The biomechanical and morphological characteristics of the ligamentum mucosum and its potential role in anterior knee pain.

BACKGROUND: The ligamentum mucosum is composed of dense regular connective tissue and traverses from the distal femur to the infrapatellar fat pad. While the gross and histologic morphology has been studied, there is currently no evidence concerning the biomechanical properties of the ligamentum mucosum and the potential of anterior knee pain. The purpose of this study was to determine the anatomical, mechanical and histological properties of the ligamentum mucosum. METHODS: Dissections were performed on cadaveric knee specimens (N = 18) and histological analysis (n = 6) was performed to defi

Comparative evaluation of surgical modalities for coverage of gingival recession: An Armed Forces Medical College perspective.

BACKGROUND: Esthetics represents an inseparable part of today's oral therapy, and several procedures have been proposed to preserve or enhance it. Gingival recessions may cause hypersensitivity, impaired esthetics and root caries. Keeping in mind patient's desire for improved esthetics and other related problems, every effort should be made to achieve complete root coverage. METHODS: Different types of modalities have been introduced to treat gingival recession including displaced flaps, free gingival graft, connective tissue graft, different type of barrier membranes and combination of diffe

Cell dedifferentiation and epithelial to mesenchymal transitions during intestinal regeneration in H. glaberrima.

BACKGROUND: Determining the type and source of cells involved in regenerative processes has been one of the most important goals of researchers in the field of regeneration biology. We have previously used several cellular markers to characterize the cells involved in the regeneration of the intestine in the sea cucumber Holothuria glaberrima. RESULTS: We have now obtained a monoclonal antibody that labels the mesothelium; the outer layer of the gut wall composed of peritoneocytes and myocytes. Using this antibody we studied the role of this tissue layer in the early stages of intestinal rege

Three-dimensional microanatomy of longitudinal lanceolate endings in rat vibrissae.

The longitudinal lanceolate endings are ubiquitous sensory terminals in the sinus and nonsinus hairs of mammals that form a palisade around the hair follicle. To analyze how the nerve endings detect hair movements, the present study re-examined their fine structure and relationships with surrounding connective tissue in rat vibrissae by using a combination of three methods: immunohistochemistry for S-100 protein, scanning electron microscopy of NaOH-macerated specimens, and transmission electron microscopy of serial sections. Observations showed the lanceolate endings to be represented by trip

Expression of fibrogenic cytokines in rat small intestine after fractionated irradiation.

The molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate the radiation-induced fibrotic response in the intestine are not known. In addition to increased amounts of connective tissue, inflammatory cell aggregates are often found, especially in conjunction with acute or chronic mucosal ulcerations. These inflammatory cells are a major source of cytokines that influence connective tissue metabolism. Hence, a possible link may exist between the cellular inflammatory response and fibrosis. This preclinical study examined the influence of fractionated irradiation on the expression of three inflammatory/

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis in man. Light- and electron-microscopic studies of 18 lung biopsies.

Light- and electron-microscopic changes produced by hypersensitivity pneumonitis were analyzed in open lung biopsies taken from 18 patients with chronic forms of the disease. The main changes observed were: alveolitis (both luminal and mural), granulomas, intraalveolar buds, and interstitial fibrosis. The cells infiltrating the alveolar walls were mainly lymphocytes. Occasionally these lymphocytes presented irregularities in the contours of the nuclear membranes and resembled Sézary cells. In one patient, a few lymphocytes were found that resembled "hand-mirror" cells. Intraalveolar macrophage

Vacuum-assisted closure of a tissue deficit of the submental area in a patient with a necrotizing soft tissue odontogenic infection.

Odontogenic infections can rarely progress to necrotizing soft tissue infections. Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) is a rare but fulminant infection that spreads along the fascial planes, including connective tissue, muscle, and subcutaneous fat, and is typified by necrosis of the skin and other adjacent tissues. This article aims to present the treatment of a patient with submental skin and soft tissue necrosis due to an odontogenic infection and the subsequent management of the tissue deficit with a vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) system. The patient presented with extensive skin necrosis

Use of hyaluronic acid binding protein for detection of hyaluronan in ligature-induced periodontitis tissue.

This study was designed to demonstrate, by use of biotin-labeled hyaluronic acid binding protein (HABP) and an avidin-enzyme system, the localization of hyaluronan (HA) in periodontal tissue of beagle dogs during experimentally induced periodontitis. Experimental periodontitis was induced in the dogs by ligation of the gingival sulcus. Experimental tissue was collected at 0, 3, 7 and 21 days after ligation. HA was revealed by strong staining in the intercellular space around epithelial cells and periodontal ligament, and by light staining in the gingival connective tissue. According to the pro

[Pathology of soft tissue sarcomas: 238 cases of the childhood tumor registry].

Until April 1981 malignant soft tissue sarcomas were registered from 238 patients. Rhabdomyosarcoma was the most common tumor (115/238 = 48.3%). The embryonal subtype was predominantly seen among the rhabdomyosarcomas (83/115 = 72.2%). Rhabdomyosarcomas were localized most frequently in the head and neck area (40/115 = 34.8%), followed by genitourinary system (15/115), pelvis soft tissue (12), abdomen (10) and extremities (10). Non-rhabdomyosarcomatous soft tissue sarcomas (123/238 = 51.7%) were synovial sarcomas (20 = 8.4%), fibrosarcomas including spindle cell sarcoma (17 = 7.4%), leiomyosar

Immunohistologic and morphometric analysis of cytotoxic T lymphocytes in gingivitis.

BACKGROUND: Gingivitis is an inflammatory phenomenon localized in gingival tissues and histologically characterized by an infiltration of several inflammatory cell populations. The purpose of this study was to characterize, localize, and quantify in situ inflammatory and cytotoxic T lymphocytes using immunolabeled gingival tissue sections in order to specify their implication during human gingivitis, since it is well known that such cells play an important role in the defense against bacterial elements. METHODS: Paraffin gingival tissue sections from 7 patients with gingivitis (G) and from 7

Optimization of Gelatin-Based Scaffolds for Soft Tissue Regeneration: In Vitro and In Vivo Performance.

In this study, promising compositions of cross-linked gelatin-based scaffolds were tested in vitro and in vivo. Our aim was to utilize a solid matrix that is suitable for medical applications, and to be regulated as a medical device as a soft tissue implant. Three different cross-linkers were used in vitro, and the optimal composition was chosen for in vivo testing. The surfaces of the scaffolds were observed with SEM, and, in the case of divinyl sulfone (DVS), small cracks appeared, and the structure was rigid. With the use of poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDE), the surface was fo

[Tumor-induced osteomalacia caused by a late-revealing phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor].

INTRODUCTION: Osteomalacia is associated with diffuse pain and multiple fractures and therefore, diagnosis and treatment of this condition are necessary. Clinicians should be aware of an uncommon mechanism of osteomalacia where hypophosphataemia is secondary to renal phosphaturia because of the production by a mesenchymal phosphaturic tumor of FGF-23. This tumor should be localized and removed to cure this tumor-induced osteomalacia. OBSERVATION: A 70-year-old female patient was admitted to explore diffuse pain caused by multiple fractures secondary to osteomalacia. Despite vitamin D suppleme
