Histopathological analysis from proximal bone samples during minor amputations for diabetes-related foot infections: A single-center, retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Minor amputations, defined as resection of bone below the ankle, are important procedures for managing diabetes-related foot infections (DFI). The optimal method to determine the presence of residual bone infection is unclear and unplanned reoperation rates are common. Although international guidelines endorse the use of histopathology, this approach has not been universally adopted. PURPOSE: We evaluated the utility of histopathological analysis from samples collected from 'proximal' or 'marginal' bone during minor amputations. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective, single-center study

Validation of an automated spinal fusion finite element modeling framework for the prediction of pedicle screw loosening.

This study aimed to validate a patient-specific biomechanical simulation pipeline for predicting pedicle screw loosening risk in posterior spinal fusion. In particular, the research questioned whether this simulation, which integrates CT-derived bone properties, musculoskeletal force data, and finite element analysis, can outperform conventional CT attenuation measurements taken in both the vertebral body and along the planned screw trajectory. We conducted a retrospective database analysis, including patients who underwent lumbar spinal fusion with preoperative and postoperative CT scans. Scr

The effects of Zoledronate administration routes on the reproducibility of BRONJ in rodent models: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a debilitating condition characterized by alveolar bone destruction associated with bisphosphonate medications, such as zoledronate. Zoledronate use is associated with an increased incidence of BRONJ. In rodent models, accurate replication of BRONJ stages depends on the route of zoledronate administration. This systematic review evaluates the reproducibility of BRONJ characteristics in rodent models by analyzing the effects of different zoledronate injection routes on clinical, histopathological, and radiological outcomes.

A retrospective comparison of hyperbaric oxygen and core decompression for mild to moderate avascular necrosis of the femoral head.

Avascular necrosis of the femoral head is a condition resulting from disrupted blood supply, leading to ischemia and bone tissue necrosis. Core decompression (CD) restores the blood supply through pressure relief, whereas hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) enhances tissue oxygenation and promotes bone repair. Their combined use may complement each other in improving blood supply, promoting bone healing, and inhibiting disease progression, thus achieving a better therapeutic effect. To assess and compare the efficacy of HBO and/or CD for treating mild to moderate femoral head avascular necrosis, a retrosp

Long term surgical results of cases with aneurysmal bone cysts-a comprehensive clinical, functional and oncologic analysis.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to analyze long-term outcomes in patients with aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) and demonstrate effective disease control. In the literature, the absence of a long-term study systematically evaluating the outcomes of a population with such a significant number of patients from different age groups will shed light on our surgical preferences. METHODS: The study encompassed ABC diagnoses, primarily concerning long bones (46 women, 62 men; mean age 19.4 years; range 2-67) extracted from patient records spanning from 2007 to 2022 in our clinic. The average follow-up was 81

Malignant melanoma bone marrow infiltration induced coagulation dysfunction and spinal epidural haematoma with paraplegia: a case report and literature review.

Malignant melanoma bone marrow infiltration induced coagulation dysfunction and spinal epidural haematoma with paraplegia is extremely rare. It typically presents as anemia, coagulation dysfunction or disseminated intravascular coagulation, immune thrombocytopenia. In severe cases, it can lead to spinal epidural hematoma, compressing the spinal cord and nerve roots, resulting in motor and sensory dysfunction, and even paraplegia. Due to the rarity and complexity of this condition, it is prone to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis, ultimately leading to a poor prognosis. This paper reports the c

Effect of melatonin as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy in the treatment of periodontitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Gingivitis is defined as the inflammation of the gums. The condition may spread to other parts of the periodontium, including the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone, and lead to bony defects. Melatonin has a positive impact on the bone healing process, a phenomenon attributable to its antioxidant properties, as well as its capacity to regulate bone cells and promote angiogenesis. The present meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of melatonin as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT) in the treatment of periodontitis. A thorough electronic search of the PubMed®/MEDLINE a

Central dentinogenic ghost cell tumor of the maxilla: a case report with new imaging findings and review of the literature.

A dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT) is a rare benign odontogenic tumor that commonly shows characteristics of solid proliferation and has a relatively high risk of recurrence after surgical treatment. We herein report a case of a central DGCT that occurred in the maxilla and resulted in bone expansion. This study highlights new imaging findings (particularly magnetic resonance imaging) along with histopathological observations. In addition, we conducted a review of the existing literature on this rare tumor. A 37-year-old man developed swelling around the right cheek. A benign odontogenic t

Men with HIV have increased alveolar bone loss.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal health in men with HIV remains understudied, despite suggestions of associations between HIV infection and gingival pocketing, periodontal attachment loss, and gingival inflammation. As antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved the quality of life for people living with HIV (PLWH), aging-related risk factors and comorbidities, including periodontitis, have emerged. This study aims to assess alveolar bone height, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) cytokines, and periodontal disease activity in men with and without HIV. METHODS: Ninety-three men (50 HIV+, 43 HIV-) aged 35-7

Simultaneous Liver and Kidney Transplantation in a Patient With Telomere Biology Disorder: A Case Study.

Organ transplantation is the primary therapy for organ failure caused by telomere biology disorder (TBD). We describe the first documented case of simultaneous liver and kidney transplantation (SLKTx) for TBD, although the diagnosis of TBD was reached only three months following SLKTx. The patient was born prematurely, displayed growth retardation, and developed chronic kidney and liver diseases. His pre-SLKTx autoimmune, metabolic, and viral assessments were negative, and persistent pancytopenia (bone marrow cellularity 70-80%) was attributed to renal disease-associated bone marrow changes. Metabolomics profile and machine learning prediction of treatment responses in immune thrombocytopenia: A prospective cohort study.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune disease characterized by antibody-mediated platelet destruction and impaired platelet production. The mechanisms underlying ITP and biomarkers predicting the response of drug treatments are elusive. We performed a metabolomic profiling of bone marrow biopsy samples collected from ITP patients admission in a prospective study of the National Longitudinal Cohort of Hematological Diseases. Machine learning algorithms were conducted to discover novel biomarkers to predict ITP patient treatment responses. From the bone marrow biopsies of 91 ITP patient
