Vitamin D levels and perinatal anxiety in an anxiety-focused behavioral intervention program in Pakistan.

PURPOSE: This study investigates Vitamin D levels across the perinatal period and relationships with perinatal anxiety and immune markers in women in Pakistan. METHODS: We analyzed plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and cytokines and chemokines from 117 participants from the "Happy Mother-Healthy Baby" trial, which evaluated a non-specialist delivered cognitive behavioral therapy intervention for perinatal anxiety. Blood samples were collected at four timepoints: T1 (10-22 weeks), T2 (22-26 weeks), T3 (34-38 weeks), and T4 (six weeks postpartum). Participants were categorized into anxiety g

The efficacy of antenatal Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for antenatal and postnatal depression: A PRISMA based systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Considerable research has assessed the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for perinatal depression, however limited attention has been paid to its effectiveness when delivered during pregnancy. The primary aim of this review was to review evidence of the efficacy of CBT interventions delivered antenatally to treat symptoms of depression in women during the antenatal and postnatal periods. The review's secondary aim was to evaluate potential moderators of treatment outcome. METHODS: Electronic Databases; CINAHL, PsycINFO, Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science were s

Evaluating effectiveness and engagement strategies for asynchronous, messaging, trauma-focused therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder: Study design and methodology for a hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can be a chronic and debilitating condition with significant individual and societal costs. Despite the availability of effective, trauma-focused treatments like Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), access and sustained engagement remain limited due to logistical, financial, and stigma-related barriers. The current study utilized a hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized control trial (N = 300) to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and feasibility of CPT-Text, an asynchronous, therapist-delivered messaging version of CPT, compared to culturally infor

Clinical and cost-effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing for treatment and prevention of post-traumatic stress disorder in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The objective was to provide up-to-date clinical and cost-effectiveness evidence investigating eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for treatment or prevention of adult post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We conducted a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cost-effectiveness studies assessing PTSD symptoms in adults, published since the NICE 2018 guidelines. EMDR was compared with trauma-focused-cognitive behavioural therapy (TF-CBT), waitlist or usual care. Six databases were searched in September 2023. Risk of bias was assessed. Data synthesis inclu

Machine learned text topics improve drop-out risk prediction but not symptom prediction in online psychotherapies for depression and anxiety.

Objective: Internet-delivered cognitive behavior therapies (iCBT) are effective and scalable treatments for depression and anxiety. However, treatment adherence remains a major limitation that could be further understood by applying machine learning methods to during-treatment messages. We used machine learned topics to predict drop-out risk and symptom change in iCBT. Method: We applied topic modeling to naturalistic messages from 18,117 patients of nationwide iCBT programs for depression and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). We used elastic net regression for outcome predictions and cross-

A randomized controlled trial testing the effects of sequential psychotherapy in depression: Changing therapist, or both therapist and method?

BACKGROUND: This study examined the effectiveness of sequential psychotherapy strategies for adults with major depressive disorder who did not respond to an initial course of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or short-term psychodynamic supportive psychotherapy (SPSP). METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, conducted in specialized mental health care in the Netherlands, from 185 non-responders from an initial 16-session treatment phase, 163 were randomly assigned 1:1:1 to one of three conditions: continuing treatment with the same therapist, switching to a different therapist, or swi

Psychotic vulnerability in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: associations with clinical features and treatment outcome in two clinical samples.

Children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are at increased risk of psychotic disorders; however, the manifestations and clinical implications of psychotic vulnerability among youth with OCD remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we examined the prevalence and clinical correlates of psychotic vulnerability in youth with OCD across two independent samples. Using the Thought Problems Scale of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), we assessed 215 Scandinavian and 125 North American children and adolescents with OCD. Participants with and without psychotic vulnerabili

Digital Cognitive Behavioral Treatment for Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic and disabling condition. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a first-line treatment for GAD, access to this treatment is limited; digital CBT (DCBT) programs may have the potential to overcome barriers to effective treatment and expand therapist reach and impact. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of smartphone-delivered DCBT compared with an active psychoeducation control condition for the treatment of GAD. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This single-blind, parallel-group, decentralized randomized clinical trial

Mental health services in jail: Identifying and quantifying barriers to implementation.

Although jails are the largest provider of mental health care nationally, access to treatment in U.S. jails is limited. Limited empirical information on factors impacting the implementation of mental health services in jail may be contributing to low treatment rates. We documented potential barriers impacting the provision of a brief cognitive-behavioral group-based intervention for people with serious mental illness in jail, including the rates of participants' recruitment, as well as starting and completing the intervention; time required for each group from recruitment to completion; and th

Exploring the mediating role of active coping in reducing perceived stress among men with advanced prostate cancer: a randomized controlled trial of cognitive behavioral stress management.

Cognitive-behavioral stress management (CBSM), which integrates active coping strategies, has been shown to enhance psychological adaptation in cancer survivors, resulting in reduced emotional distress and better quality of life. However, research on the impact of active coping in advanced cancer survivorship remains underexplored. This study examined whether active coping mediated the effects of CBSM on perceived stress among men with advanced prostate cancer (APC). APC survivors (N = 189) who had received androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) were randomized to a 10-week CBSM or a health promot

How can we reduce psychological burden for patients of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and their family caregivers? - Insights from the participatory multi-method study "potentiALS".

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal motor neuron disease that severely impacts patients' physical and emotional well-being, while also imposing significant burdens on family caregivers. Despite the high psychosocial demands as part of the multidimensional burden, evidence for effective interventions remains limited. This study employed a participatory approach to assess the support needs of ALS patients and caregivers and to evaluate their preferences for psychosocial therapies to derive a therapeutic framework. METHODS: In this observational multi-method s

Autistic adults' experiences of cognitive-behavioural group therapy for social anxiety: Relational experiences of participation.

Autistic adults often report high levels of social anxiety and significant life impacts from this anxiety on well-being and functioning. Although cognitive-behavioural therapy in group settings has been adapted for autistic populations, there is a paucity of research exploring how autistic individuals experience CBT interventions. This qualitative study investigated autistic adults' experiences of a modified cognitive-behavioural therapy group programme for social anxiety. Twenty-seven autistic participants were recruited through clinical services and community outreach. Following the interven

Integrating Smoking Cessation Treatment Into Web-Based Usual Psychological Care for People With Common Mental Illness: Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial (ESCAPE Digital).

BACKGROUND: Stopping smoking can improve mental health, with effect sizes similar to antidepressant treatment. Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) provides evidence-based treatment for depression and anxiety, and digital interventions can support smoking cessation. However, combined digital smoking and mental health support is not currently available in UK health services. OBJECTIVE: This feasibility trial aimed to investigate the acceptability and feasibility of a digital tailored smoking cessation intervention delivered alongside usual iCBT, and test trial procedures. A review of selected psychotherapies for PTSD, their efficacy and treatment guidelines in adults.

AIM: Around 2.5% of Poles will develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during their lifetime. Recent events, i.e. the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, are the factors that will increase the number of people dealing with PTSD. Owing to that, this paper aims to review and familiarise readers with the available scientific evidence on psychotherapies of PTSD provided in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A review of meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials and a review of the most recent treatment guidelines concerning PTSD. RESULTS: The best available evidence points to high efficacy of c
