Echinococcal cysts of the liver: a retrospective analysis of clinico-radiological findings and different therapeutic modalities.

The clinico-radiological findings and management of 61 patients with proven hepatic echinococcal cysts (HEC) examined over the past 5 years were retrospectively analyzed. The sonography and computed tomography (CT) scan findings were studied before and after therapy. The indications, healing, and complications rates for each therapeutic modality were recorded. There is a predominance of HEC in adult females (female to male ratio, 1.77:1). The majority of patients complained of abdominal pain (39/61; 64.4%), and the majority of cysts were solitary (43/61; 70.5%), localized in the right lobe (47

Factors Associated With Treatment Response in Granuloma Annulare.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Granuloma annulare (GA) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis with limited effective treatments and inconsistent response rates across modalities. The Goeckerman protocol, consisting of coal tar, phototherapy, and topical corticosteroids (TCS), has demonstrated robust efficacy in other inflammatory dermatoses but has not been systematically evaluated in GA. This study aimed to characterize treatment outcomes across multiple therapeutic approaches, including the Goeckerman protocol, and to explore clinical factors associated with treatment response. METHODS: A retrospective

Microscopically controlled surgical excision combined with ultrapulse CO2 vaporization in the management of a patient with the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome is an autosomal dominant condition characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, skeletal abnormalities and sometimes mental retardation. The large number of tumors, which are often disfiguring, presents extreme difficulties in the treatment of these patients. Microscopically controlled excision, compared to other modalities (radiation therapy, photodynamic therapy, intralesional interferon alpha-2b) offers the highest cure rate. However, because of the large size and involvement of wide areas of the skin, this approach is sometimes impractical. The ultr

Evolution of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group clinical trials for head and neck cancer.

During the past 25 years, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) has played a major role in head and neck cancer clinical research. The major research themes for recent and currently active trials have been: (a) combined modality therapy, (b) altered fractionation radiotherapy, (c) hypoxic cell sensitizers, (d) organ preservation, (e) chemoprevention, and (f) clinical/laboratory correlations. For advanced operable disease, the RTOG showed improved local-regional control with postoperative radiotherapy as compared to preoperative radiotherapy for carcinoma of the supraglottic larynx and hy

[Electroconvulsive therapy in combination with psychotropic and non-psychotropic pharmacological treatments: Review of the literature and practical recommendations].

CONTEXT: Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment for treatment resistant mood disorders and catatonia. ECT also appears to be an effective treatment in combination with clozapine in the context of treatment resistant schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Although increasingly codified (guidelines on indications, contraindications, methods of implementation), the practice of ECT still lacks consensual protocols. The concomitant use of psychotropic and/or non-psychotropic medication is a common situation when ECT treatment is considered. To our knowledge, there is to date no

What happens when people discontinue taking medications? Lessons from COMBINE.

AIMS: We use intensive longitudinal data methods to illuminate processes affecting patients' drinking in relation to the discontinuation of medications within an alcohol treatment study. Although previous work has focused on broad measures of medication adherence, we focus on dynamic changes in drinking both before and after patients discontinue. DESIGN: We conducted secondary data analyses using the COMBINE (Combined Pharmacotherapies and Behavioral Interventions for Alcohol Dependence) study, focused on participants who discontinued medications prior to the planned end of treatment. Failed therapy and directions for the future in dyspepsia.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders including functional dyspepsia are highly prevalent. Their clinical course is benign without disease-associated mortality. On the other hand, the impact can be substantial for the affected patients with regard to the decrease of quality of life, and for society with regard to the economical implications. Functional dyspepsia is a clinical syndrome with various underlying pathophysiologies. Thus, it is understandable that there is no single cure available. Effects of High-Frequency rTMS Combined With Physical Exercise on Mood Disorders in Patients With Methamphetamine Use Disorder: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders are a severe symptom in patients with methamphetamine (MA) use disorder (MUD) during withdrawal and are closely associated with the risk of relapse. While both standalone repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and physical exercise (PE) have shown positive effects on regulating mood disorders, the potential synergistic benefits of their combined use remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects of high-frequency rTMS (10 Hz) combined with PE on mood disorders in patients with MUD and to identify the relevant factors associated with emotional

Opportunities and challenges of immunotherapy for patients with resectable and potentially resectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer.

The integration of immune checkpoint inhibitors has transformed the therapeutic landscape for patients with resectable and potentially resectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer, providing unprecedented opportunities for curative treatment. Several trials have investigated immune checkpoint inhibitors, either alone or in combination with chemotherapy or radiotherapy, as neoadjuvant and/or adjuvant approaches for resectable and potentially resectable stage III non-small cell lung cancer. This comprehensive review elaborates and deeply analyzes the evolving evidence from landmark clinical t

Noninvasive brain stimulation combined with evidence-based psychotherapy for psychiatric disorders: A meta-analysis of optimal implementation parameters.

Evidence-based psychotherapies are first-line treatments for psychiatric disorders, yet response rates remain suboptimal. Noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) may augment psychotherapy by modulating treatment-engaged circuits. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials comparing active NIBS plus evidence-based psychotherapy versus sham NIBS plus psychotherapy. We searched six databases through February 2025, screening 1017 records. Twenty-eight trials (31 treatment arms; 1506 participants) met inclusion criteria. Active NIBS combined with psychotherapy p

Dedifferentiated Chondrosarcoma: Current Advances and Future Perspectives.

Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma (DDCS) remains one of the most aggressive and therapeutically challenging primary bone malignancies. While surgery continues to represent the cornerstone of treatment for localized disease, outcomes remain poor due to high rates of local recurrence and metastatic progression. The role of adjuvant therapies remains less clear. Radiotherapy may be considered in selected patients with unresectable tumors, positive margins, or for symptom palliation, whereas conventional chemotherapy has demonstrated inconsistent and generally limited benefit despite the use of oste

The Long Road Back: An Integrative and Interdisciplinary Approach to Care After Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is frequently associated with significant neuropsychiatric sequelae. Recovery trajectories are highly variable; injury severity is only one influence. Other factors, including preexisting psychiatric or psychological factors and psychosocial contexts also influence recovery. In this clinical challenge, we present the case of a young woman with a history of psychiatric comorbidity who developed complex neuropsychiatric symptoms after sustaining a TBI following a motor vehicle accident. Her clinical presentation included posttraumatic headache, chronic pain, visual d

Comparative Efficacy and Safety of Fractional CO2 Laser and Gold Microneedling Radiofrequency for Atrophic Acne Scars: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Acne is a prevalent dermatological disorder that profoundly affects patients' quality of life, frequently resulting in both physical discomfort and psychological distress. Conventional treatments, including topical agents, oral medications, and chemical peels, are primarily designed to alleviate symptoms but may be insufficient in effectively addressing persistent acne scars. Recent innovations in therapeutic technologies, such as microneedling radiofrequency (RF) and fractional carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, have demonstrated significant potential in enhancing skin regeneration and i
