Personality dimensions and substance misuse: relationships in adolescents, mothers and fathers.

The research addressed the question of whether relationships exist between personality dimensions, antisocial behavior, and alcohol or other substance misuse (AOSM) in adolescents and in their fathers and mothers, who often also have histories of AOSM. One hundred male adolescents (mean age 15.8 years) entering a residential treatment center for youths with AOSM, their mothers (n = 88, mean age 39.4 years), their fathers (n = 36, mean age 44.9 years), and community controls (n = 100 adolescents, mean age 16.5 years; n = 96 mothers, mean age 43.8 years; n = 87 fathers, mean age 45.9 years) were

Complex trauma among psychiatrically impaired children: a cross-sectional, chart-review study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify subgroups of severely psychiatrically impaired children on the basis of the complexity of their histories of exposure to abuse and other potential traumatic stressors, and to examine the relationship of complex trauma histories to DSM-IV-TR psychiatric diagnoses. METHOD: In a sample of 397 consecutive inpatient child psychiatry admissions, cluster analysis was used to identify subgroups on the basis of measures of documented physical or sexual abuse, parental impairment (arrest, violence, and/or substance use), and disrupted attachment (ie, out-of-home placement). Data

Development and psychometric evaluation of an Arab version of the Family Peer Relationship Questionnaire.

Little is known about parent and peer relationships in immigrant adolescents due to a dearth of culturally sensitive measures. We adapted the Family Peer Relationship Questionnaire (FPRQ) for Arab immigrant mothers and their adolescents. Mothers and adolescents completed parallel versions of the Arab FPRQ and measures of child behavior problems, child social relations, and maternal depression. Data analyses included confirmatory factor analysis and concurrent validity. The proposed four-factor structure was replicated in both the mother and child forms. Scores from the Arab FPRQ subscales and

Illicit drug use among women with children in the United States: 2002-2003.

PURPOSE: Given research that shows youth exposed to maternal addiction have increased rates of cognitive, socioemotional, and behavioral problems, we examined the prevalence and correlates of past year illicit drug abuse or dependence among women with children younger than 18 years of age in the home to identify maternal risk factors. METHODS: Data were from the 2002 and 2003 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a nationally representative sample of the U.S. civilian population. The current analysis utilized a subsample of women (N=19,300) who reported having children younger than 18 years

Cognitive and behavioral trajectories in 22q11DS from childhood into adolescence: a prospective 6-year follow-up study.

Patients with 22q11DS are at risk of behavioral problems and cognitive impairment. Recent studies suggest a possible intellectual decline in 22q11DS children. To date it is unknown if cognitive development is related to the behavioral problems in 22q11DS. We studied 53 children with 22q11DS who underwent cognitive and behavioral assessments at 9.5 years (T1) and 15.3 years (T2). In about one third, IQ data obtained at 7.5 years (T0) were also available. Results showed that internalizing behaviors intensified while externalizing behaviors decreased. Simultaneously, in about a third a significan

Child adaptational development in contexts of interparental conflict over time.

This multi-method study sought to identify parameters of developmental change and stability of child reaction patterns to interparental conflict in the context of family relations in a sample of 223 6-year-old children and their parents followed over the course of one year. Consistent with the sensitization hypothesis, interparental withdrawal and hostility each consistently and uniquely predicted child distress reactions to conflict even after analytically controlling for parental warmth. Associations were found across multiple domains of child responding (i.e., overt negative affect, subject

Homeostasis, stress, trauma, and adaptation. A neurodevelopmental view of childhood trauma.

All experiences change the brain, but not all experiences affect the brain equally. Because the brain is developing and organizing at such an explosive rate in the first years of life, experiences during this period have more potential to influence the brain in positive and negative ways. Traumatic events disrupt homeostasis in multiple areas of the brain that are recruited to respond to the threat. Use-dependent internalization of elements of the traumatic experience can result in the persistence of fear-related neurophysiologic patterns affecting emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and social

Development of infants of drug dependent mothers.

Infants of mothers who used methadone, heroin, cocaine and other drugs during pregnancy were compared with a group of control infants over the first 30 mths of life. Results of repeated examinations with the Bayley Scales of Infant Development showed a difference between the groups in mental development. No differences were found in a non-verbal version of the mental scale, but infants of drug dependent mothers seem to have specific difficulties in early language development. In psychomotor development, in behaviour during testing and on a questionnaire on activity, infants of drug dependent m

The Behavior Problems Inventory-Short Form for individuals with intellectual disabilities: part I: development and provisional clinical reference data.

BACKGROUND: The Behavior Problems Inventory-01 (BPI-01) is an informant-based behaviour rating instrument that was designed to assess maladaptive behaviours in individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID). Its items fall into one of three sub-scales: Self-injurious Behavior (14 items), Stereotyped Behavior (24 items), and Aggressive/Destructive Behavior (11 items). Each item is rated on a frequency scale (0 = never to 4 = hourly), and a severity scale (0 = no problem to 3 = severe problem). The BPI-01 has been successfully used in several studies and has shown acceptable to very good psycho

ADHD with comorbid oppositional defiant disorder or conduct disorder: discrete or nondistinct disruptive behavior disorders?

OBJECTIVE: In children with ADHD who have comorbid disruptive behavior diagnoses distinctions between oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) remain unclear. The authors investigate differences between ODD and CD in a large clinical sample of children with ADHD. METHOD: Consecutively referred and systematically assessed male children and adolescents with either ADHD (n = 65), ADHD with ODD (n = 85), or ADHD with CD (n = 50) were compared using structured diagnostic interviews and parent, teacher, and clinician rating scales. RESULTS: In children with ADHD, significant d

Paternal Depression at Kindergarten Entry and Teacher-Reported Behavior at Age 9 Years.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated associations between paternal depression when children were age 5 years and teacher-reported behavioral problems at age 9 years. METHODS: 1,422 children in a U.S. cohort study of mostly nonmarital births were studied. Data collection, which is ongoing, began in 1998-2000. Behavioral outcomes were measured in 2009-2010, when the children transitioned to middle school. Analysis was conducted in 2023-2024. Negative binomial regression models of associations between paternal depression and children's behavior and social skill scores and logistic regression mo

Friendship in Autism Spectrum Disorder Is Related to Diverse Developmental Changes Between Toddlerhood and Adolescence.

PURPOSE: Follow-up studies of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in early childhood that focus on friendship formation during adolescence are scarce. The present study focused on exploring characteristics possibly related to the ability to establish friendships during adolescence among children diagnosed with ASD in toddlerhood. METHODS: The cohort included 43 participants who underwent comprehensive assessments during toddlerhood and adolescence. Participants were divided into two groups [Friendship(+)/Friendship(-)] based on (1) adolescent social insight as assessed by p

Applying behaviour change theory to parent-led language interventions for children in the early years.

BACKGROUND: The aim of many interventions used by speech and language therapists (SLTs) is to change behaviours related to communication and interaction. Parent-led language interventions for children in the early years (0-5 years) rely on SLTs supporting parents to change their behaviour in child-focused interactions to effect a change in the child's communication. Therapeutic techniques used by SLTs in parent-led language interventions are largely underspecified, impacting on intervention reporting, replication, trialling and development. The Behaviour Change Technique Taxonomy Version 1 (BC

Behavioral and Emotional Difficulties after Pediatric Concussion.

Pediatric concussion is a major public health concern. Despite the prevalence of behavior problems following concussion and their potential role in prolonged symptoms, little is known about how child and adolescent behavior may impact post-concussion recovery. We sought to examine change in behavioral and emotional functioning in a sample of children ages 5 to <18 years with concussion. This study reports on data collected as part of a larger single-site prospective longitudinal cohort study. Participants were recruited from the Emergency Department (ED) of a tertiary children's hospital and c

Associations among child abuse, mental health, and epigenetic modifications in the proopiomelanocortin gene (POMC): A study with children in Tanzania.

Child abuse is associated with a number of emotional and behavioral problems. Nevertheless, it has been argued that these adverse consequences may not hold for societies in which many of the specific acts of abuse are culturally normed. Epigenetic modifications in the genes of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis may provide a potential mechanism translating abuse into altered gene expression, which subsequently results in behavioral changes. Our investigation took place in Tanzania, a society in which many forms of abuse are commonly employed as disciplinary methods. We included 35 childre

Understanding goals and intentions in low-functioning autism.

We investigated ability to understand goals and attribute intentions in the context of two imitation studies in low-functioning, nonverbal children with autism (L-F CWA), a population that is rarely targeted by research in the domain. Down syndrome children (DSC) and typically developing children (TDC) were recruited to form matched comparison groups. In the two sets of simple action demonstrations only contextual indicators of the model's intentions were manipulated. In the Head touch experiment the model activated a button on a toy by pushing it with the forehead, whereas in the Hidden box e

Behavioral aspects of Angelman syndrome: a case control study.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by impairments in intellectual, neurological and motor functioning and a postulated behavioral profile. This study compared behavioral characteristics of 62 individuals with genetically confirmed AS and 29 individuals with presumed AS from clinical features, with a control group of young persons with intellectual disability (ID) derived from an Australian epidemiological register. Twelve behavioral items from the developmental behavior checklist (DBC) were used for this comparison. The groups were matched for chronological age,

Childhood behavior disorders and injuries among children and youth: a population-based study.

CONTEXT: While an association between pediatric behavioral disorders and injuries is generally acknowledged, no studies have measured the risk for injury in the context of a large, population-based study that is free of cohort biases. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between childhood behavior disorders ([CBDs] as indicated by prescription for methylphenidate [MPH]) and a variety of injury outcomes, and to evaluate the risk for injury among these children after controlling for known demographic correlates. DESIGN: Population-based database analysis of all children in British Columbia (
