Beyond lung cancer screening, an opportunity for early detection of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiovascular diseases.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer screening programs concern smokers at risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The LUMASCAN (LUng Cancer Screening, MArkers and low-dose computed tomography SCANner) study aimed to evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of screening for these 3 diseases in a community population with centralized organization and to determine low-dose computed tomography (CT) markers associated with each disease. METHODS: This cohort enrolled participants meeting National Comprehensive Cancer Network criteria (v1.2014) in an organized

Causes of Chronic Kidney Disease and Their Associations with Cardiovascular Risk and Disease in a Sub-Saharan Low-Income Population.

INTRODUCTION: The causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in people living in Sub-Saharan Africa await identification. Also, whether cardiovascular risk and disease extent differ among patients with different CKD etiologies is uncertain. METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional study, we examined the presumed causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and their relationships with cardiovascular risk and disease in 743 consecutive patients from a sub-Saharan low-income population. RESULTS: Hypertensive nephropathy (HNP) (60.2%), diabetic nephropathy (DNP) (24.4%), HIV associated CKD (20.0%) an

Assessing the genetic relationship between gastroesophageal reflux disease and chronic respiratory diseases: a mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Previous observational studies have found an association between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic respiratory diseases, but it remains uncertain whether GERD causally influences these diseases. In this study, we aimed to estimate the causal associations between GERD and 5 chronic respiratory diseases. METHODS: 88 GERD-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified by the latest genome-wide association study were included as instrumental variables. Individual-level genetic summary data of participants were obtained from corresponding studies and the

Role of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)-Mineral and Bone Disorder (MBD) in the Pathogenesis of Cardiovascular Disease in CKD.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Multiple factors account for the increased incidence of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in patients with CKD. Traditional risk factors for atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis, including age, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and smoking, are also risk factors for CKD. Non-traditional risk factors specific for CKD are also involved in CVD pathogenesis in patients with CKD. Recently, CKD-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) has emerged as a key player in CVD pathogenesis

Polygenic Liability to Alzheimer's Disease Is Associated with a Wide Range of Chronic Diseases: A Cohort Study of 312,305 Participants.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients rank among the highest levels of comorbidities compared to persons with other diseases. However, it is unclear whether the conditions are caused by shared pathophysiology due to the genetic pleiotropy for AD risk genes. OBJECTIVE: To figure out the genetic pleiotropy for AD risk genes in a wide range of diseases. METHODS: We estimated the polygenic risk score (PRS) for AD and tested the association between PRS and 16 ICD10 main chapters, 136 ICD10 level-1 chapters, and 377 diseases with cases more than 1,000 in 312,305 individuals without AD diag

Low serum alkaline phosphatase levels in patients with chronic liver diseases: Possible contributions to disease pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVES: A low serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level is an uncommon finding in patients with chronic liver disease (CLD). The prevalence of this finding and whether low ALP expression influences CLD remain to be determined. The objectives of this study were: (1) to document the prevalence of low serum ALP levels in adult CLD patients and (2) compare features of CLD in patients with low versus normal or elevated serum ALP levels. METHODS: An adult, outpatient liver disease database was searched for patients with low serum ALP levels (<40 IU/L). Hepatic inflammation, function, fibrosis and

Social support: a key variable for health promotion and chronic disease management in Hispanic patients with rheumatic diseases.

Chronic diseases, including rheumatic diseases, can cause immense physical and psychosocial burden for patients. Many Hispanics suffering with arthritis face activity limitations. Social support, or the functional content of relationships, may be important to consider when examining treatment and outcomes for Hispanic individuals. Participants were recruited from an urban community health center (CHC) as part of a larger health behavior study. A cross-sectional, descriptive, mixed methods analysis was conducted to explore the role of social support in the sample. Only Hispanic/Latino patients
