OBJECTIVES: Occupational carbon disulfide (CS(2)) exposure has been associated with a variety of health effects since its introduction in the mid-19th century. Much of the epidemiological interest, especially since the 1960s, has focused on associations with cardiac effects. However, considerable differences in study approach, disease outcome, CS(2) exposure level, and control of confounding factors have produced mixed results and conclusions. A cohort of 88 patients with glottic cancer (13 Tis, 75 T1) who underwent endoscopic CO2 laser excision between January 1995 and June 1997 was prospectively studied. The mean follow-up was 43 months (range, 30 to 60 months). Changes of lipoprotein secretion and composition in response to CCl4 treatment were studied in monolayer cultures of rat primary hepatocytes. (1) CCl4 decreased secretion of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) by about 85%, while high density lipoprotein (HDL) secretion was less affected (about 40%). The aim of this work was to determine if the action mechanism of gadolinium on CCl(4)-induced liver damage is by preventing lipid peroxidation (that may be induced by Kupffer cells) and its effects on liver carbohydrate metabolism.
