The Anatomical Basis for Dystonia: The Motor Network Model.

BACKGROUND: The dystonias include a clinically and etiologically very diverse group of disorders. There are both degenerative and non-degenerative subtypes resulting from genetic or acquired causes. Traditionally, all dystonias have been viewed as disorders of the basal ganglia. However, there has been increasing appreciation for involvement of other brain regions including the cerebellum, thalamus, midbrain, and cortex. Much of the early evidence for these other brain regions has come from studies of animals, but multiple recent studies have been done with humans, in an effort to confirm or r

Cochlear Lymph Fluid Signal Increase in Patients with Otosclerosis after Intravenous Administration of Gadodiamide.

PURPOSE: Increased cochlear lymph fluid signals on three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR) images obtained several minutes after intravenous administration of a single dose of gadolinium-based contrast agent (IV-SD-GBCA) in a patient with severe retrofenestral type otosclerosis had been reported. This increase was thought to represent breakdown of the blood-labyrinthine barrier. The purpose of this study was to evaluate cochlear lymph signal on heavily T2-weighted 3D-FLAIR (HF) images obtained 4 hours after IV-SD-GBCA in patients with otosclerosis, Ménière's disease, a

Tumors of the superior medullary velum in infancy and childhood: report of 6 cases.

OBJECT: The superior medullary velum (SMV) is a thin lamina of white matter located between the superior cerebellar peduncles horizontally and between the midbrain and cerebellum vertically. The SMV has not previously been described as the primary location of a posterior fossa tumor, although it can be secondarily invaded by a tumor from the cerebellum or quadrigeminal plate. This paper aims to define clinical and radiological features of tumors primarily arising from the SMV during childhood. METHODS: The authors observed 6 infants and children harboring neoplasms of the SMV who were treated

Anatomical observations of the rat cerebellar nodulus after 24 hr of spaceflight.

Exposure to microgravity causes alterations in postural, locomotor and oculomotor functions. The vestibular abnormalities experienced by astronauts entail immediate reflex motor responses, including postural illusions, sensations of rotation, nystagmus, dizziness and vertigo, as well as space motion sickness. Adaptation to the microgravity environment usually occurs within one week, and a subsequent re-adaptation period of several months is often required upon return to Earth. Some astronauts experience recurrences of dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, as well as marked disturbances in postural

Course and targets of the calbindin D-28k subpopulation of primary vestibular afferents.

The subpopulation of primary vestibular afferents (PVA) displaying immunoreactivity for the calcium binding protein Calbindin D-28k (Calb) is constituted of particularly large bipolar neurons in the vestibular ganglion (VG) that innervate the central regions of the vestibular end organs exclusively via calyx endings on type I vestibular hair cells. These large-diameter PVA are characterized by irregular spontaneous discharge patterns and predominantly phasic firing properties with respect to natural vestibular stimulation. The present study describes the complete course and terminations of Cal

Automatic atlas-based volume estimation of human brain regions from MR images.

OBJECTIVE: MRI offers many opportunities for noninvasive in vivo measurement of structure-function relationships in the human brain. Although automated methods are now available for whole-brain measurements, an efficient and valid automatic method for volume estimation of subregions such as the frontal or temporal lobes is still needed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We adapted the Talairach atlas to the study of brain subregions. We supplemented the atlas with additional boxes to include the cerebellum. We assigned all the boxes to 1 of 12 regions of interest (ROIs) (frontal, parietal, temporal, and

Modelling the role of the cerebellar fastigial nuclei in producing accurate saccades: the importance of burst timing.

Clinical and experimental data indicate that damage to the cerebellar vermis results in permanent loss of saccadic accuracy. Models of saccade production therefore need to provide a role for the cerebellum. It has been proposed that the vermis adjusts the gain of the saccadic internal feedback loop in response to information about the amplitude of the intended saccade. A model of how the fastigial nuclei (through which vermal output is channelled) influence brainstem saccadic circuitry to achieve this effect was constructed in three stages. (1) The brainstem was represented by a version of Rob

Brain activity patterns in flying, echolocating bats (Pteronotus parnellii): assessment by high resolution autoradiographic imaging with [3H]2-deoxyglucose.

Brain activity patterns during echolocation and flight were assessed in mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii parnellii). Bats were injected intraperitoneally with [3H]2-deoxyglucose and restrained in a foam holder or allowed to fly for 20 min. Under resting conditions, low levels of [3H]2-deoxyglucose uptake were observed throughout the forebrain but relatively high uptake was found in brainstem auditory and vestibular centers. In flying, echolocating bats, marked increases in regional [3H]2-deoxyglucose uptake were apparent. All structures of the classical ascending auditory pathway were inte

[Automatic analysis by computer of the visual suppression test of pendular rotatory vestibular nystagmus].

This study presents an automatic computerized analysis of the visual suppression test of vestibular nystagmus. Visual suppression is measured during rotatory nystagmus examination. The amplitude variations and the frequency of the nystagmus are computed in the dark and in the light. This allows the computer to furnish with the help of an algorithm the percentage of nystagmus suppressed by ocular fixation. The results of the computerized analysis are compared to a qualitative evaluation. A percentage of 70% and more indicates a normal suppression reflex and corresponds qualitatively to a total

TUBA8 promotes neuronal dendrite development through its 40th alanine.

The functional specificity of tubulin isotypes has been demonstrated by various neurological diseases caused by an increasing number of mutations in tubulin isotypes. TUBA8 is specifically localized in cerebellar Purkinje cells, which exhibit the most elaborate dendritic trees in the central nervous system. However, the role and related molecular mechanism of TUBA8 in regulating neuronal dendritic morphology remain poorly understood. Here, we report that TUBA8 is required for neuronal dendrite development. As the most divergent member in α-tubulin isotypes, the expression of TUBA8 in Purkinje

Description of Encephalon Morphology of Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Perciformes: Cichlidae) From Brazil.

The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is a cichlid species native to Africa and is widely farmed in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, making it one of the most commercially important aquaculture species. Despite its significance, there is still a lack of detailed anatomical descriptions of its brain. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive anatomical and histological characterisation of the O. niloticus brain. Brain samples were collected from adult fish (n = 19) raised in a commercial aquaculture system in Brazil. The brain morphology of O. niloticus exhibits the gener

The prevalence of autism in cerebellar malformations: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The cerebellum contributes to the control of movement, language, and sociability. Purkinje cells, the main output neurons of the cerebellar cortex, are reduced in cerebellar malformations (CMs) and in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Thus, CMs may increase the risk for ASD. We conducted a meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of ASD in individuals with CMs. We searched PubMed, Embase, and APA PsycINFO for studies assessing ASD in patients with radiologically confirmed CMs. We evaluated risk of bias using Joanna Briggs Institute Checklists. Finally, we extracted data to calculate ASD prevale

Cerebellar activity is triggered by reach endpoint during learning of a complex locomotor task.

Locomotion in complex environments requires precise timing and control of paw movements to adapt steps and coordinate limbs. The cerebellum is thought to support moment-to-moment prediction and correction of these movements, but how its cortical neurons encode paw dynamics during locomotion requiring step-specific adjustments remains unclear. We developed LocoReach, a task in which mice walk on a runged treadmill, requiring each step to reach for the next rung. With training, mice improved performance, showing fewer missteps, longer strides, and faster swings. Optogenetic disruption of cerebel

Selective Chemogenetic Blockade of Cerebello-Rubral Pathway by Double-Virus Infection Method Using Lentivirus and Adeno-Associated Virus in Rats.

Double-virus infection method of lentivirus and adeno-associated virus was used to reveal the contribution of cerebellum in rehabilitative training after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in rats. Chemogenetic blockade of cerebello-rubral pathway was achieved by the injection of a lentiviral vector pseudotyped with fusion glycoprotein type E and carrying Cre recombinase into the red nucleus and an adeno-associated viral vector encoding hM4D(Gi)-mCherry in the double-floxed, inverted orientation into the cerebellar lateral nucleus. This silencing system induced by clozapine-N-oxide significantly r

Strategies to Decipher Neuron Identity from Extracellular Recordings in Behaving Nonhuman Primates.

Identification of the neuron type is critical when using extracellular recordings in awake, behaving animal subjects to understand computation in neural circuits. Yet, modern recording probes have limited power to resolve neuron identity. Here, we present a generalizable framework for assigning the neuron type from extracellular recordings in nonhuman primates. The framework uses a combination of logic, circuit architecture, laminar information, and functional discharge properties. We apply the framework to the well characterized architecture of the cerebellar circuit by using well validated s

Endovascular and surgical treatment of superior cerebellar artery aneurysms: a systematic review and meta-analysis of outcomes and complications.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Superior cerebellar artery (SCA) aneurysms are rare and technically challenging to treat. While both endovascular and microsurgical approaches can be effective, the optimal treatment strategy remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis compare the safety and efficacy of endovascular versus microsurgical treatment of SCA aneurysms. METHODS: A systematic search of EMBase, PubMed, and the Web of Science identified studies reporting outcomes of SCA aneurysms treated endovascularly or surgically. Primary outcomes included complication and mortality rates, a

Brain-wide mapping of developmental trajectories of cerebellar efferent projections.

Long-range cerebellar outputs are critical for shaping brain-wide functional architecture, influencing motor, cognitive, and affective domains. Proper cerebellar development and its efferent circuits are essential for brain maturation, and disruptions in these pathways have been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. However, despite the early developmental onset, the spatiotemporal dynamics of cerebellar connectivity remain largely unknown, limiting mechanistic understanding of cerebellar contributions to brain development and disease.
