Infant twins' social interactions with caregivers and same-age siblings.

The study of twin behavior offers the opportunity to study differential patterns of social and communicative interactions in a context where the adult partner and same-age peer are equally familiar. We investigated the development of social engagement, communicative gestures, and imitation in 7- to 25-month-old twins. Twin dyads (N=20 pairs) participated in 10-min, semi-structured play sessions, with the mother seated in a chair completing paperwork for half the session, and on the floor with her children for the other half. Overall, twins engaged more with their mothers than with their siblin

Community reentry: perceptions of people with substance use problems returning home from New York City jails.

Each year about 100,000 people return to New York City communities from municipal jails. Although about four-fifths report drug or alcohol problems, few have received any formal drug treatment while in jail. Researchers and practitioners have identified a number of policies related to corrections, income, housing, and drug treatment that may be harmful to the successful reintegration of people leaving jail. In order to explore the challenges to successful community reentry, six focus groups and one in-depth interview were conducted with 37 men and women who had been released from jail or priso

Assessment of villagers' perceptions towards nutrition communication in rural Nepal.

This article examines the perceptions of villagers of Nepal towards effective modes of nutrition communication affecting their nutritional health. Based on the villagers' experience of the nutrition communication used in various vitamin A projects surveyed in three districts of Nepal, a majority of the villagers strongly believe that a nutrition project cannot be effective in achieving its goals unless the local villagers are consulted during the process (defined to include design, development, implementation, and evaluation). They also believed that, among other modes of communication, a grou

Skin cancer prevention and detection practices in a Michigan farm population following an educational intervention.

Farmers face an increased risk of skin cancer, presumed to be secondary to their increased occupational exposure to sunlight. This study examines skin cancer prevention and detection beliefs and practices among adult farmers in defined control and comparison farming communities in four contiguous counties of Michigan, before and after a community-based educational intervention. The educational intervention included mailing packets containing information on skin cancer risks and community sources for screening, disseminating articles in local newspapers on skin cancer prevention and control mea

Romantic Relationship Satisfaction and Sexual Communication Self-Efficacy Among Partnered Adolescent Sexual Minority Males.

Theoretical frameworks suggest that romantic relationship satisfaction may influence sexual communication self-efficacy, which involves the confidence to discuss personal sexual health goals and plays a key role in HIV prevention among partnered adolescent males who have sex with males (MSM). The current study examined romantic relationship satisfaction as a correlate of sexual communication self-efficacy in a sample of partnered adolescent MSM. Participants (n = 50) completed self-report measures including romantic relationship satisfaction and sexual communication self-efficacy. Domains of s

Remote Language Assessment in School-Age Children With Phelan-McDermid Syndrome and Genotype-Phenotype Correlation.

People with Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS) have reduced speech and language abilities, yet little research has profiled the communication abilities in this population. The purpose of this study was threefold: identifying the language and communication profiles of school-aged children with PMS, identifying genetic contributions to language and communication abilities, and determining the feasibility of remote data collection for research purposes. A speech language pathologist used standardized assessments and direct evaluations by video conferencing to evaluate language and communication abili

Pushing for Structural Reforms: Impacts of Racism and Xenophobia upon the Health of South Asian Communities in Ontario, Canada.

South Asian (SA) communities in Ontario, Canada experienced disproportionately higher rates of COVID-19 infection. Moreover, these communities also faced racism fueled by COVID-19-related misinformation and xenophobic sentiments that placed blame on them for virus transmission. The aim of this research was to understand, from the perspective of local SA communities, the causes behind higher incidences of COVID-19. SA adults (N = 25) participated in a focus group (N = 3) investigating experiences during the early stages of the pandemic. Data, interpreted through the lens of the Public Health Cr

Shaping Citizenship in the Classroom: Peer Influences on Moral Disengagement, Social Goals, and a Sense of Peer Community.

Despite the important role of peers in the social process of classroom citizenship, the peer influence related to moral disengagement, social goals, and a sense of peer community remain unclear. To this end, it was examined to what extent youth become similar to their friends in moral disengagement, social goals, and a sense of peer community. Participants were 283 South Korean third to sixth graders (Mage = 9.60 years, SD = 0.97; 51.6% girls) who completed an online survey for moral disengagement, social goals, the sense of peer community and friendship network across the beginning (Time 1) a

Impeded frontal-occipital communications during Go/Nogo tasks in humans owing to mental workload.

Human brains rely on oscillatory coupling mechanisms for regulating access to prefrontal cognitive resources, dynamically communicating between the frontal and remote cortex. We worry that communications across cortical regions will be impeded when humans in extreme space environments travel with mental load work, affecting the successful completion of missions. Here, we monitored crews of workers performing a Go/Nogo task in space travel, accompanied by acquisitions of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. These data demonstrated that when the target stimulus suddenly changed to the non-targe

Essential elements of a community empowerment approach to HIV prevention among female sex workers engaged in project Shikamana in Iringa, Tanzania.

Globally, female sex workers bear a disproportionate burden of HIV, with those in sub-Saharan Africa being among the most affected. Community empowerment approaches have proven successful at preventing HIV among this population. These approaches facilitate a process whereby sex workers take collective ownership over programmes to address the barriers they face in accessing their health and human rights. Limited applications of such approaches have been documented in Africa. We describe the community empowerment process among female sex workers in Iringa, Tanzania, in the context of a randomise

Exploring the contributions and suitability of relational and community-centered fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) prevention work in First Nation communities.

BACKGROUND: This study provides initial evidence of the contributions and suitability of relational, trauma-informed, and community-based approaches for programs aimed at the prevention of future alcohol-and drug-exposed births. Specifically, this study extends understanding of the experiences of mentors providing evidence-based 3-year home visitation services through the Parent-Child Assistance Program (PCAP) in rural and isolated First Nation communities in Alberta, Canada. METHODS: Using a participatory approach to this research project, we explored existing PCAP services to capture implem

A Multimodal Lifestyle and Mind-Body Intervention in Rural Primary Care: Implications for Metaflammation in an Appalachian Population.

BACKGROUND: Chronic metabolic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and mood disorders frequently cluster in under-resourced communities. Increasing evidence suggests these conditions may be influenced by persistent low-grade systemic inflammation (sometimes referred to as metaflammation), as well as cumulative physiologic stress and environmental constraints. Rural Appalachian populations experience a disproportionate burden of these conditions, often compounded by poverty, food deserts, limited healthcare access, and restricted availability of preventive services. OBJECTI

Assessing mpox knowledge and sexual behaviours within high-risk populations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: Historically, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has faced the greatest public health burden from mpox, including more than 70 000 probable cases from 1 January 2024 to 2 February 2025. However, there has been a relative paucity of investigation focused on mpox community engagement in DRC, including assessments of disease knowledge and risk perception. METHODS: Given the ongoing Clade I mpox public health emergency of international concern, and the linkage between sustained human-to-human transmission and dense sexual networks, we sought to investigate mpox knowledge and s

Determining reduced functional capacity in older adults using research-grade wearable accelerometers: a secondary analysis of the study of muscle, mobility, and aging.

BACKGROUND: Reduced functional capacity (FC) is associated with adverse surgical outcomes in older adults. Current FC assessments rely on questionnaires; however, it remains unclear whether accelerometer-measured daily activity provides a more accurate evaluation. Our primary aim was to identify accelerometer-based variables associated with reduced FC. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the Study of Muscle, Mobility and Aging (SOMMA) cohort. Participants were community-dwelling adults (non-surgical) aged ≥70 yr and recruited between the years 2019 to 2021 at the University of Pitts

Exploring the prevalence of gout among underrepresented low socioeconomic status type 2 diabetes populations.

BACKGROUND: Underserved and underrepresented populations often lack access to affordable, quality healthcare, educational resources, and nutritious foods, all of which contribute to increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes and gout. Type 2 Diabetes is a condition characterized by the denaturation of the insulin receptors, due to chronically high blood glucose levels, leading to impaired regulation of blood sugar. Gout is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting joints in the lower limbs, marked by elevated serum urate levels and the accumulation of uric acid crystals in synovial fluid, causing painfu
