Economic evaluations of community health worker programs focussed on neglected tropical diseases in low- and middle-income countries (2015-2024): A scoping literature review.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of more than twenty diseases caused by parasitic, bacterial, and viral infections, affecting more than one billion individuals worldwide. Economic evidence can help guide the investment in Community Health Workers (CHWs) who can help expand access to preventive and curative NTD services in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A scoping review was conducted across ten databases and grey literature, covering studies published between August 2015 and July 2024. Search terms related to "Community Health Workers" and "Economic Evaluations"

Survival, trust, and compassion: persistent HIV prevention concerns faced by Black sexual and gender minority communities in the US South - a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Members of Black sexual and gender minority (BSGM) groups in the Southern US experience disparities across all pillars of the HIV prevention continuum. Social network strategy (SNS) is an intervention that trains people with reasons to test for HIV to reach out to peers to increase HIV testing and may improve uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). We conducted formative research to design an enhanced SNS to implement within partner services. METHODS: In 2022-2024, we conducted four focus groups among HIV public health services staff and 12 in-depth interviews with local health

Gut mycobiome alterations and network interactions with the bacteriome in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

The connection between the gut mycobiome and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD) is largely uncharted. In our study, we compared the gut fungal communities of 214 ACVD patients with those of 171 healthy controls using shotgun metagenomic sequencing and examined their interactions with gut bacterial communities and network key taxa. The gut mycobiome composition in ACVD patients is significantly different, showing a rise in opportunistic pathogens like Candida albicans, Exophiala spinifera, and Malassezia restricta, with Exophiala and Malassezia showing the most significant changes (W

Oxidative response of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings to quinolone antibiotics and its correlation with phyllosphere microbes and antibiotic resistance genes.

With the increasing use of veterinary antibiotics, quinolone antibiotics may enter farmland systems after livestock manure has been composted. However, the phytotoxicity mechanism of antibiotics in crops is still unclear. In this study, the oxidative responses of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings to three typical quinolone antibiotics and their underlying mechanisms were investigated. The bioconcentration factor values were 1.47, 0.55, and 0.23 in the levofloxacin, enrofloxacin and norfloxacin treatment, respectively. The inhibitory effects on rice seedlings were in the order of levofloxacin >

Longitudinal flux balance analyses of a patient with episodic colonic inflammation reveals microbiome metabolic dynamics.

We report the first use of constraint-based microbial community modeling on a single individual with episodic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, who has a well documented set of colonic inflammatory biomarkers, as well as metagenomically-sequenced fecal time series covering seven dates over 16 months. Between the first two time steps the individual was treated with both steroids and antibiotics. Our methodology enabled us to identify numerous time-correlated microbial species and metabolites. We found that the individual's dynamical microbial ecology in the disease state led to time-v

Research priorities for the primordial prevention of acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease by modifying the social determinants of health.

The social determinants of health (SDH), such as access to income, education, housing and healthcare, strongly shape the occurrence of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) at the household, community and national levels. The SDH are systemic factors that privilege some more than others and result in poverty and inequitable access to resources to support health and well-being. Primordial prevention is the modification of SDH to improve health and reduce the risk of disease acquisition and the subsequent progression to RHD. Modifying these determinants using primordial p

Introduction of a psychologically informed educational intervention for pre-licensure physical therapists in a classroom setting.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing need for physical therapists to address psychosocial aspects of musculoskeletal pain. Psychologically informed practice is one way to deliver this type of care through the integration of biopsychosocial interventions into patient management. An important component of psychologically informed practice is patient centered communication. However, there is little research on how to effectively implement patient centered communication into pre-licensure training for physical therapists. METHODS: Thirty Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students took part in an edu
