INTRODUCTION: Parenchymal Neuro-Behçet's disease (p-NBD) usually presents with a characteristic lesion in the mesodiencephalic region. However, there is a lack of information regarding the axonal integrity of normal-appearing white matter in p-NBD. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is based on the properties of diffusivity and anisotropy that indicate the integrity of axons. The primary objective of the study was to compare p-NBD patients to healthy controls using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI-MRI).
METHODS: The study enrolled parenchymal p-NBD patients who maintained stable d

BACKGROUND: Changes in brain structural connections appear to be important in the pathophysiology of substance use disorders, but their role in behavioral addictions, such as gambling disorder (GD), is unclear. GD also offers a model to study addiction mechanisms without pharmacological confounding factors. Here, we used multimodal MRI data to examine the integrity of white matter connections in individuals with GD. We hypothesized that the affected areas would be in the fronto-striatal-thalamic circuit.
METHODS: Twenty individuals with GD (mean age: 64 years, GD duration: 15.7 years) and 40

RATIONALE: Neuronal intranuclear inclusion disease (NIID) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder with highly variable clinical manifestations, making diagnosis challenging. Recent advancements in genetic and pathological testing, such as the identification of GGC repeat expansions in the NOTCH2NLC gene, have improved diagnostic accuracy, but familial cases remain underreported.
PATIENT CONCERNS: This report details 3 cases of familial adult-onset NIID in 2 sisters and 1 brother. The older sister experienced episodic encephalopathy and autonomic dysfunction for over 40 years, while the younger s

Substance use disorders are characterized by inhibition deficits related to disrupted connectivity in white matter pathways, leading via interaction to difficulties in resisting substance use. By combining neuroimaging with smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA), we questioned how biomarkers moderate inhibition deficits to predict use. Thus, we aimed to assess white matter integrity interaction with everyday inhibition deficits and related resting-state network connectivity to identify multi-dimensional predictors of substance use. Thirty-eight patients treated for alcohol, can

BACKGROUND: GAA-FGF14 ataxia (SCA27B) is a recently reported late-onset ataxia caused by a GAA repeat expansion in intron 1 of the FGF14 gene. Initial studies revealed cerebellar atrophy in 74-97% of patients. A more detailed brain imaging characterization of GAA-FGF14 ataxia is now needed to provide supportive diagnostic features and earlier disease recognition.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the brain MRIs of 35 patients (median age at MRI 63 years; range 28-88 years) from Quebec (n=27), Nancy (n=3), Perth (n=3) and Bengaluru (n=2) to assess the presence of atrophy in vermi

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is an important cause of long-term disability in extremely preterm infants, with no current treatment. This study assessed the potential neuroprotective effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in an IVH model using immature rats. IVH was induced in 1-day-old (P1) Wistar rats by left periventricular injection of Clostridial collagenase. Some rats received CBD prenatally (10 mg/kg i.p. to the dam) and then 5 mg/kg i.p. 6, 30 and 54 h after IVH (IVH+CBD, n = 30). Other IVH rats received vehicle (IVH+VEH, n = 34) and vehicle-treated non-IVH rats served as controls (SH

Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex deficiency (PDCD) is a disorder of mitochondrial metabolism that is caused by pathogenic variants in multiple genes, including PDHA1. Typical neonatal brain imaging findings in PDCD have been described, with a focus on malformative features and chronic encephaloclastic changes. However, fetal brain MRI imaging in confirmed PDCD has not been comprehensively described. We sought to demonstrate the prenatal neurological and systemic manifestations of PDCD determined by comprehensive fetal imaging and genomic sequencing. All fetuses with a diagnosis of genetic PDCD w

PURPOSE: Interhypothalamic adhesions (IHAs) have been reported only in the pediatric population, with unknown prevalence and histological composition. We aim to demonstrate their prevalence, assess their persistence through longitudinal imaging, classify IHAs by anatomical distribution, explore their structure, and report associated pathologies.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on consecutive pediatric brain MRI studies obtained between January 2012, and December 2013. The presence of an IHA was only confirmed when observed on at least two planes. For each IHA, cross-sectional ar

Cerebral small vessel diseases (CSVD) are neurological disorders associated with microvessels, manifested pathologically as white matter (WM) changes and cortical microbleeds, with hypertension as a risk factor. Additionally, a high-fat diet (HFD) can affect peripheral vessel health. Our study explored how HFD affects cerebral small vessels in normotensive WKY, hypertensive SHR, and SHR/SP rats. The MRI results revealed that HFD specifically increased WM hyperintensity in SHR/SP rats. Pathologically, it increased WM pallor and vacuolation in SHR and SHR/SP rats. Levels of blood-brain barrier (

BACKGROUND: Isolated tumefactive demyelinating lesions (≥2 cm) may be difficult to distinguish from contrast-enhancing brain tumors, central nervous system infections, and (rarely) tissue dysgenesis, which may all occur with increased signal on T2-weighted images. Establishing an accurate diagnosis is essential for management, and we delineate our single-center experience.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of medical records, imaging, and biopsy specimens for patients under 18 years presenting with isolated tumefactive demyelination over a 10-year period.
RESULTS: Ten children (ei
