3D motion analysis system was used for data processing, and the drop jump process was divided into five key phases for kinematic parameter analysis. The results showed that the jump height of the

Funnel control based on unknown system dynamics estimator for hydraulically-driven lower limb exoskeleton robot.

The hydraulically-driven lower limb exoskeleton robot (HDLLER) can enhance the motion capabilities of human lower limbs. However, due to inherent uncertainties and external human-robot coupling disturbances, it poses significant challenges to precise trajectory tracking control. Therefore, a novel funnel control (FC) strategy based on an unknown system dynamics estimator (USDE) is proposed to compensate for unknown internal and external dynamic influences, thus further improving robot performance. Firstly, the HDLLER high-order dynamic model containing human-robot coupling disturbances is tran

An active machine learning framework for automatic boxing punch recognition and classification using upper limb kinematics.

Boxing punch type classification and kinematic analysis are essential for coaches and athletes, providing critical insights into punch variety and effectiveness, which are vital for performance improvement. Existing methods for punch recognition and classification typically rely on wearable sensor data or video data; however, no fully automated system currently exists. While coaches prefer video-based analysis for its ability to easily visualize punch action errors and refine technique, video-based classification suffers from lower accuracy compared to sensor-based methods due to limitations s

Dual-Branch Deep Learning for Continuous Gait Cycle Estimation with wearable IMU Sensors and Anthropometric Data.

This study presents a CNN-LSTM model for gait cycle phase prediction using wearable IMU data and anthropometric features. A sliding window approach was applied for real-time gait estimation, with gait cycle percentage calculated via peak detection and lower limb length data. Feature selection identified key IMU-derived kinematic features, primarily joint angles, to enhance model performance. The model achieved R2 = 0.911, demonstrating high accuracy across walking conditions. These findings support IMU-based gait analysis for rehabilitation, abnormal gait detection, and prosthetic control. To
